ABWA to meet on Feb. 12 The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Feb. 12 meeting at Al A Cart Catering in Canfield. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.

The menu for the evening includes stuffed baked pork chops, Swiss chicken, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, apple sauce, pickled beets, dessert, coffee and tea. The cost is $18 per person.

Mardi Gras Party to benefit Hospice of the Valley Hospice of the Valley will host their 17th annual Mardi Gras Party on Feb. 9 at Mr. Anthony’s, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. This event, which will take place every Tuesday in February at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Evening story time This once-a-month evening story time features stories, movement and early literacy education. The next event will take place on Feb. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. The evening story time is open to anyone, but geared toward preschool children and their families.

Kindergarten readiness stations Kindergarten readiness stations are in every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of February, the stations focus on cognitive skills. This includes the development of memory, symbolic thought, reasoning and problem-solving. These skills support learning in all subjects. Before kindergarten, children should be able to communicate about past events and anticipate what comes next during familiar routines and experiences. They should also be able to solve everyday problems based upon past experiences. Our kindergarten readiness stations offer fun activities to build these skills. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. Stop by any branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station and help your child build these important skills.

The Michael Kusalaba library hosted its weekly Read and Make event for 2-5 year-olds on Jan. 3.

Children’s librarian Rhonda Monroe hosted the event, which was penguin themed.

“We try to get the kids involved in the movement,” Monroe said. “So I read and sing and get them involved.”

During the event children kicked off with a song, then read three books matching the theme.

Monroe said the event changes from week to week, sometimes including more interactive story times.

“Ours is geared towards early literacy,” Monroe said. “This group particularly we try to prepare them with these skill before they start school.”

Each week children also participate in a craft before they leave.

“We try to have fun, and get everyone involved,” Monroe said.

Strategy board games at the library Do you like to play strategy board games? Come to the Austintown library on Feb. 2 at 3 p.m. to play games like “Ticket to Ride,” “Settlers of Catan” and “Carcassonne.” Play what’s there or bring your own to share. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults and teens.

Gotta Move story time This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday in February at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Officers and Board of Directors for the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MSVC-MOAA) were recently installed at a recent luncheon business meeting at the Consolidated Activities Center of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna. The new board was installed by COL Dick Calta, the outgoing President of the Ohio MOAA Council of Chapters. Joining the current Board for the first time were former CPT Ralph DeLucia, CDR David DiTallo and LTC Larry Scheetz. Janet Oglesby and LTC Roderick Hosler presented the membership with annual reports and summarized the activities and accomplishments of the Chapter for 2018.

The MSVC-MOAA received its second consecutive 5-Star Level of Excellence Award from the National Headquarters in Arlington, Va., which recognizes the best of more than 400 chapters in the country. Janet Oglesby was awarded the highest Achievement Award as editor of the chapter newsletter, as well as Bruce Bille for the chapter’s website.

The guest speaker for the luncheon was Harold Ryther, a local Real Estate Broker and Certified Property Manager.

Little Explorers Club discovers winter at Mill Creek Park

The Little Explorers Club, organized by Mill Creek Park, met on Jan. 10 at the Ford Nature Center.

Naturalist Marilyn Williams hosted the event, stating that it is the program that will take the place of the former Children’s Nature Hour.

“We are going to talk about the animals we can find under the snow, and over the snow, and what the animals so in winter,”

Williams said.

During the event, children ages 3-6 gathered at the park for a variety of activities.

Williams started the event with an introduction, and coloring, before reading “Over and Under the Snow” to the group gathered.

Children worked with an interactive board with photos of animals from the book answering questions about what they do during the winter season.

“The purpose of the club is

to get kids to go outside and explore nature, they are so curious and we just want to get them out there and get them curious about the outdoors,” Williams said.

Children also created a pine cone bird feeder craft that the group hung outside.

Williams also took children on an exploration through the Ford Nature Center to see animals in the habitat room, before going outside to look for animals and See EXPLORERS, Page 6

Mental health first aid for adults Mental Health First Aid Training is aimed at helping people whose profession frequently brings them into contact with individuals exhibiting problems related to mental illness, substance use, poverty or homelessness. The library is partnering with the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board and Alta Care Group, which will provide instructors. Participants in this two-part series will learn risk factors and warning signs, as well as strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. Each participant will also receive a First Aid book.

Session one will be on Feb. 9 at 9 a.m. and Session two will be on Feb. 23 at 9 a.m. at the Austintown library. Space is limited; call 330-744-8636, ext. 50066 to register for the series. The sessions are available to library staff, as well as people who have jobs in which they could encounter individuals needing this type of assistance. Children also attempted to hand-feed chickadees. Williams said that the program is a series that runs monthly. She explained that her hope was that by starting the program in the winter it will encourage community members to see the beauty in the season at Mill Creek Park.

The Austintown library hosted its Gotta Move story time on Jan. 3.

Children’s librarian Lindsay Cramer ran the event, geared towards 2-5 year-olds.

“The goal is to get out some of the energy children that age always has, while working on early literacy skills,” Cramer said.

Cramer said the event stimulates brain development by keeping children engaged in different types of movement.

The event also utilized rhymes and literature based music to help children gain early literacy understanding without even realizing it.

“We want them to have a lot of fun, but also still get those skills while they are young,” Cramer said.

She said that many people come week after week, but new children and their families are always welcome to attend.

Austintown library reworks preschool story time

The Austintown library hosted a Baby Brilliant preschool story time on Dec. 26.

Librarian Allison Graf said that the theme of the event is bears.

“We have a lot of good stories about bears and what bears do in the winter,” Graf said.

She explained that the goal of the program is to help children learn early literacy skills while having fun.

“It’s about getting them ready for kindergarten,” Graf said.

“They learn these skills and they don’t event know they are learning anything,” The program combines music and movement games, as well as reading, to help prepare children for the beginning of

school.

Children ages 4-5 were welcome to attend, accompanied by an adult.

She said that while the program has a strong following, the numbers have dropped off.

To help combat this and make the program more available to working parents, Graf said the library chose to do a story time once a month in the evening instead.

“We aren’t getting read of the program, but reworking it to make it available to more people,” Graf said.

The first of these evening story times will take place on Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m.

“We are really looking forward to having our usual attendants as well as new people at this event,” Graf said.

Happily Ever After Caitlin Rhoads | Timothy Norris new middletown

Caitlin Rhoads and Timothy Norris, both of Poland, were united in marriage Sept. 7 at Zion Lutheran Church in New Middletown. The Rev. Larry Klinker officiated for the 1:30 p.m. ceremony, and a reception took place that evening at Avion on the Water in Canfield.

Dave and Beth Rhoads of New Middletown are the parents of the bride.

The groom is the son of Tim and Laurie Norris of Poland.

Stacy Bensinger and Rachel Murphy, sisters of the bride, served as matrons of honor. Bridesmaids were Megan O’Neill, Jessica Yanchick, Lauren Baco and Jess Gibbs.

They wore coral dresses.

The flower girl was Cora Murphy, the bride’s niece.

T.J. Bobosky served as best man.

Groomsmen were Billy Bullen, Ryan Quimby, Kevin Bretz, Tanner Avnet and J.T. Lavender.

Gabriel Adam, the groom’s cousin, was the ring bearer.

Mr. Norris graduated from YSU with a bachelor’s degree in applied science and is a systems administrator for The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods in Boardman.

The couple spent their honeymoon in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and reside in Poland.

Megan Brindle and Michael Hadzigeorge, both of Boardman, were united in marriage Aug. 11 in Butler North Church at The Butler Institute of American Art. The ceremony was officiated by the bride’s cousin, Eric Brindle. An evening reception took place at St. Christine Parish Center.

Chuck Brindle and Denise Brindle, both of Boardman, are the parents of the bride.

The groom’s parents are Michael Hadzigeorge and Kim Hadzigeorge, both of Howland.

The bride wore a silver beaded lace gown accented with side cutouts and a sheer lace, deep V-back.

Alexa Colello was the maid of honor. Marisa James and Ashley Brindle, sister-in-law of the bride, served as matrons of honor. Bridesmaids were Emily Melewski, Cassandra Valentini and Alyssa Barone.

The attendants’ dresses were geranium-colored.

Maggie and Erin Brindle, nieces of the bride, were the flower girls.

The responsibilities of best man were performed by Shawn Sudol. Groomsmen were Kenneth Webber; Ryan

James; Brian Brindle, brother of the bride; and Charles Lamonge.

Justin James was the ring bearer.

Mrs. Hadzigeorge is a patient service specialist at NovaCare Rehabilitation in Austintown.

Mr. Hadzigeorge is an assistant manager for Phantom Fireworks in Austintown.

The couple honeymooned in Key West, Fla., and reside in Boardman.

Vegas celebrate 50th anniversary with family

Nicole Balog of Boardman and Garrett Bickerstaff of Austintown were married Aug. 11 during a 1:30 p.m. ceremony solemnized by Brenda Rider at St. James Meeting House in Boardman Park. A reception took place that evening at The Mahoning Country Club in Girard.

The parents of the bride are Andrew and Vickie Balog of Austintown.

Joy Bickerstaff and Michael Williams of Boardman are the groom’s parents.

The bride wore an ivory, strapless ballgown.

Alicia Balog, sister of the bride, was the maid of honor.

The bridesmaids, wearing wisteriacolored dresses, were Stephanie Budaker and Kelsey Harkabus.

Mike Lelesch held the responsibilities of best man. Groomsmen were Andrew Balog, brother of the bride; and Alec Harkabus.

Ushers were Daniel Rein and Daniel Ferguson.

A l b e r t a n d P a m e l a Ve g a o f Youngstown recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family.

The couple’s children are Vincent (Chris) Vega of Youngstown and David (Colleen) Vega of Austintown. Their three grandchildren complete the family.

Youngstown State University with a master’s degree in gerontology. She is a part-time faculty member at YSU. Mr. Bickerstaff graduated from YSU. He is an engraver at Things Remembered in North Jackson.

The couple honeymooned on a cruise to Mexico and reside in Austintown.

Mr. Vega married the former Pamela Wilkie on Dec. 13, 1968, in Youngstown.

Mrs. Vega was a homemaker and a member of the Meals on Wheels at Zion Lutheran Church.

Her husband was an employee of General Motors until he retired.

The couple also were members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
