Healthy eating program set for Feb. 5 Healthy Eating for You, a free program sponsored by Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley and led by a registered dietitian, will address portion size, reading and understanding nutrition labels, and learning to eat mindfully. Mardi Gras Party to benefit Hospice of the Valley Hospice of the Valley will host their 17th annual Mardi Gras Party on Feb. 9 at Mr. Anthony’s, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with champagne and hor d’ouvres. Featured at the event will be a silent auction, food, drinks, dancing to Ovation and DJ Bryan Ladd, a 50/50 raffle, psychic readings, Spin and Win presented by Komara Jewelers and more. ABWA to meet on Feb. 12 The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Feb. 12 meeting at Al A Cart Catering in Canfield. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes stuffed baked pork chops, Swiss chicken, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, apple sauce, pickled beets, dessert, coffee and tea.

Kindergarten readiness stations Kindergarten readiness stations are in every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of February, the stations focus on cognitive skills. This includes the development of memory, symbolic thought, reasoning and problem-solving. These skills support learning in all subjects. Before kindergarten, children should be able to communicate about past events and anticipate what comes next during familiar routines and experiences. They should also be able to solve everyday problems based upon past experiences. Our kindergarten readiness stations offer fun activities to build these skills. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. Stop by any branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station and help your child build these important skills.

Teenagers battle dragons at the Boardman library

Boardman’s Apprentice’s Inn Dungeons and Dragons play club met on Jan. 16.

Librarian Amy Burkard, who also runs the teen advisory board at the library, organized the event after a group of teenagers showed interest.

“I think it’s becoming more popular with shows like ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Stranger Things,’ so its popping up in pop culture,” Burkard said.

The group is comprised of seventh- through twelfth-graders who meet once a month at the Boardman library large meeting room.

Buckard said there are about 10-15 regular members who play, and that new members are always welcome.

“What’s really great is we have teen interest so the teens are actually the dungeon masters so if we have a lot of interest we have a few people who are confident enough to run multiple games,” Burkard said.

New members are able to come to the library at any time to start filling out their character sheet, or can just attend the next meeting and jump right in.

“We have played one campaign broken up into two parts, so we are on the second section of that first campaign we started a year ago,” Burkard said.

The group usually meets on the third Wednesday of every month, though that is subject to change.

Burkard said that the group meets starting at 6:30 p.m., where

they spend time setting up and leveling up before they game play begins at 6:45 p.m.

“We always have snacks, so everyone takes a minute and gets comfortable and gets some food before they really get into it,” Burkard said.

She said that the game usually goes until 8 p.m., but can go over if the teenagers are in the middle of a campaign.

“They were on boats last time, and so it’s boats and pirate zom-

bies,” Burkard said. “Understandably, it’s important to continue until they’re at a good place.”

Burkard said that this campaign will continue until May at least.

“I am really proud because this is teens and they get to help other teens and they are all over the area and a lot of them didn’t know each other before this,” Burkard said. “They got to know each other after a while and they all stuck around.”

Sixteenth annual FatherDaughter Princess Dance to take place over six nights

Students in the aviation maintenance program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center have a new set of wings to work on this school year thanks to a museum in Tennessee. The A23 Fixed Wing Single Engine airplane was donated by the Beechcraft Heritage Museum in Tullahoma, Tenn. to be used as a training tool for the students enrolled in the program at MCCTC, and are working towards their Airframe and Powerplant Certificate. The single engine airplane was delivered last month and students will have the chance to get hands-on with it soon. The aviation program at MCCTC is a twoyear program where students have the opportunity to receive their Airframe and Powerplant Certificate after completing the program. MCCTC is the only high school that offers this program in the state of Ohio east of Columbus and is a savings of $30,000 to the student.

This event, which will take place every Tuesday in February at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Reading tutors Trained members from Ohio Reading Corps are available for free reading tutoring for students in kindergarten to third grade. Drop in at the Boardman library every Wednesday in February from 4-6 p.m. for one-on-one or small group reading tutoring sessions. Registration is not required.

Officers and Board of Directors for the Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MSVC-MOAA) were recently installed at a recent luncheon business meeting at the Consolidated Activities Center of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna. The new board was installed by COL Dick Calta, the outgoing President of the Ohio MOAA Council of Chapters. Joining the current Board for the first time were former CPT Ralph DeLucia, CDR David DiTallo and LTC Larry Scheetz. Janet Oglesby and LTC Roderick Hosler presented the membership with annual reports and summarized the activities and accomplishments of the Chapter for 2018. Boardman bands perform winter concert

Boardman Glenwood Junior High and Center Intermediate School students performed their winter concerts Jan. 9 and 10 at the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center.

BCIS Band Director Timothy Tuite said this is the first performance for fifth-grade band members.

“Our students have been preparing for this performance since September,” Tuite said.

“At the beginning of the year, a lot of time is spent on fundamentals of music, and developing skill on their respective instruments.”

Fifth-graders at BCIS performed on Jan. 9 along with BGJHS seventh-grade students, directed by Michael Shevock.

On Jan. 10, sixth- and eighthgraders performed for the community.

Shevock said that the reason behind splitting the concerts into two days like this is because one night can not encompass all four bands while effectively showcasing the hard work students put in.

“We decided to give parents a taste of varied ability level,” Shevock said.

Tuite said that students at the intermediate level practiced with the band three days a week in preparation for the concert.

“It is a scheduled class in their day,” Tuite said. “Because the high school director is available to come to the intermediate school, we can frequently split the band into smaller groups of like instruments to increase one on one instruction time.”

The seventh- and eighthgrade bands meet every day, according to Shevock.

“We started preparing our music for this performance on the second week of school,” Shevock said.

During the concert, each grade was instructed by their director, and performed a number of songs at their current skill level.

“Band is obviously a class in school that is about learning to play, perform, and enjoy music.

It is also a class about setting goals, incremental improvement over the long haul, and accepting individual responsibility so that you can be a valuable member of a team,” Tuite said.

The Boardman band program has been a part of students’ lives for 92 years, Tuite said, and this year’s fifth-graders will com-

pose the 100th Boardman band when they reach their senior year of high school.

“While the formats of the concerts have changed over the years, there has been - to the best of my knowledge - some form of winter concert over all of those years,” Tuite said.

The concert series was moved recently from December to January, according to Shevock, because of the amount of activities during the month.

“Students met and exceeded all expectations with this concert,” Shevock said. “We are grateful for administration, the parents and anyone who is an advocate of the arts and music in the Boardman Schools.”

Coffee bar offers students lifelong skills

G lenw o o d Ju n ior H ig h School opened a coffee bar run by students. The coffee bar will be open every Friday at the school.

Nancy Zitzew, a Boardman teacher, said that the coffee bar is a self-sufficient operation that benefits students in a multitude of ways.

“The students have a sense of purpose, they are always so excited to come,” Zitzew said.

In September, Zitzew said she was brought the idea by teacher Elissa Wooten.

Wooten and Zitzew then brought the idea to school officials, gaining support before presenting the idea to the board.

Mark Zura, Director of Student Services, said that it is an extension of the work study program at Boardman High School.

“The high school has a rich history of having work study programs for students with special needs so this was a natural funnel for starting that transition earlier,” Zura said.

He explained that Glenwood previously had a work study program, and that starting it back up was great for students.

“It’s really just a nice sense of community for our students who have special needs to take the opportunity to reach out to the staff,” Zura said.

Zitzew said that the students involved cycle through a schedule that allows them to do each job.

Students are responsible for taking orders, working the cash register, punching punch cards and passing out drinks.

“When they go out into the real world and get jobs they will all have those skills,” Zitzew said.

Students learn money management, communication skills and how to work cash registers, which Zura said they can use later in life.

“One of the things the kids ask us is would we be able to use this as a reference when we go out into the real world, and I said absolutely, it gives them a step ahead of other people be-

cause when you are 16 not a lot of kids go out into the work force and get those job skills,” Zitzew said.

Along with job skills, the money raised through the coffee bar directly benefits the students.

Teacher Joyce Schmid explained that not only does the money go to maintaining the coffee bar, but it goes to taking students on field trips.

“We used to go on a lot of trips but that money went away,” Schmid said. “So this is a great way to make sure parents don’t have to constantly pay for trips we want to take.”

“We want to do some really cool things that relate back to our content that we wouldn’t be able to do because its so expensive,” she said.

Student La’Naesha Stonebrook said that she loves working at the coffee bar every Friday.

“It’s great I love coming here, we get to talk to people and I

meet someone new every week,” Stonebrook said.

She said that every Friday she hopes to be on the next week’s schedule, and doesn’t mind volunteering to come in early.

“We learn a lot of skills, get to talk to people, I learn a lot,” Stonebrook said.

Eight students work at the coffee bar, with five working on one Friday, giving some students a week off.

“I think it’s really important for Boardman,” Zura said. “We are really blessed to have great families, great students here.”

Boardman junior varsity girls fall to Austintown The Boardman High School junior varsity girls basketball team fell at crosstown rival Austintown Fitch by the score of 47-35 on Jan. 16. The game was back and forth until the fourth quarter. Fitch used a buzzer beater at the end of the third to go up 33-31 and went on a 10-0 run to start the forth quarter to put the game away.

Varsity girls lose to Fitch The Boardman High School girls varsity basketball team lost their first AAC contest of the season to Austintown Fitch High School 54-42, and dropped to 10-4 on the year. The Spartans jumped out of the gate quickly to take a 13-7 lead heading into the second quarter, but allowed the Falcons to take a 27-19 lead into the half. Boardman would outscore Fitch 14-12 in the third quarter to cut the lead to six heading to the fourth. Swimmers use BTUB groups to help community The Spartan sw im and dive team at Boardman High School was busier than ever during their winter break.

“This is the time of year when we can get some extra work in, so we do two practices a day—one in the weight room and one at the pool.

They are tired, maybe even miserable, but they know this is our final push prior to our championship and tournament competitions,” said Coach Carlo Cordon.

The team also used their little extra time to help with community needs.

BTUB (Boardman Team

Unity Building) is a team building tradition for the Spartans.

It pairs seniors with a group of underclassmen, and they focus on community projects together. Senior swimmers organize, plan and participate in the service projects. This year, they included donations to the Salvation Army, helping out at Angels for Animals and working a community lunch at St. Johns Episcopalian Church in Youngstown.

“BTUB is a way to put the team ‘unity’ into community,” said Cordon. “We are really proud of how hard our kids work-in and out of the water.”

POLICE REPORTS Jan. 9 Arrests: After responding to a fight in the 800 block of Cook Avenue and a possibly armed person, officers took into custody Tre’von E. Galbreath, 23, who listed Youngstown addresses on Sherwood Avenue and Emery Street, as well as Adam A. Perkins, 24, of Logan Arms Drive, Liberty. Galbreath and Perkins were wanted on a warrant charging improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and a probation-violation charge, respectively.

Aggravated menacing: A township woman told officers her two daughters who attend West Boulevard Elementary School were threatened by another student as the girls prepared to board a school bus.

Attempted burglary: Someone apparently tried to break into a residence in the 500 block of Oakridge Drive before the homeowner noticed a broken basement window.

Identity fraud: A Summersville, S.C., woman found out someone without authorization had placed a $137 charge on her credit card while at a Doral Drive grocery store.

Harassment: A manager with IHOP, 833 Boardman-Poland Road, reported a man made 19 such calls to the business.

Theft: A man in his mid-20s reportedly stole about $250 worth of clothing from Marshalls, 1134 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: An official with a Marwood Circle business discovered the theft of a $244 electronic communications device that belonged to a former client.

Identity fraud: A West Boulevard woman found out someone without permission had opened a credit-card account in her name.

Theft: Erica E. Provitt, 30, of Williamson Avenue, and Annette L. Alexander, 43, of Clearmount Avenue, faced theft charges. The two Youngstown women were accused of stealing $105 worth of T-shirts and other merchandise from Burlington Coats, 529 BoardmanCanfield Road.

Weapon: Authorities in the 800 block of Boardman-Canfield Road arrested Michelle R. Wolfe, 44, of Euclid Boulevard, Boardman, on a felony charge of carrying a concealed weapon. Wolfe, who also was wanted on a telecommunicationsharassment warrant, had in her purse a loaded handgun with five rounds, a report stated.

Jan. 10 Arrest: Authorities charged Todd J. Moffie, 42, of Mathews Road, Boardman, with obstructing official business, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct while intoxicated after an officer sitting in his cruiser near South Avenue reported an intoxicated Moffie walked up and began a verbal confrontation in which he admitted being drunk, then a short time later ignored officers’ commands and struggled with them as they tried to arrest him.

Theft: Police at Boardman Area Court on Market Street took custody of Christopher M. Gause, 29, who faced a theft charge. Gause, of Seventh Street, Struthers, was accused of stealing a shirt and a pair of jeans last month from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road.

Attempted theft: A Brookwood Road woman realized her vehicle had been ransacked while parked in a carport.

Felonious assault: After answering a fight call in the 4800 block of Southern Boulevard, police filed felonious-assault and criminal-damaging charges against David L. Gagliardi, 34, of Southern Boulevard, Boardman, after a friend alleged Gagliardi struck him over the head with an acoustic guitar, breaking the instrument in half, then punched his face several times after Gagliardi reportedly

became angered when the accuser asked him to no longer stay at the residence.

The victim suffered several injuries that included a broken tooth, a report showed.

Trespassing: An official with Kohl’s told officers a woman who had been accused of shoplifting continually comes into the department store in violation of a trespassing warning.

Unauthorized use of a vehicle: A Youngstown man said a female acquaintance borrowed but has failed to return his 2012 Chevrolet Malibu, which was last seen in the 800 block of BoardmanPoland Road.

Arrest: Charles P. Emerson was taken into custody at his Sciota Avenue home after police discovered the 32-year-old Boardman man was wanted on a Campbell warrant charging him with violating a court order.

Jan. 11 Arrest: Police and U.S. marshals arrested Mike J. Fiscus, 63, at his Shirley Road residence on a felony count of violating a protection order, related to an incident last month in which his former girlfriend, of Friendship Avenue, alleged the Youngstown man called her at the accuser’s place of employment, in violation of an order she had sought against him.

Auto theft: A 2017 Nissan Sentra was stolen in the 900 block of Cook Avenue.

Domestic violence: Stephanie M. Fox, 33, of Burkey Road, Austintown, was charged with the crime after police received information about a possible fight between a man and a woman near his Sciota Avenue residence. The man alleged that during an argument in a vehicle about their relationship, Fox punched him several times, leaving cuts to the victim’s temple area and lower lip.

Theft: Raymond W. McDowell II, 66, of Charles Street, Struthers, was charged in the theft of two large packages of beef snacks and a bottle of vodka from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Jan. 12 Drugs: Police received information about a man passed out in a car in the 1300 block of Doral Drive, where they charged Matthew B. Tinney, 29, of Edgewater Drive, Poland, with possessing drug-abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia. Tinney had a hypodermic needle, as well as a suspected used crack-cocaine pipe in a cigarette pack, a report showed.

Theft: Police charged Kristopher L. Anderson, 21, after alleging Anderson, of Grover Drive, Boardman, purposely neglected to self-scan a $12 bottle of wine and a set of headphones while in Walmart.

Criminal mischief: Someone poured a bottle of cooking oil on sidewalk in front of a business in the 6100 block of Market Street.

Theft: Officers received a complaint that guests were smoking in a nonsmoking room at a South Avenue motel before they took Caseem L. Jackson, 19, into custody on a theft warrant. Jackson, of Emery Avenue, Youngstown, was accused of stealing about $50 worth of property Nov. 4, 2018, from Walmart.

Theft: Christopher J. Melvin, 28, faced a charge after authorities alleged that while at a self-scanner in Walmart, the Ambridge, Pa., man stole $28 worth of food by intentionally placing the bar codes of lower-priced items over those of higher-priced ones.

Arrest: While dealing with a disturbance between a man and a woman on Willow Drive, authorities charged Cindy J. Campbell of Willow, Boardman, with disorderly conduct while intoxicated

and resisting arrest after alleging an intoxicated Campbell, 52, launched into a tirade aimed at the other person, then tried to slam her apartment door on officers before struggling with them.

Theft: Mister Jackson, 32, of Drummond Avenue, Youngstown, was charged in the theft of two prepaid cellphones valued at $258 from Walmart.

Theft/criminal damaging: A Bernville, Pa., man reported a driver’s-side window to his mother’s vehicle had been broken, and that $460 was missing while the car was in the 4000 block of Windsor Road.

Theft: Officers apprehended Ryan A. Tumlin, 18, in the 7300 block of California Avenue after alleging Tumlin, of South Avenue, Boardman, fled on foot after having stolen a $50 iPhone charger from the JCPenney store in the nearby Southern Park Mall.

Theft: A Wolosyn Circle man said he gave a female acquaintance $10 to buy him food, but that she never returned.

Theft: Police were dispatched to Liberty Township to pick up Christopher J. Sayers, 34, of Neilson Avenue, Youngstown, who faced two felony-theft counts.

Earlier, Sayers had visited a man’s Prestwick Drive home before the homeowner realized his wallet was missing and the victim’s bank informed him that several small unauthorized charges had appeared on his debit-card account, a police report showed.

Jan. 13 Arrest: After stopping his car on Mill Creek Boulevard, police charged Efrain Negron of Hudson Drive, Youngstown, with operating a vehicle impaired. Ne-

gron, 58, refused to submit to a breath test, and he had two OVI convictions, including one in 2016, a report indicated.

Citation: After responding to a report of an erratic driver near West Boulevard, authorities cited Jeanine A. Belfiore, 28, of South Maryland Avenue, Youngstown, after alleging she had a small suspected marijuana cigarette in her vehicle.

Theft: A $500 electronic device was removed from a car in the 800 block of Moyer Avenue.

Domestic violence: A 16-year-old Boardman boy faced a charge after he and his father reportedly had struggled over a cellphone. The teen struck the victim several times, including once in the head, he alleged.

The teens then led officers on a foot chase, a report said.

Criminal mischief: A Mathews Road woman saw that a paint ball had been fired at her home, which did an estimated $200 in damage to a double-pane storm window.

Theft: A woman reportedly stole $309 worth of jackets and socks from T.J. Maxx & More, 717 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: While conducting a welfare check at a Riverside Drive home, officers arrested Danielle M. Johntony, 37, of Riverside, Boardman, on a theft warrant, related to a Dec. 19, 2018, shoplifting situation at Dollar General, 5953 South Ave., in which a $5 air freshener was taken.

Menacing: A manager with Bath & Body Works in Southern Park Mall alleged two female customers in their 30s threatened employees after items had evidently been stolen from the store.

Theft: Authorities were sent to downtown Youngstown to assume custody of Larry A. McHellon of West Chalmers Avenue, Youngstown, who was wanted on a theft warrant. McHellon, 32, was accused of stealing about $718 worth of merchandise, including a 50-inch TV, last month from Walmart.

Employee theft: A loss-prevention official with Burlington Coats alleged seeing a worker eating two snack items without having paid for them.

Theft: A man reportedly stole two coats and a $100 bag of additional merchandise from T.J. Maxx & More.

The groom is the son of Tim and Laurie Norris of Poland.

The parents of the bride are Andrew and Vickie Balog of Austintown.

Joy Bickerstaff and Michael Williams of Boardman are the groom’s parents.

The bride wore an ivory, strapless ballgown.

Alicia Balog, sister of the bride, was the maid of honor.

The bridesmaids, wearing wisteriacolored dresses, were Stephanie Budaker and Kelsey Harkabus.

Mike Lelesch held the responsibilities of best man. Groomsmen were Andrew Balog, brother of the bride; and Alec Harkabus.

Youngstown State University with a master’s degree in gerontology. She is a part-time faculty member at YSU. Mr. Bickerstaff graduated from YSU. He is an engraver at Things Remembered in North Jackson.

The couple honeymooned on a cruise to Mexico and reside in Austintown.

Mr. Vega married the former Pamela Wilkie on Dec. 13, 1968, in Youngstown.

Mrs. Vega was a homemaker and a member of the Meals on Wheels at Zion Lutheran Church.

Her husband was an employee of General Motors until he retired.

The couple also were members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
