She also talked about the fact that her father was the first black student at University of Jamestown in Fargo, N.D. The school created an award after her father, called the Talbert Chism Award. “W hen Mrs. Zorman asks me for anything I do it. I tell students ‘Oh we went to school together,’ because she was my teacher, which was awesome,” said Chism-Pinkard.

Some of the children worked on making bird feeders during the It’s For the Birds event at Ford Nature Center on Jan. 16.

Day with the birds at Ford Nature Center By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Ford Nature Center gathered different ingredients for their It’s For the Birds event on Jan. 16. Marilyn Williams, a naturalist at Ford Nature Center, led the class in making different kinds of bird feeders. The participants could make bird feeders using a pop bottle, a small log or a pinecone. Bird seed, peanut butter and paint was all supplied for guests to use to decorate their feeders. Many of the people who used the pop bottle painted the bottle to look like a snowman. A tin pan attached to the bottle underneath the bottle allowed bird seed to be placed in the pan. Each of the feeders had a ribbon at the top so the people attending could hang them up on a tree, bush or anything else

they wished. Children and adults both attended the event, making it into an opportunity for families to spend quality time with one another. Once everyone finished their bird feeders, they were able to take them home and put them outside for the birds to eat from. While some people worked on make bird feeders inside, there were others who enjoyed the scene outside. Some of the guests at Ford Nature Center stood outside with bird seed in their hands and waited for birds to come to them. The bird that people were on the lookout for was the Black-capped Chickadee. Whether it was spent inside or out, the birds were the center of attention for the morning at Ford Nature Center.

The children worked on making their own wolf masks. The eyes were cut out so the children could see through them when they participated in their outdoor activity pretending to be wolves.

The children and their caregivers watched and listened as Julie Bartolone and Hillary Lenton put on a skit during the Big Bad Wolf program at Ford Nature Center on Jan. 7.

WOLVES

Continued from Page 9

“The kids are going to learn the truth from the fable in stories,” said Bartolone. The skit was set up as an interview. Lenton, as Little Red Riding Hood, would ask Bartolone, t he wolf, questions about wolves. Bartolone would explain what is real about wolves versus what people read in stories. The skit was a fun way for children to learn rather than being told facts from a sheet of paper.

After the skit, the children worked on making their own wolf masks. They colored in a wolf face, cut out the shape and glued it to stick. This allowed the children to hold the mask up to their faces and pretend to be wolves before they went outside for their last activity. “We are going to take the kids outside and be a pack of wolves. Julie will be the alpha wolf and hunt as a pact. We hid stuffed animals on the trail,” said Lenton. When the children finished making their masks, they went

outside to pretend to be a pack of wolves. Stuffed anima ls were hidden around the trail at Ford Nature Center and the children had to follow Bartolone to hunt for the stuffed animals that served as their food. The program finished with the children splitting up into two packs. One pack would try to intimate the other pack of wolves that were trying to move into their homes. Ford Nature Center hosts different monthly programs to allow children to engage in educational activities about nature and wildlife.
