Scientists starting young at Poland library By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Children gathered at the Poland library on Jan. 15 to learn some science and try a variety of different hands-on activities. T he P re s c ho ol S c ienc e event is part of a story time that Poland library hosts several times a month for different age groups. “We are starting to try an even i ng stor y t i me a few times a month. We are going to try to have a different theme every month,” said librarian Amanda Kollar. T he ch i ld ren a nd t hei r caregivers listened to Kollar read the book “Space Walk” by Salina Yoon before any of the activities started. The book was about a space guide who walked the children around the planets and taught them something about each planet. W hen the stor y was finished, Kollar started the different experiments she had to show everyone. Experiments t hat Kolla r demonstrated included a tornado made from glitter and water in a bottle and how you can see a rainbow in a bowl of milk. Kollar finished showing the children a few experiments, and then she directed them to other experiments she had set up on the tables. These experiments were designed to encourage the ch i ld ren to be ha nds on. There were magnets to play with among other smaller experiments. Having a Preschool Science event gives the children an opportunity to come to the library and learn new things during story time. It encourages hands on activities, rather than just listening to a book and coloring a picture.

‘Deep’ by Northern Whale. It’s really cool when it’s playing and we look around the restaurant, and find a few people tapping their foot or wondering what the song is,” said lead singer Jake Capezzuto. The band consists of three members; Jake Capezzuto (lead vocalist and keys), Brandon Fisher (vocals and drums) and Scott Davis (guitar). Northern Whale started in 2009 with Capezzuto and Fisher. Davis later joined in 2014 as the new guitarist. “If we did win, we’d use the

money towards more gear or studio time. Every penny would go back into the band in some way, shape or form,” said Capezzuto. The artists will be judged in two rounds by Duran Duran, Dwight Yoakam, Bebe Rexha and Adam Lambert. Students rolled their pinecones in birdseed until they were covered. When they finished, they wrapped their birdfeeders in wax paper and put them in a bag to take them home.

Students build bird feeders and help save environment By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Poland North Preschool invited Peg Flynn from the Green Team to the school on Jan. 11. Flynn combined fun with learning to teach the students about recycling and making the Earth a clean place. Two classes entered the gym for a book and activity that Flynn had planned out. The students sat on the floor and listened to Flynn talk about how recycling is beneficial to

the planet. After giving a speech about recycling, Flynn read the book “Stranger in the Woods” by Carl Sams. The book was about a snowman that a couple of children built and the animals in the woods that wanted to go up to the snowman, which they thought was a stranger, to see who he was. The animals had different reactions to the mysterious object that appeared after a winter storm. See BIRD, Page 13

When Flynn finished reading the book, she told the students they would make bird feeders out of pinecones, Crisco and bird seed. The students would be able to take the bird feeders home and put them outside for the birds. When the bird seed was gone, the students could reuse the pinecone to make another one. All the students would need to do is add peanut butter or Crisco and bird seed back on the pinecone. “My co-worker and I go to schools in Mahoning County. I do the suburban area and she does the rural area. We go to any school that calls us,” said Flynn. The Green Team is eager to go to schools and teach the students and teachers about recycling and how to keep the land clean. Flynn said they read a different book to the schools each month and have different activities for the students to participate it, but the bird feeders are a common one
