Sausage and pancake breakfast set for Feb. 3 The Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus #3930 will sponsor a sausage and pancake breakfast from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 3, at the parish center, 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown. The menu will consist of sausage and a variety of all-you-can-eat pancakes and beverages. The cost for adults is $5 and $3 for children 12 and younger.

Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. Mardi Gras Party to benefit Hospice of the Valley Hospice of the Valley will host their 17th annual Mardi Gras Party on Feb. 9 at Mr. Anthony’s, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. ABWA to meet on Feb. 12 The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Feb. 12 meeting at Al A Cart Catering in Canfield. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes stuffed baked pork chops, Swiss chicken, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, apple sauce, pickled beets, dessert, coffee and tea. Tales and talk for 2s and 3s Join the Austintown library every Wednesday in February at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult. A holiday program will be held Feb. 13.

Bonding with babies and books This event, which will take place every Tuesday in February at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months.

There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Evening story time This once-a-month evening story time features stories, movement and early literacy education. The next event will take place on Feb. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library.

The evening story time is open to anyone, but geared toward preschool children and their families.

Purple Star Committee members visit Austintown

Members of the Ohio Department of Education’s Purple Star Committee visited Austintown Fitch High School on Jan. 23 to see the Purple Star room.

Representatives Chip Merkle and Pete LuPida traveled from Columbus to see the room first hand, stating Austintown is the only one of 142 Purple Star schools in Ohio with a designated space for students.

“They are doing a great job of supporting military families, they really are,” Merkle said. “I wish everybody would give it that kind of effort.”

Austintown received the Purple Star Award from the ODE in March 2018, and unveiled the room shortly after.

LuPida said that the award was created in the Fall of 2016, after months of meetings surrounding the criteria.

“We said, ‘How do we create military friendly?’ because that’s a label and what’s the serious criteria behind that,” LuPida said. “We had focus groups and conference calls, online surveys and we met across Dayton and Columbus with

veterans, educators, military students, K-12 kids, parents, spouses and said, ‘Well lets come up with that criteria,’ and that’s what we did.”

The criteria includes the school having a staff point of contact for military students and families to communicate between them and the school, as well as a page on the schools web site for military resources.

Merkle said that Austintown Fitch High School went above and beyond expectations for the award.

“We weren’t really expecting anything like this,” LuPida said.

“We got to meet the artist and residents here who created all of this.”

Merkle had visited the room previously, following a meeting with Austintown communication representative Brittany Bueno.

“He stood there for 30 seconds without saying anything, and I asked him if he was okay and he said, ‘I’m amazed,’” Kenneth Jakubec said, a military veteran and a member of the veterans day committee at Austintown who escorted Merkle on his first visit.

Merkle explained that after the first showing of the room, he knew he needed to bring other members of the ODE to see it.

Along with Merkle and LuPida, representatives from the school district, local veterans, recruiters and members of the students serving veterans committee and purple star students attended the event.

“We were standing by the one out front, I asked how ours was compared to other schools and he [Merkle] said there aren’t any like this,” Jakubec said. “This is absolutely amazing.”

The group had dinner, provided by the school, and then engaged in a conversation about possible ways to improve the ODE Purple Star program, setting an example for other Ohio schools and states looking to adopt the program.

“In no way at all is it a mandate which means it has to be organic, it has to be home grown,” LuPida said.

Jakubec said that there were different ideas surrounding ways to use the space, including starting a signing day for students who are enlisting.

“For me, kids are signing because they are getting a scholarship to play football, these kids are signing to serve their country,” Jakubec said.

Other ideas were offered up

by Purple Star student Stephanie Mulligan, who said she wanted to expand the program, having Purple Star students and members of the SSV organization travel to other schools to educate them.

“A lot of people tend to not know what it means that I am a Purple Star kid, they don’t understand that my brother is deployed, or what that means for my family,” Mulligan said.

LuPida said the idea behind the brain storming session was to combine the most involved members of the community to find the best ways to serve the students.

“It’s got to be not just the full time school district staff but it has to be the folks in the building, the community leaders, that’s what you see here, and that’s what makes up the purple star committee because no one in Columbus can say do this or do that it has to be home grown,” LuPida said.

Austintown Middle School student and published author Reagan Nevels had a book signing event at Barnes and Noble on Jan. 19.

Nevels was signing copies of her book, “Vision Collision,” which is about her four step process to accomplishing your goals.

The steps are think, write, believe and achieve, Nevels said, and can be adapted to any dream someone may have.

“Think is the process where your mind manufactures ideas and it turns them into thoughts, and if you gather all of your thoughts together and you go to write,” Nevels said.

Once you write your ideas down, Nevels said it is key to believe in yourself to be able to accomplish your goals.

“I also talk about having two accountability persons. One person to hold you accountable and say you want this dream or goal accomplished at this time and so you have to get a move on, and one person to inspire you to encourage you to say its never to late or too early for you to accomplish those dreams,” Nevels said.

She said that her accountability people are her mom, who always keeps her on track, and her family who always encourages her.

After going through all three steps and preparing yourself, Nevels said that then you can achieve your goals, “Most people think achieving is the easiest, which it isn’t,”

Nevels said. “It’s where you put everything into action, all you had to do before is to think write and believe but after you get all of those tools and you have all of those steps you can put everything into action from there.”

Nevels is currently an eighthgrader at AMS, and she said her inspiration for writing this book came from using this system for her own writing.

“I honestly didn’t know that I was going to write this type of book,” Nevels said. “I kept writing and writing I found that this is the four step process I was using and I figured that it would be useful to help other people who were trying to do the same thing.”

As a published author who is still in school, Nevels said a lot of her classmates do ask her for help.

“It’s different, it’s unique.

People are asking me questions throughout the day having me help them with their writing essays and things like that because they know I have wrote a book,” Nevels said.

Nevels has another book in the works, the title of which she won’t release until it comes out, but will be published in 2019.

“This book is focused on young people to encourage them and know it’s never too late to start accomplishing your dreams and goals,” Nevels said.

Along with her interest in writing self help books, Nevels said she loves writing mysteries and is considering writing a children’s series.

“I enjoy writing, and this is just a way for me to continue to do that,” Nevels said.

St. Christine’s Catholic School hosted a school-wide Spelling Bee on Jan. 17.

Students from grades fourth through eighth competed for the title of winner and runner up.

Twenty students competed in the Spelling Bee, with four students from grade competing.

Students were chosen by winning their classroom Spelling

Bee competitions.

The spelling bee lasted for 11 rounds before two students were left.

Eighth-grade student Noah Lytle took first place in the competition with the final word martyr.

Sixth-grade student Anthony Yarger was the runner up.

Lytle will go on to compete in the Vindicator Spelling Bee on March 16 at Youngstown State University.

The Austintown Bounce hosted a Christmas party on Dec. 15.

According to co-owner Bruce Shepas, 120 children and their families attended the event.

“To see all of these children having a fun and affordable time couldn’t make me happier,” Shepas said.

Ever yone in attenda nce received a hotdog, d r i n k and a snow globe for free.

Santa Claus was also present at the event, taking pictures with

children and passing out candy canes.

“I love being part of this community,” Shepas said. “I look forward to each holiday we have here every year.”

Shepas also passed out prizes and organized games for those in attendance.

The event was organized by Shepas and co-owner Harold Porter.

The ceremony was officiated by the Rev. John Keehner. An evening reception took place at The Vineyards at Pine Lake in Columbiana.

Garry and Kathy Boosinger of Poland are the parents of the bride.

The groom is a son of Steven and Nancy Schoenfeld of Canfield.

The bride wore a fit-and-flare style gown designed with a sweetheart neckline and sheer sleeves and trimmed with lace and beading.

Megan Boosinger, sister of the bride, served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids, wearing plum-colored dresses, were Mary Sacui and Monica Simko, cousins of the bride; Natalie Schoenfeld, sister of the groom; Kara Sliwinski; Lindsay DeVecchio; Brittany Strawinski; and Ashley Rubosky.
