Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Mardi Gras Party to benefit Hospice of the Valley Hospice of the Valley will host their 17th annual Mardi Gras Party on Feb. 9 at Mr. Anthony’s, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. ABWA to meet on Feb. 12 The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Feb. 12 meeting at Al A Cart Catering in Canfield.

Decorate an ornament for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree during regular hours in February. This event is for children of all ages.

Kindergarten readiness stations Kindergarten readiness stations are in every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of February, the stations focus on cognitive skills. This includes the development of memory, symbolic thought, reasoning and problem-solving. These skills support learning in all subjects. Before kindergarten, children should be able to communicate about past events and anticipate what comes next during familiar routines and experiences. They should also be able to solve everyday problems based upon past experiences. Our kindergarten readiness stations offer fun activities to build these skills. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. Stop by any branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station and help your child build these important skills.

Fundamental research approaches for business and life In a world of access to the depths and breadth of information unthinkable a century ago, it is more important than ever to develop some skills in research.

Poland quiz bowl team takes on Boardman

Poland and Boardman Quiz Bowl teams faced off on Jan. 16 at Poland Seminary High School.

Students at both Poland practice on a weekly basis for the tournaments, which take place every Wednesday.

“Practice is similar to Jeopardy, we have questions from previous matches and buzzers,” said Coach Scott Suchora. “We laugh as much as possible.”

Students’ official practice is a few hours per week according to Suchora, who explained that student commitment is much more than that.

“In truth, kids are on the NAQT website and YouTube studying all the time,” Suchora said.

He said that the Poland team has been involved in academic challenge since the 1980s.

Suchora said that the tournaments run throughout January and February, but students prepare for them way in advance.

“Poland plays about f ive matches a year,” Suchora said.

“This year we are away twice: South Range and Champion, then we will participate in the league tournament at YSU.” The Mahoning County League culminates annually at a tournament at Youngstown State University, which will take place

on Feb. 23 this year.

Suchora said that the Poland team places second in the division last year.

Poland lost to the Boardman team, with the junior varsity scoring 70-365 in round one and 50-160 in the second round. The varsity team also lost to Boardman, scoring 215-535 in round one and 175-440 in the second round.

Children learn about birds at the Mill Creek Park

Mill Creek Park hosted its Tales for Tots event on Jan. 18 at the Ford Nature Center for children ages 2-3.

Naturalist Marilyn Williams ran the event, with the theme of winter birds.

“We’re going to talk about how they come in different colors and the different foods they eat and how they find their food,” Williams said.

Four children gathered at the event, where Williams read books to the children and organized crafts.

“I really want kids to explore the outdoors, because we often get stuck inside too much, hopefully it will stay with them

throughout their lives,” Williams said.

During the event, Williams read the group gathered two books about local birds.

After reading, children worked on home made bird feeders made from recycled material.

The Mill Creek Park provided the group with half gallon jugs, cut to look like owls, that children painted and then took home to hang outside and fill with sunflower seeds for birds.

Williams also took children to use binoculars to observe the bird feeders at the Ford Nature Center and see what they could identify.

They then went outside and tried to hand feed black chickadees.

Girls defeat Struthers The Poland Seminary High School girls varsity basketball team defeated Struthers with a score of 51-31 on Jan. 17. Sarah Bury was top scorer with 17 points, while Jackie Grisdale had 15 points and Kat Partika had eight points. Poland’s record is 15-0, AAC 8-0. The junior varsity team also earned a win.

Five junior students in the Creative Arts and Design program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center won a statewide multimedia contest put on by the Ohio Civil Rights Commision for their video on a reflection of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The contest was intended to encourage students to reflect upon Dr. King’s life, philosophy and impact on the Civil Rights Movement and present day America. They were tasked to answer, “What more can you do to continue Dr. Martin Luther King’s fight for equality and justice?” The students involved administrators, other students, and the school resource officer in the video.
