Alyssa Gartner, eighth-grader at Austintown Middle School, received an award on Jan. 6 for being the winner of the Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.
said Gartner. “I would do it again.” Gartner said she got the idea because she thinks how people are scared to send a text message when talking to someone in particular or about a certain subject. The poem showed how Gartner finally faced her fears and became brave enough to actually hit “send” this time. Gartner was awarded a plaque and a
check for being the winner. The contest allows teens to express themselves through writing. Teens from all across Mahoning County will submit their poems online, in the libraries or through their school if it was a classroom assignment. Beach said she is eager to incorporate more writing activities for teens and children in the libraries.

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A program of a knitted headband with right and left twists will be presented by Shawn Anderson. Those wishing to participate should bring size 8 US circular knitting needles, scissors, a stitch marker and a tapestry needle. The pattern will be provided. Anyone interested in joining the Guild or donating yarn for charity work can contact wrkg.ohio@gmail.com.
Eighth-grade student Alyssa Gartner from Austintown Middle School received a special visit from a representative of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County on Jan. 6. Cindy Beach, the assistant manager of programming and youth services for the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, came to AMS to present Gartner with an award. The Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest occurs during the month of October for teen read week. The contest is in honor of Danielle Scott, a member of the Teen Advisory Board, who passed away from cancer. Teens in grades seven through 12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County may enter. “I was very happy with the entries, we had a lot of really good ones. It wasn’t easy to judge,” said Beach. The theme for this year’s contest was a six-word memoir. The poem had to be a story of the teen’s life wrapped up in six words. “This Time, I Actually Hit Send” was the six-word memoir Gartner wrote for the contest. Angela Yohman made the contest a class assignment so all of her students entered. “I was excited, but nervous,”

Gabby watched as her water bottle overflowed with bubbles during a Mad Science experiment on Jan. 19 at Fellows Riverside Gardens.
Children sprout into scientists By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children became young scientists practicing experiments during the Mad Science Sprout Club at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Jan. 19. Lynn Zocolo, horticulture director, was the lead scientist who demonstrated the experiments to the children. Zocolo started the afternoon with a picture of plant roots and explained how the roots are used to absorb water for the plants.
This was put into a visualization by using water, celery, food coloring and paper towels. In one cup there was a piece of celery in colored water which allowed the children to see the water move through the celery stalk. The second way of showing walking water was sticking a napkin in a cup of yellow water, a napkin in a cup of blue water and placing both napkins in an empty cup. The water would absorb into the napkins and transfer into the empty cup.
Many of the experiments performed were hands-on allowing the children to see how things worked. Children had the opportunity to microwave soap and watch it turn into a cloudlike shape. The air bubbles in the soap expanded, but the soap was still solid and could be used as a normal body soap. One of the favorite experiments was referred to as the exploding toothpaste experiSee SPROUT, Page 7

ment. The children mixed together yeast, water, peroxide and food coloring. When all of the ingredients were mixed
together in a water bottle, the mixture would start to foam and come out of the bottle. The children’s faces lit up when they saw the colorful bubbles flowing out. A final experiment focused on the ability to differenti-
sus the apple with their noses plugged, but others could not. When the program was over, the children enjoyed a snack before they went home. Zocolo made edible slime for the children to take home as well. Zocolo said she put in a lot
of hard work and preparation for this program, but it was all worth it to see the looks on the children’s faces when they take part in the experiments. The next Sprout Club will be on Feb. 16 and the children will learn about air plants.

Children celebrate summer fun in winter weather By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Austintown librar y brought warmth to the winter season during the Celebrate Summer event on Jan. 20. Youth librarian Nikki Puhalla organized the event as a way to give the children an opportunity to get out of the cold weather funk and into
warmer spirits. The Austintown library hasn’t hosted an event like this before, so Puhalla was excited to try something new for the children. The room was filled with games, crafts and a snack all tied together with an ocean theme. There were goldfish crackers, crafts to make fish and other sea creatures and plenty

of games for the children to participate in. Puhalla said she was happy with the turnout for it being at a later time on a Thursday night. The program began with a story before the children went their own way to play games and make crafts. A table full of books about summer and the ocean were put on display and
were available for the children to check out. The children spent time at each section playing games and making crafts to take home. The program ended with a snack before the children went home. Puhalla said the Austintown library will be hosting more upcoming programs for both adults and children.

Globetrotters’ give bullying prevention program Neighbors | Submitted
The Harlem Globetrotters, best known for their high flying basketball techniques, took their talents to another stage for a special presentation on bullying prevention. On Jan. 18, Austintown Intermediate students listened to speaker and Harlem Globetrotter, Zeus McClurkin, about the ABCs of Bullying Prevention. During the presentation, Zeus shared some of his basketball tricks, played listening games and spoke about Action, Bravery and Compassion, the tools that children can use on a daily basis to reduce bullying. The Globetrotters designed the prevention program in coordination with the National Campaign to Stop Violence (NCSV). The program targets children 6-12 years old in an effort to impact schools and communities around the world.
Who said that? Black History Month contest Match the African American heroes to their equally famous quotations at the Austintown library during library hours in February. A winner will be selected from the correct entries to receive a prize. This is for children, tweens and teens.

Junior League of Youngstown hosts Pink Ribbon Tea T he Ju n ior L eag ue of Youngstown sponsored the 22nd annual Pink Ribbon Tea at Stambaugh Auditorium. Dr. Rashid Abdu served as Honorary Chairman. There were 485 guests at the celebration, where breast cancer survivors attend free of charge, made possible by donations from the group’s underwriters, sponsors and Junior League members. The Junior League of Youngstown made a $500 donation in honor of Joanie Abdu and will benefit the fund of Joanie’s Promise through the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. The funds will be used for women who are under-insured or those who are without insurance and cannot afford the diagnostic fees associated with a mammogram. T he Ju n ior L eag ue of Youngstown has served the Mahoning Valley for more than 85 years. This local non-profit organization will solidify its commitment of helping women celebrate survival. The Pink Ribbon Tea has had approxi-
mately 7685 participants since the event began in 1994 during the LPGA Tournament in Howland. Members Sue Berny and Annette Camacci were the catalyst who honored breast cancer survivors and tied the event into the Ladies Professional Golf Tournament, LPGA. The LPGA, at one time, had breast cancer as its focus issue. Since its founding in 1901 by social activist Mary Harriman, the Junior League has evolved into one of the oldest, largest and most effective women’s volunteer organizations in the world, encompassing more than 150,000 women in the 291 Leagues in four countries. T he Ju n ior L eag ue of Youngstown is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. For more information to join, contact Membership Chairman Paige Rassega at 330-743-2000.
