Students spin wheel and try new veggies By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

West Boulevard Elementary introduced a new, fun way to try different vegetables during their lunch period on Jan. 21. Natalie Winkle, the Boardman food service director, and Beth Stefura, an Ohio State University extension educator on nutrition, brought in a wheel with various vegetables on it for the students to spin. The “Wheel of Food” had vegetables such as lima beans, spinach, garbanzo beans, edamame, zucchini fries, roasted carrots and spicy black beans. The students would spin the wheel and whatever vegetable the wheel stopped on, the students would try it. “We are introducing different types of vegetables and increasing their awareness. Some of these might even go on the menu,” said Stefura. Stefura and Winkle tried the same thing at Center Middle School on Jan. 20 with grades 5-8. The fifth- and sixth-graders were excited and more open to try the new vegetables, but the seventh- and eighth-graders

were more apprehensive. “The younger kids are more willing to try the new vegetables. Older kids are more set in their ways already,” said Winkle. The younger students weren’t afraid to hold back what they thought about the taste. The facial expressions gave it away for

most of the students. Although there didn’t seem to be a favorite at West Boulevard, the spicy chick peas were very popular at Center Middle School. A U.S. Department of Education grant made the food wheel possible. Stefura was able to travel to four schools with the grant, Austintown Fitch, Spring-

field, Sebring and Boardman. The grant was given out to try and allow schools to increase awareness of different ways to healthy eating. “We had to refill the vegetables four times because the kids loved it so much. It’s difficult to keep up with the demand,” said Winkle.

TouchTunes is the largest in-venue interactive music and entertainment platform and is featured in more than 70,000 bars and restaurants across North America and Europe. Northern W hale’s single, “Deep,” is competing against almost 300 other unsigned artists and their singles. The winner of the competition will win a live audition with Warner Brothers Records A&R, a music promotion on TouchTunes and $3,000. “It feels amazing to be in this, not even necessarily for the contest, but it’s really cool to be on TouchTunes. By being at a TouchTunes Jukebox location, such as Buffalo Wild Wings, you can download the app or simply walk up to it and play ‘Deep’ by Northern Whale. It’s really cool when it’s playing and we look around the restaurant, and find a few people tapping their foot or wondering what the song is,” said lead singer Jake Capezzuto. Two women listened carefully as the letters and numbers for Bingo were called at Senior Fun Day. Bingo is played at every Senior Fun Day and is one of the most anticpated activities during the event.

Fun-filled activities for seniors By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Every third and fourth Thursday of the month, Boardman Park hosts a Senior Fun Day at the Lariccia Family Community Center. The first Senior Fun Day of 2016 occurred on Jan. 21. The event is three hours long and consists of different activities for those who come to enjoy. There is a fee of only $1 and with that there is lunch, a craft, exercise, a blood pressure screening

and Bingo. Boardman Park and Senior Independence are in partnership for this event and those who sponsor it are Sunrise Assisted Living, the Blackburn Home and Shepherd of the Valley. There are usually around 70 seniors who attend and come spring, more people will come out to enjoy the nicer weather. Many people that attend are regulars and come as often as they can. A lot of the seniors also come with a group of their friends.

Having senior fun day gives people the opportunity to get out and socialize with their friends who they may not see often, while also meeting new people. One of the favorite parts of the day is Bingo. There are three to four games that are played, and they play until there are at least three winners per game. “It’s a lot of fun for seniors to get out and not have Winter blues, and enjoy a couples hours at the park and out with their friends,” said Boardman Park recreation director, Karen McCallum.
