board member, Dave Smith. For those who chose not to dine in, a take out option was provided. People could come in and pick out their food to put in a container and take on the go. One guest, who explained that she is not a pancake fan, even said how the pancakes were light, fluffy and delicious. The pancake breakfast gave community members an opportunity to socialize over breakfast. Several groups of

Smith called the event a “pancake social.” The turnout was more successful than the committee had originally thought. Being the first fundraiser, they didn’t know what to expect. After the success of this event, Celebrate Poland is hoping to make the pancake breakfast an annual event.

Poland Union is the new home to a 55-gallon saltwater aquarium. Donations from the PTO, Rob Rupeka, Nadene Vrabel, and Todd and Debbie Bury made the idea of having something unique and interesting be put into the school for the students to enjoy come to life. Several volunteers helped put everything together that was needed to make the aquarium a suitable home for fish, hermit crabs, starfish and snails. Reef Breeders donated the LED light for the tank and has also offered to donate coral. Harbor Pets in Boardman is were the majority of the items were purchased. Employees of Harbor Pets volunteered their time to come to the school to set up the tank and with that came a good partnership between Union and Harbor Pets. Harbor Pets is also planning on coming back to the school to speak to the students about how to care for the fish and any other pets. The tank was set up before the students left for winter break, which gave the water time to cycle itself to become an appropriate home for the sea creatures. The first fish was added on Jan. 11 and now there are five fish, 30 hermit crabs, seven snails and eight brittle starfish. Principal Michael Masucci is hoping to have nine to ten fish in the aquarium. Bryan Minehart, one of the

Minehart also donated gallons of water for Union to use in their tank. “I’ve been here only three months and I am so impressed with the creative environment that the staff and everyone here has taken upon themselves to encourage these students to broaden their horizons, learn as much as they can about as many things as they can, and I think this is a wonderful endeavour for these kids. They’re going to learn so much,” said Nadene Vrabel. A program called “Aqua Dogs” will soon start with the Poland Seminary High School students

Local churches to offer Lenten luncheons

Several families attended the event and helped each other make bird feeders. Guests could use the paint to decorate the bottles however they liked.

Day with the birds at Ford Nature Center By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Ford Nature Center gathered different ingredients for their It’s For the Birds event on Jan. 16. Marilyn Williams, a naturalist at Ford Nature Center, led the class in making different kinds of bird feeders. The participants could make bird feeders using a pop bottle, a small log or a pinecone. Bird seed, peanut butter and paint was all supplied for guests to use to decorate their feeders. Many of the people who used the pop bottle painted the

bottle to look like a snowman. A tin pan attached to the bottle underneath the bottle allowed bird seed to be placed in the pan. Each of the feeders had a ribbon at the top so the people attending could hang them up on a tree, bush or anything else they wished. Children and adults both attended the event, making it into an opportunity for families to spend quality time with one another. Once everyone finished their bird feeders, they were able to take them home and put them outside for the birds to eat from.

While some people worked on make bird feeders inside, there were others who enjoyed the scene outside. Some of the guests at Ford Nature Center stood outside with bird seed in their hands and waited for birds to come to them. The bird that people were on the lookout for was the Blackcapped Chickadee. Whether it was spent inside or out, the birds were the center of attention for the morning at Ford Nature Center.

Fun-filled activities for seniors By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Ever y t h i rd a nd fou r t h T hu r s d a y of t he mont h , Boardman Park hosts a Senior Fun Day at the Lariccia Family Community Center. The first Senior Fun Day of 2016 occurred on Jan. 21. The event is three hours long and consists of different activities for those who come to enjoy. There is a fee of only $1 and with that there is lunch, a craft, exercise, a blood pressure screening

and Bingo. Boardman Park and Senior Independence are in partnership for this event and those who sponsor it are Sunrise Assisted Living, the Blackburn Home and Shepherd of the Valley. There are usually around 70 seniors who attend and come spring, more people will come out to enjoy the nicer weather. Many people that attend are regulars and come as often as they can. A lot of the seniors also come with a group of their friends.

Having senior fun day gives people the opportunity to get out and socialize with their friends who they may not see often, while also meeting new people. One of the favorite parts of the day is Bingo. There are three to four games that are played, and they play until there are at least three winners per game. “It’s a lot of fun for seniors to get out and not have Winter blues, and enjoy a couples hours at the park and out with their friends,” said Boardman Park recreation director, Karen McCallum.
