Jobs skills workshop available at YWCA YWCA Mahoning Valley will host a job skills workshop beginning Feb. 11.

The workshops will run from 9 a.m. until noon Monday through Thursday through Feb. 28. Participants will receive instruction in career exploration, resume writing, interviewing practice, job stability and financial literacy. The workshops are open to women and men, age 18 and older.

Participants who attend all sessions will receive a $100 stipend. YWCA’s job skills workshops help participants increase their employability and remove barriers to gainful employment to meet the demands of a challenging and changing job market. Austintown Schools welcome new EMIS Coordinator The Austintown Board of Education approved to appoint Rory Tiedemann as the District EMIS Coordinator at the January regular meeting. The EMIS Coordinator is responsible for collecting data and reporting it to the Ohio Department of Education. Tiedemann earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

from the University of Mount Union and a Master’s degree from Western Kentucky University. He was most recently the Director of Operations at the Promise Academy in Cleveland.

He was also the Assistant Director at Invictus High School and Business Manager at Image Schools, where he earned Auditor of the State Awards.

Austintown Local School District announces open enrollment 2019-2020 The Austintown Local School District will again have statewide open enrollment for the 2019-2020 school year. Applications will be accepted for students in grades kindergarten through eighth-grade based on grade level availability. Applications are now available on the Austintown School’s website at www.austintownschools.org. In order to be accepted for open enrollment, completed applications must be submitted online. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Any students living in the state of Ohio and entering grades kindergarten through eighth are eligible. One application must be completed for each student. No new students will be accepted in grades 9-12. Only existing open enrollment students and those in special programs will be accepted into the high school. Open enrollment will close on April 30 for the 2019-2020 school year. Preschool accepting registrations The Austintown Community Church Preschool Childcare Center is registering children ages 3-10 for their summer program and for the 2019-20 school year.

Friendly Squares February square dance Local square dancing group, the Friendly Squares, will host their monthly square dance on Feb. 9, from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. Valentines will be the theme for the dance. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Austintown celebrates literacy on World Read Aloud Day

Austintown Intermediate School celebrated national World Read Aloud Day on Feb. 1.

All classrooms in the building participated by using teaching activities that involve reading, including inviting volunteers from the community to come read to students.

“In an age of technology where kids can read on tablets and everything like that, here they are actually talking about books and recommending them to one another, and just having fun reading,” said Teacher Teresa Lord.

Lord said her class has a number of activities planned to celebrate World Read Aloud Day. “We asked the kids to dress as their favorite character in literature,” Lord said. “Then they had to recommend the book to somebody else and say what the character does.”

Along with dressing up, students create book covers for books to hang in the hallways and presented on their favorite books during class.

Lord added that a number of guest speakers visited the school to read to students.

Austintown community members, former teachers and even representatives from the school board visited to read children their favorite books.

Austintown Fitch High School students also volunteered time during the day to visit AIS and celebrate with students.

“They are just having fun with it,” Lord said. “Just to see them encouraging the love of reading. I know that it’s corny but it’s true.”

Lord, along with her teaching partner, math teacher Terri Rasor, both dressed as their favorite literary characters for the day.

Lord dressed as Mr. Morris Lessmore from the “Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore” and Rasor dressed as the cat in “The Cat and The Hat” by Dr. Seuss.

“You help the children know that we are here in school and everyone has a story, and the value of books,” Lord said.

The tradition of celebrating World Read Aloud Day in Austintown has a long history, according to Lord.

She said that the old Woodside Elementary School was chosen by the state about a decade ago as a designated school by the program.

“They brought the professional ‘Cat and the Hat’ in. It was so cool that out of all of the schools in the country we were chosen,” Lord said.

The tradition remains alive thanks to the support of the Austintown Intermediate principal team, according to Lord.

“The principals are so supportive. They basically said, ‘This is a day to celebrate reading, have guests come in, have community members, have parents,’” Lord said.

“Where it’s not like you have to get the standard done or check this off, just embrace it.”

The Austintown marching band hosted its annual Jazz and Dessert fundraiser on Jan. 26.

The event was organized by the Austintown Band Parents Club, chaired by president Brad Gessner.

“It’s a great event we do every year, the band gets a lot from it and the community always has a good time,” Gessner said.

During the event, both professional and amateur bakers set up displays throughout the AMS cafeteria.

Each roll of 10 samples also has three votes, one for best amateur baker and one for best professional baker, as well as one for best display, which are awarded at the end of the night.

While community members sample treats and vote, four Austintown based jazz bands perform.

The Austintown Middle School jazz band, high school jazz 1 and 2, as well as the Fitch Alumni Band performed during the almost three hour event.

The Fitch Alumni band featured a singing performance by Austintown Alumni and local performer AnnaMaria Jadue, who sang “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” accompanied by the band.

The event also featured a Chinese Bakery Auction, with treats donated by the contestants, and a Chinese Auction for an electric guitar and amplifier which were donated by Dan and Rick Barber of the Music Gallery.

“We are very grateful for the support we receive from the community, through donations and by showing up to events like this,” Gessner said.

Baker Heather Lynn received first place in the professional baker category for the third year in a row, for her heart shaped buckeyes.

Mercedes Santiago received first in the amateur baker competition, winning for her Amaretto cupcakes.

Unauthorized use of property: A South Raccoon Road resident discovered a Skype account had been hacked.

Fraud: A Nashua Drive couple found out that $2,000 had been removed from their account.

Jan. 23 Stolen property: A man reportedly tried to return stolen property to Tractor Supply Co., 6225 Mahoning Ave. Theft: Niki M. Lanam, 29, of North Hazelwood Avenue, Youngstown, was charged with theft, criminal trespassing and falsification after being accused of intentionally failing to self-scan $42 worth of items at Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave. Lanam also provided a false name and was at the big-box store in violation of a trespassing warning police had issued in January 2018 warning her to stay off the property, a report showed.

Naturalist Marilyn Williams hosted the hand-feed a chickadee event at Mill Creek Park’s Ford Nature Center on Jan. 19.

“Ch ickadees a re cu r ious birds, in the winter time they need a lot of calories to keep warm,” Williams said.

She said that the park has been hosting this event on the first Saturday of January for years, but because of popularity it was moved to every Saturday in January.

Williams said that chickadees are naturally curious and friendly birds who don’t migrate in the winter.

Because they stick around all year the birds have multiple food patches where they can go so they don’t become dependent on one location.

“They are well adapted to finding food on their own,” Wi l lia ms sa id. “Especia l ly when it is rea l ly cold a nd snowy they need those calories and they need them fast to help them keep warm.”

Williams said the best time

to feed the birds is when it is really cold and snowy because that’s when the birds need the food the most.

“If you make a routine of it every morning and come outside at the same time while t hey a re wa it ing for food, they may land on your hard but even if they don’t they get close to you it’s just so nice to see them up close,” Williams said.

During the event Williams gives a brief explanation to community members about the birds, and then gives them handfuls of black sunf lower seeds to hand feed the chickadees.

“The black sunflower seeds are really good for that high calorie food and they’re good in fat,” Williams said.

It is against the rules in Mill Creek Park to feed the animals, Williams said, with the only exceptions being this program and the bird feeding areas.

“We feed them food they would naturally eat,” Williams said. “We never try to hand feed animals.”

Arrest: Police investigated a suspicious woman at a Seventy-Six Drive gas station, where they arrested Jeffrey A. Goley Jr., 31, shortly after the Canton man arrived at the location. Goley was wanted on a Stark County felony warrant charging domestic violence.

Theft: Officers were dispatched to the Trumbull County jail to take custody of Donovan J. Barwinski, 43, of Westview Avenue, Hubbard, who was charged with stealing about $157 worth of steaks last month from Giant Eagle, 5220 Mahoning Ave. Burglary: A man reportedly broke two windows to enter a home in the 3400 block of Black Oak Court before confronting the homeowner and fleeing on foot.

Jan. 25 Burglary: A woman told police she unwittingly allowed a man into her Kleber Avenue residence who pretended to be there to check the water before she discovered cash and coins missing from her home, which also had been ransacked.

Jan. 26 Fraud: A Nantucket Drive resident noticed an unauthorized credit-card purchase had been made.

Overdose: A man and a woman were taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after an apparent drug overdose in the 3900 block of Monaca Avenue.

Jan. 27 Theft: Autumn S. Reeves of Overlook Way, Lake Milton, and Elizabeth E.G. Lilly of Mahoning Avenue, North Jackson, faced theft charges.

The two 18-year-old women admitted having stolen about $123 worth of clothing and boots from Walmart, police alleged.

Drug paraphernalia: A traffic stop on Mahoning Avenue resulted in a charge of possessing drug paraphernalia against Joshua R. Kosa, 36, when, authorities alleged, two suspected crack-cocaine pipes were in his vehicle. Mill Creek Park hosted its Tales for Tots event on Jan. 18 at the Ford Nature Center for children ages 2-3.

Naturalist Marilyn Williams ran the event, with the theme of winter birds.

“We’re going to talk about how they come in different colors and the different foods they eat and how they find their food,” Williams said.

Four children gathered at the event, where Williams read

books to the children and organized crafts.

“I really want kids to explore the outdoors, because we often get stuck inside too much, hopefully it will stay with them throughout their lives,” Williams said.

During the event, Williams read the group gathered two books about local birds.

Evening story time This once-a-month evening story time features stories, movement and early literacy education.

The next event will take place on Feb. 18, at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. The evening story time is open to anyone, but geared toward preschool children and their families.

Kindergarten readiness stations Kindergarten readiness stations are in every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of February, the stations focus on cognitive skills. This includes the development of memory, symbolic thought, reasoning and problem-solving. These skills support learning in all subjects. Before kindergarten, children should be able to communicate about past events and anticipate what comes next during familiar routines and experiences. They should also be able to solve everyday problems based upon past experiences. Our kindergarten readiness stations offer fun activities to build these skills. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. PLYMC receives grant for mental health training

The federal Institute of Museum and Library Services granted the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning county a grant for Mental Health and First Aid training.

The grant, which totalled nearly $5,000, was awarded by the State Library of Ohio, under the Library Services and Technology Act according to library spokesperson Janet Loew.

One hundred library personnel and community members who are interested in the training will be able to participate.

Loew said that the participants will be trained to help commu-

nity members exhibiting signs of mental health issues or addiction and connect them to professionals. Training includes two Adult Mental Health First Aid sessions and two Youth Mental Health First Aid sessions, which will take place at the PLYMC library branches in upcoming months.

According to Aimee Fifarek, executive director of the PLYMC, those training sessions are not yet scheduled.

“Mental Health First Aid training is aimed at helping staff assist someone exhibiting problems related to issues such as mental illness, substance use, poverty or homelessness. Participants in the training will learn risk factors and warning signs, as well as

strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help,” Fifarek said in a press release.

Loew said the project will be coordinated by Adult Programming Specialist Kelly Kotel.

She explained that Kotel will be working with the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board and Alta Care Group to organize the training and provide instructors.

“Because our library system is a central source of providing access to information, we believe that it is perfectly suited to provide education about mental illness to our customers and our community,” Fifarek said.

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Austintown library on Feb. 19 from 1-6 p.m. The Red Cross bus will be in parking lot accepting donations. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1800-733-2767) or register online at www.RedCrossBlood.org.

Happily Ever After Sarah Bolina, Thomas Mitch plan spring vows Mark and Cheryl Bolina of Canfield and Ray Mitch of Butler, Pa., are announcing the engagement of their children, Sarah Bolina of Canfield and Thomas Mitch of Butler, Pa. The prospective groom also is a son of the late Carol Mitch.

The couple will marry May 4 at St. Michael Church in Canfield. A reception will follow at DeYor Performing Arts Center in Youngstown. Invitations will be issued for both events.

Miss Bolina graduated from Kent State University with a bachelor’s degree in early-childhood education.

She is pursuing a master’s degree from Youngstown State University in school psychology.

Kathr y n Marchese and Charles Carchedi were united in marriage Oct. 6 during a ceremony at Holy Family Church in Poland that was officiated by Monsignor William Connell. An evening reception took place at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Hall in Youngstown.

Cindy Marchese of Poland is the mother of the bride. The bride also is a daughter of the late Thomas Marchese.

Ted and Mary Jo Carchedi of Poland are the groom’s parents.

The bride wore an ivory lace sheath gown adorned with beading.

Sarah Reese, matron of honor, and Jennifer Wymer, bridesmaid, are the bride’s sisters. Maddie and Ellie Wymer, nieces of the bride, were junior bridesmaids.

The attendants wore burgundy dresses.

Ben Umbel held the responsibilities of best man, and Chris Lovell served as groomsman.

Mrs. Carchedi is a physical therapist assistant for Pinnacle Health Concepts

in Boardman.

Her husband is a supervisor for Dearing Compressor & Pump Co. in Youngstown.

The couple honeymooned in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and reside in Poland.
