PSHS Class of 1969 to reunite on Aug. 3

YWCA Mahoning Valley will host a job skills workshop beginning Feb. 11.

The workshops will run from 9 a.m. until noon Monday through Thursday through Feb. 28. Participants will receive instruction in career exploration, resume writing, interviewing practice, job stability and financial literacy. The workshops are open to women and men, age 18 and older. Participants who attend all sessions will receive a $100 stipend. YWCA’s job skills workshops help participants increase their employability and remove barriers to gainful employment to meet the demands of a challenging and changing job market. The Poland High School Class of 1969 will host its 50th class reunion on Aug. 3 at the Reserve Run Golf Course’s Another Round Bar and Grille. Throughout the next few months, former classmates will meet to finalize plans for the evening event along with plans for additional get together activities on Aug. 2 and Aug. 4.

The next meeting of the planning committee will take place at 6 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. Poland Historical Society to have presentation The Poland Historical Society will meet on Feb. 19 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (State Route 224) in Poland Township. The regular business meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

Several members of the Historical Society’s Archival Committee will present a program at 7:30 p.m. titled, “A Look at the Poland Historical Society Collection and Archives.”

The society’s 2019 membership drive began in January. Dues are $10 per person for the calendar year. Send checks made payable to “Poland Historical Society,” PO Box 5052, Poland, OH 44514. Friendly Squares February square dance Local square dancing group, the Friendly Squares, will host their monthly square dance on Feb. 9, from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. Valentines will be the theme for the dance. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Poland Union celebrates Grandparents Day

The parking lot at Poland Union Elementary School was packed full on Feb. 5 for the school’s annual Grandparents Day celebration.

“Grandparents love it, this is something we like to have every year here at the school,” Principal Mike Masucci said.

The original event was sched-

uled for Jan. 30 but was rescheduled due to the weather.

Masucci said the event coincides with the school’s Scholastic Book Fair, giving grandparents a chance to see what their student is reading.

Members of the Parent Teacher Association organized and funded the event.

“We just want to get good books in the hands of kids,” Masucci said.

The PTO offered free snacks w ith a dinosaur theme for grandparents and elementary school students.

Students were also able to go “digging” to discover fossils and play with plastic dinosaurs.

PTO members also offered a craft, where students could decorate a foam frame with dinosaur stickers before taking a picture with their grandparents to put in the frame.

“We like to have a variety of things offered for students and grandparents to do together, so everyone isn’t waiting in line for books the whole time,” Masucci said.

NSS Life plans annual meeting The National Slovak Society (NSS Life) local assembly 731 will host its annual meeting at 1 p.m. on March 2 at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman. Election of officers will take place during this meeting. Members are asked to bring ideas and details to help plan assembly fraternal activities for 2019.

Palmer volunteered to bring their therapy dogs for children to see, and to raise awareness about therapy dogs work.

“They are always relaxed, even in situations like this where there’s a ton of children running around a room,” Alexandrides said. “That’s how these dogs are trained.”

Alexandrides also volunteers at the Poland library, bringing her therapy dog Roxie for children to read to at the monthly Read to Roxie event.

“Roxie loves being around people, and she loves kids,” Alexandrides said.

Grandparents and their students were also encouraged to walk through the book fair.

However much money the students spends on Scholastic book fair books and posters, the school receives a monetary percentage, or what is called Scholastic Dollars.

Masucci said that by receiving Scholastic Dollars, the school gets more distance for their money, and is able to make purchases through Scholastic for students throughout the year.

“At the beginning of the year I always buy every student a copy of a magazine, the Scholastic News, and we do other things with the money that go right back to the student,” Masucci said.

Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society

Mill Creek Park hosted a created your own succulent dish event on Jan. 19 at the Fellows Riverside Garden.

Instructor Judy Stanislaw hosted the event.

“We wanted a variety of succulents,” Stanislaw said, “It makes them more interesting to look at.”

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Feb. 12 meeting at Al A Cart Catering in Canfield.

The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes stuffed baked pork chops, Swiss chicken, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, apple sauce, pickled beets, dessert, coffee and tea. She instructed community members about the care of the plants as well, including how much to water them and the type of dirt the plants prefer.

“They prefer course dirt,”

Stanislaw said, “And very little water, which makes them the ideal plant to keep in your house.”

Stanislaw also instructed community members on how to use the leaves that fall off of the plants as fertilizer for the plants.

“As long as you treat them right succulents can be a very easy house plant to care for,” Stanislaw said. “And beautiful too.”

Spring athlete meeting offered The Poland High School athletic department will be having its spring sports parent meeting for any high school athlete involved in a spring sport. Nat u ra l ist Ma r i ly n Wi lliams hosted the hand-feed a chickadee event at Mill Creek Park’s Ford Nature Center on Jan. 19.

“Chickadees are curious birds, in the winter time they need a lot of calories to keep warm,” Williams said.

She said that the park has been hosting this event on the first Saturday of January for years, but because of popularity it was moved to every Saturday in January.

Williams said that chickadees are naturally curious and friendly birds who don’t migrate in the winter.

Because they stick around all year the birds have multiple food patches where they can go so they don’t become dependent on one location.

“They are well adapted to finding food on their own,” W i l l ia ms sa id. “Especia lly when it is really cold and snowy they need those calories and they need them fast to help them keep warm.”

Williams said the best time to feed the birds is when it is really cold and snowy because that’s when the birds need the food the most.

“If you make a routine of it every morning and come outside at the same time while t hey a re wa it ing for food, they may land on your hard but even if they don’t they get close to you it’s just so nice to see them up close,” Williams said.

During the event Williams gives a brief explanation to community members about the birds, and then gives them handfuls of black sunf lower seeds to hand feed the chickadees.

“The black sunflower seeds are really good for that high calorie food and they’re good in fat,” Williams said.

It is against the rules in Mill Creek Park to feed the animals, Williams said, with the only exceptions being this program and the bird feeding areas.

“We feed them food they would naturally eat,” Williams said. “We never try to hand feed animals.”
