J.P.’s teacher, Joann Matune, received a called from Jason’s wife, Jana, earlier that day saying Jason was planning to surprise his son at school. Matune then talked to Carpenter and suggested the whole school doing something in honor of the special moment. Students of St. Christine lined up outside, through the halls and all the way to the classroom of J.P.. Jason and Jana walked the hallways through all of the See HOMECOMING, Page 4

Guests came to the Austintown library on Jan. 27 to make a hot chocolate packet holder during the new paper crafting program.

Paper Crafting Corner is a new program the Austintown is going to be hosting every month. Every month there will be a new craft guests can make out of paper. Adult services librarian Lind-

sey Platt created the class as a way for guests to create something easy and different each time. The supplies used are provided by the library, but are supplies people may have at their homes.

Instructions were typed out and given to each person who came. The guests were able to take home the instructions if they wanted to make the craft again or give them to someone else to try out.

This month was the first time the program occurred. The guests who came made a pocket to hold a packet of hot chocolate. The craft was something See CRAFT, Page 7

St. Charles students work together with alumni from Cardinal Mooney High School on a community service activity during Catholic Schools Week.

Catholic Schools Week celebrated with community service National Catholic Schools Week is an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. The week’s theme – “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, K nowledge a nd Ser v ice” – highlights the schools’ focus on faith development, academic excellence and dedication to community service.

“Celebrating Our Community” was the daily theme as students at St. Charles elementary school spent the day working on a service project with alumni who now attend Cardinal Mooney High School. Kindergarten and first-grade students were assisted by the students from Mooney while creating care notes to be distributed to several area nursing homes.

A core aspect of Catholic education is learning the importance of serving others. Students taking part in service activities act upon the values and faith they acquire through their Catholic education. The students learn how to make the world a better place and they gain an appreciation for how they can continue to serve others throughout their lives.

The Austintown Democratic Club had its first meeting of the year recently and elected new officers. The club, formerly known as Austintown Democratic Men’s Club, was founded in 1959 for the purpose of stimulating an active interest in governmental affairs; to foster the principals of the Democratic Party and to keep members knowledgeable on national, state, county and local political issues. Newly elected officers will lead members in its 58th year of existence, making it the oldest continual political club in the Tri-County area. Among the elected officers is Bill Basista, who is a charter member and has served as its secretary since the early days of the club. Kathryn Miller is the first female office holder, elected as Vice President following her two terms as Trustee. Membership is open to any interested Democrat.
