Poetry contest winner Recently, Boardman High School freshman Siena Larrick received the award for First Runner Up of the Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest. The contest is sponsored by the Youngstown and Mahoning County Libraries, as well as TeenXTreme, in honor of Danielle Scott, a Teen Advisory Board member who lost her battle with cancer in 2006 at the age of 14. In order to qualify, students must be in grades 7-12 and have submitted an original poem with a theme of their choice.

All students submitting an entry must either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. The contest winner is awarded a plaque as well as a monetary prize.

Neighbors serves the towns of Boardman, Austintown, Canfield and Poland and is published every Saturday in The Vindicator. It also is distributed free to nonsubscribers in those towns.

Mahoning county Churches combine efforts for Lenten services The Mahoning County Lutheran Cluster of Churches will be hosting a Wednesday evening Lenten series based on the Covenant of Baptism and its importance in one’s spiritual life. Five area churches and their pastors will be participating. Each week a different pastor will preside at each church sharing their message about a portion of the Baptismal Covenant.

All are welcome to attend the services, which will take place on Wednesdays Feb. 17 through March 16 at any of the following locations and times: Bethel Lutheran Church services at 12 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., Grace Lutheran Church services at 7 p.m., Lord of Life Lutheran Church services at 7 p.m., Martin Luther Lutheran Church services at 12 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and Zion Lutheran Church services at 7 p.m.

Local students named to the Dean’s List The University of Akron (UA), Ohio’s Polytechnic University, is the region’s most influential public research university, contributing to the resurgence of the local economy, providing a highly skilled workforce and known for an innovative approach to higher education. Mooney announces 2016 Hall of Fame class Cardinal Mooney High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame, Ron Stoops Scholarship Dinner, will take place at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman on Feb. 14. Buffet dinner and open bar are scheduled from 6-8 p.m., with the induction ceremony to start promptly at 8 p.m. Tickets are $75, or $600 for a table of eight.

The Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee will be hosting two events in April benefiting the American Cancer Society. On April 13, a golf clinic will take place at Creekside Golf Dome in Girard from 6:30– 8:30 p.m. Participants will receive instruction and practice in driving, chipping and putting. GA to meet Gamblers Anonymous, a 12Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the YoungstownWarren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Boardman students named to Dean’s List at John Carroll University John Carroll University has announced the fall 2015 Dean’s List.

Students eligible for the Dean’s List must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours within one semester and have a quality grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Students from Boardman named to the list include Thomas Clarke, Dominic DiMuzio, Kacey Haggerty, Emily Ellis, Celia Giancola, Christian Lowery and Lucia DeChurch. John Carroll University is recognized nationally for an exceptional four-year graduation rate, teaching excellence and a commitment to living a faith that does justice as central to its mission. Literacy night in Boardman proves successful

Market Street Elementary School hosted a literacy night on Jan. 28 titled “Imagine With Us.” This literacy night was the sixth one of the year and is one of the biggest ones that have occurred.

The literacy night was sponsored by collaboration of the United Way and the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

“It’s a focus on early literacy.

We have the pop-up library here so they’re signing up people for library cards and people can actually check out books,” said Julie Kamenitsa, the Market Street Elementary Reading Intervention Specialist.

A few special guests made an appearance and spoke or read to the students and their families. “We have a program in the Summer, sponsored by United Way, called Success by Six for our incoming kindergartners.

The principal contacted the United Way because we had a concern for some of our students wanting to build their literacy skills,” said Kamenitsa.

The school and everyone involved wanted to have a night dedicated about literacy and why it’s so important. The literacy night had a high attendance and was a great opportunity for students and their families to expand their literacy skills.

Six members of the speech and debate team at Boardman High School have qualified to compete at the state level.

Students in the Youngstown District participated at the OHSSL Youngstown Speech and Debate Tournament, at Poland High School on Jan 29 and 30. The Boardman team managed to place six different students in five different categories. The group is led by first year head coach Elisabeth Miller and assistant coaches Randy Nord and Mark Modarelli.

Cardinal Mooney honors alumni The Cardinal Mooney Alumni Association presented its 2016 Distinguished Alumni Awards at a prayer service on Jan. 27.

This year’s recipients were Patricia Guidos, a 1959 graduate, and Thomas Mastramico, who graduated in 1972.

The Distinguished Alumni Awards are presented annually to awardees who, “demonstrate a continuing concern and dedication for others by embracing the Cardinal Mooney motto of Sanctity, Scholarship and Discipline.”

Fellows Riverside Gardens w elcomed chef David Armstrong on Jan. 19 to teach a cooking class. Armstrong led the class in a demonstration on how to make different types of soups and which wines and sides to pair them with.

Armstrong is the owner and chef of Cater 2 U, a Youngstown restaurant that specializes in catering. He has been to Fellows Riverside Gardens on several other previous occasions teaching classes and participating in other culinary events.

“I was trying to think of things that we can do. We have one of doing a lot of ingredients, we have a middle one and the easiest one will be the split pea with a little twist to it,” said Armstrong.

The guests learned how to make three different soups and then had the opportunity to try all of them at the end of the class.

fore the guests arrived because the class wasn’t long enough to make each soup. Armstrong had sides set on the table in the other room where the guests could eat.

There were croutons, Fritos and other small snacks that paired with the soup. There was also a selection of wine and other drinks that complimented the soup, as well.

“It’s not a hands-on class because we can’t do that here. I feel like most of the people come to be entertained by me,” said Armstrong.

Guests were able to enjoy a night of learning how to prepare new dishes, especially ones that warm you up in the cold weather, and then eat some soup afterward.

“Moonlight and Magnolias” auditions The Victorian Players will host auditions for “Moonlight and Magnolias” on Feb. 20 and 21 at 2 p.m. at the theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. Ashley Kent v Michael Metzinger St. Luke Church was the setting of the 1 p.m. Sept. 26 wedding of Ashley Taylor Kent and Michael Metzinger, who exchanged marriage vows before the Rev. Joseph Fata. A reception followed at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Hall in Youngstown.

The bride is the daughter of Sharon Kent of Youngstown and the late Aaron Kent. Thomas and Vinetta Metzinger of Youngstown are parents of the groom.

Cold weather provides opportunity for Boy Scouts to practice skills

Camp Stambaugh in Canfield was the home to several Boy Scouts for the annual Whispering Pines District Boy Scout Klondike Derby on Jan. 15 and 16. This year’s theme is the “Yukon Gold Rush.”

Boy Scout troops from Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, North Lima, Hubbard, North Jackson, Poland, Springfield, Struthers and Youngstow n stayed overnight at Camp Stambaugh to work on their outdoor scouting skills. The skills learned at the Klondike Derby are to help the Boy Scouts with any of their future scouting activities. The

Boy Scouts worked on First Aid, knot tying, fire building, identifying plants and different animals furs, antlers and skulls, and map reading.

“Klondike has been around since as long as Boy Scouts has been around,” said Camp Ranger, Nathan Plesea.

The Klondike Derby helped several Boy Scouts work on advancing their skills while also learning tips and tricks from other scouts.

All of Camp Stambaugh was utilized by the Boy Scouts and the various skill areas that were set up around camp. The boys set up their tents on Camp Akela, while the other activities took place either inside cabins or on

Each Boy Scout troop demonstrated their skills for the troop leader and at the end of the day, the Boy Scouts were graded on their performance. Those scouts who score the highest received an award. The troops made gokarts to race, but because there was no snow, they couldn’t race the cars. However, with some rain and wind, abilities were put to the test of how well the boys could complete the tasks in uncooperative weather.
