Local theater to present “Love Letters” The Dublin Grange Theatre Co. of Canfield will present “Love Letters” by A.R. Gurney on Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the play centers on two characters, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, who sit side by side at tables and read the notes, letters and cards they have sent each other. Spanning nearly 50 years, they discuss their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats that have passed between them throughout their separated lives. Terri Wilkes and Eric Kibler headline the show on Feb. 13. Produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, proceeds from “Love Letters” by A.R. Gurney will go towards the improvements for the theatre that features the AfterSchool Players, the area’s only theater organization featuring children as performers and behindthe-scenes artists. Students with or without experience are exposed to the audition process, casting, staging and blocking, lighting/sound instruction, stage managing, scenery creation and painting and stage managing instruction. Mill Creek MetroParks Farm visits CUMP By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Brenda Markley, Mill Creek MetroParks Farm agriculture education program manager, visited Canfield United Methodist Preschool to shared a farm story with the students Jan. 12. Markley read the students her childhood favorite, “The Little Red Hen.” “Today I have brought the farm to you,” Markely told the students in the 5-year-old class. “I am going to read you and share with you a farm story.” Ma rk ley broug ht a stor y board w it h her so t he students could follow along and she could illustrate the story so the children could visualize it. As the story progressed, Markely added cutouts of the characters made out of felt, which depicted what the characters were doing in the story. “We have three characters in this story, aside from Little Red Hen. We have the duck, dog and cat. As we go along, you ca n pretend to be t he characters each time one is mentioned. For the duck, you can waddle in your seats, for the dog you can put you hands up like paws and bounce and for the cat you can curl up with your hands on the side of your faces and pretend to nap,” Markley said. In the story, Little Red Hen asks her t hree friends, t he duck, the dog and the cat, to help her plant wheat seeds. When they all say no, she does it herself. When the wheat is grown, Little Red Hen asks her friends to help her cut it. When they said no again, she cuts the wheat herself. When the wheat is cut, Little Red Hen asks her friends to help her take it to the mill and have it ground into flour. When her friends, once again, say no, she takes the wheat to the mill herself. After she brings the sack of flour back to her house, she asks her friends to help her bake bread. Again,
they say no, so she bakes the bread herself. When the bread is ready, she asks them who would help her eat the bread. This time, the duck, dog and cat all say they will help. And Little Red Hen, says no and eats the bread herself. Markley told the children the lesson they learned from the stor y was to help their friends. “T he dog , duck a nd c at shou ld have helped t hei r friend, Little Red Hen, if they wanted to eat the bread. What I want you learn from this story is to think about helping. It’s a good idea,” Markley said. Markley brought with her items from the farm to show the children, like wheat seeds and grown wheat. Markley applied what happens i n t he stor y to what happens on the farm. She explained that at the farm, it is the farmer’s job to plant the wheat seeds and take care of it while it grows. The farmer then receives help from a combine to harvest the wheat. Markley explained this process with the help of a toy combine she brought with her. After harvesting, she said, the farmer’s job is done as he sells the wheat to the mill. The mil l g rinds t he wheat into flour and people can then bake bread, muffins, cookies, pancakes or tortillas with the flour. “This stor y is how to get bread from the stuff at the farm. This is what the farm is all about - growing and raising your food. ‘The Little Red Hen’ showed us all about that,” Markley told the students. As a special treat for the students, Mark ley announced she brought all the ingredients for them to make dough, but since there was no oven to bake it in, they would make play dough. The only stipulation was the students had to work together, unlike the characters in the story. Each group member was

assigned a job. One student added the bag of flour to the bowl. The next student added the water to the flour. The next student added the salt to the mixture and the next student added the oil. The last ingredient was a package of Kool-Aid to provide color and scent. Each student then took turns to stir the mixture. “You all need to work together and help to make the
play dough, unlike the dog, duck and cat,” Markley told the children. “Each of you has a job and all these jobs need to be combined to make the end product.” When the mixing and stirring was done, Markley handed each child their own ball of play dough. The children got creative and made things out of the play dough, like a snake, a doughnut, pancakes and snowmen.

Story signs with Ohio Dominican to play soccer By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Canfield High School senior soccer player Cheyenne Story signed her letter of intent to attend and play soccer for Ohio Dominican University at a signing ceremony in the high school’s athletic foyer on National Signing Day on Feb. 3. Canfield High School Athletic Director Greg Cooper welcomed the large crowd of Story’s family, friends, classmates and teammates to the signing ceremony. “Cheyenne is a young lady who exemplifies the student-athlete at Canfield High School. She has done a superlative job in the classroom and has been a fierce competitor on the soccer field. I know she will make us proud,” Cooper said. After Story signed her letter, Cooper asked Phil Simone, Canfield High School head soccer coach, to say a few words about Story. “Thank you for coming out for Cheyenne’s signing. Congratulations to Bill, Ashley and Cheyenne. I have watched Cheyenne
play since she was small and I have enjoyed coaching her as a player all these years. The Story family is like an extended family to me and my family, and it is hard to see her go. She helped us build our program and showed her great appreciation for the game. I know she will take what she has learned from all her coaches here in Canfield and will show well for us at the next level. I wish her the best and I know she will do great,” Simone said. Cooper then gave Story a chance to say a few words of her own. “I’d like to thank my dad, Bill Story, and Frank Mancini. They gave me my start in soccer. They showed me how to play and made me a better player. I’d also like to thank my teammates for pushing me every day in practice. And, of course, I’d like to thank Coach Simone for everything he’s done for me. And a special thanks to both my sister and teammate, Ashley, and best friend and teammate, Anita Mancini,” Story said. Story was an integral part of Canfield High School teams,

which won 63 of 81 games played throughout four years, earning four All-American Conference and three District championships, along with two Regional runner-up finishes. Individually, she was a fouryear varsity letter-winner, was named a team captain as a senior and earned two-time All-District all-star team recognition.

As a club team player, Cheyenne was a center back for the Cleveland Futbol Club, being selected as team captain for the 2015-2016 U.S. Youth Soccer National League team, earning a 2015 Midwest Regional League Premier championship and a 2014 Ohio North State Cup championship after being finalists in 2013 and 2015.
At Ohio Dominican, Cheyenne plans to pursue a major in Chemistry with the goal of becoming a physician’s assistant. “Canfield is a special place because of our students, parents and community. Cheyenne is one of Canfield’s finest. We send with her our best wishes as she prepares to go out into the world. We will miss her,” Cooper said.

Day with the birds at Ford Nature Center By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Ford Nature Center gathered different ingredients for their It’s For the Birds event on Jan. 16. Marilyn Williams, a naturalist at Ford Nature Center, led the class in making different kinds of bird feeders. The participants could make bird feeders using a pop bottle, a small log or a pinecone. Bird seed, peanut butter and paint was all supplied for guests to use to decorate their feeders. Many of the people who used the pop bottle painted the bottle to look like a snowman. A tin pan attached to the bottle underneath the bottle allowed bird seed to be placed in the pan. Each of the feeders had a ribbon at the top so the people attending could hang them up
on a tree, bush or anything else they wished. Children and adults both attended the event, making it into an opportunity for families to spend quality time with one another. Once everyone finished their bird feeders, they were able to take them home and put them outside for the birds to eat from. While some people worked on make bird feeders inside, there were others who enjoyed the scene outside. Some of the guests at Ford Nature Center stood outside with bird seed in their hands and waited for birds to come to them. The bird that people were on the lookout for was the Blackcapped Chickadee. Whether it was spent inside or out, the birds were the center of attention for the morning at Ford Nature Center.
