The Green Team’s Peg Flynn recently visited Poland’s After School Program and got everybody involved in turning a recyclable item, in this case a toilet paper roll, into one of their favorite animated characters. The students made their own takes on Olaf from “Frozen,” with each one being unique. Poland After School is located inside the old North Elementary Building. Poland students named to the University of Akron’s fall 2015 Dean’s List The University of Akron (UA), Ohio’s Polytechnic University, is the region’s most influential public research university, contributing to the resurgence of the local economy, providing a highly skilled workforce and known for an innovative approach to higher education. Historical Society meeting to have medical program The Poland Historical Society will meet on Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. There will be a “Civil War Medicine” program beginning at 7:30 p.m. Cassie Nespor from The Melnick Medical Museum of YSU will provide a slide show presentation on Civil War Medicine and the advances in medicine that happened due to the War. There will be displays of artifacts from that time period, including an amputation kit, anesthesia equipment and lancets.

NSS Life to meet Feb. 14 Region 7 of the National Slovak Society (NSS Life) will meet on Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Poland Christian Church, located at 6248 Struthers Road in Lowellville. The purpose of the meeting will be to nominate and elect region officers and to plan region activities for the new year. Immediately following the Region meeting, NSS Life’s Assembly 731 members will meet to elect officers to serve the qssembly and to plan fraternal activities for 2016. All members are encouraged to attend to meet and greet other members.

Rotary raises money through horse races By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Poland Rotary Club hosted its fifth annual Night at the Races fundraiser on Jan. 29 at the Holy Family Parish Center. The Night at the Races fundraiser always takes place the weekend before the Superbowl and is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Poland Rotary. Money is raised through the Poland Rotary, a local service organization, and then the money is provided to local charities. “It’s gotten bigger, we are expecting around 350-400 people here tonight,” said Dan Dull, a member of Poland Rotary. The Poland Rotary partners with several local businesses to help the Night at the Races come together. Many local shops donated food or gave the Poland Rotary a discount for the event. Poland Rotary raised money by selling entry tickets, which are all-inclusive, raffle tickets for the bigger prizes and a horse race in which people can bid on different horses. “We used to do a more for-

the Poland Rotary and other local charities. The auction race, led by Dull who is an auctioneer, is where the guests bid on the race horses. Most of the time a table will bid together and the total amount of money raised is split in half.

One half goes to the winner or winners and the other half goes to the Poland Rotary. Dull said the amount raised for the horse races is usually around $2,000. The next event hosted by the Poland Rotary will be the Chili Open Golf Classic on March 5.

On Jan. 23, students from the Poland Seminary High School Band performed at the OMEA District V Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event at Warren Harding High School. PSHS had a total of 39 events (36 solos and three small ensembles). All performances were rated on a scale of 1-5, with 1 being the highest. All Poland students received a rating of 2 or better, and 29 out of 39 received the highest possible rating. GA to meet Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. Two fundraiser to take place for American Cancer Society The Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee will be hosting two events in April benefiting the American Cancer Society. On April 13, a golf clinic will take place at Creekside Golf Dome in Girard from 6:30–8:30 p.m. Participants will receive instruction and practice in driving, chipping and putting. The Boy Scouts worked on First Aid, knot tying, fire building, identifying plants and different animals furs, antlers and skulls, and map reading. “Klondike has been around since as long as Boy Scouts has been around,” said Camp Ranger, Nathan Plesea. The Klondike Derby helped several Boy Scouts work on ad-

vancing their skills while also learning tips and tricks from other scouts. All of Camp Stambaugh was utilized by the Boy Scouts and the various skill areas that were set up around camp. The boys set up their tents on Camp Akela, while the other activities took place either inside cabins or on other outdoor areas of Stambaugh. Camp Stambaugh consists of about 400 total acres of land and is the location of several other Boy Scout events. Each Boy Scout troop demon-

strated their skills for the troop leader and at the end of the day, the Boy Scouts were graded on their performance. Those scouts who score the highest received an award. The troops made go-karts to race, but because there was no snow, they couldn’t race the cars. However, with some rain and wind, abilities were put to the test of how well the boys could complete the tasks in uncooperative weather. The Klondike Derby takes place annually for Boy Scouts. Fellows Riverside Gardens welcomed chef David Armstrong on Jan. 19 to teach a cooking class. Armstrong led the class in a demonstration on how to make different types of soups and which wines and sides to pair them with. Armstrong is the owner and chef of Cater 2 U, a Youngstown restaurant that specializes in catering. He has been to Fellows Riverside Gardens on several other previous occasions teaching classes and participating in other culinary events. “I was trying to think of things that we can do. We have one of doing a lot of ingredients, we have a middle one and the easiest one will be the split pea with a little twist to it,” said Armstrong. The guests learned how to make three different soups and

then had the opportunity to try all of them at the end of the class. There was a wild rice, chicken and mushroom soup, a sirloin chili soup and a split pea soup. All of the soups were made before the guests arrived because the class wasn’t long enough to make each soup. Armstrong had sides set on the table in the other room where the guests could eat. There were croutons, Fritos and other small snacks that paired with the soup. There was also a selection of wine and other drinks that complimented the soup, as well. “It’s not a hands-on class because we can’t do that here. I feel like most of the people come to be entertained by me,” said Armstrong. Guests were able to enjoy a night of learning how to prepare new dishes, especially ones that warm you up in the cold weather, and then eat some soup afterward.
