This Feb. 27 marks the 46th annual Canfield Band Parents Pasta Dinner and Chinese auction at the Canfield High School – one of the longest continual school fundraisers in the Valley. Back in the early ‘70s, the pasta dinner began as a roast beef and mashed potato fundraiser. Through the years, with t hree generations of band families passing through the high school, it has grown into a pasta dinner with a large Chinese auction. The current dinner serves approximately 1,600 people and the auction features approximately 100 quality baskets form generous area merchants. “The quality of the donations speaks volumes about t he va lue loca l merchants place on a solid music education” remarked Steve Hlaudy, the new Chinese Auction chairperson. “We enjoy having a wonderful mix of luxury, unique and sought after baskets – it’s really a lot of fun.” Cathy Miasek is heading up the pasta dinner for this year. “I’v e enjoy e d i nt er a c ting with our 100 plus parent volunteers, as well as the local merchants who support the food end of the day. We could not put out such a terrific meal for the community without everyone’s support,” she said.

Fun-filled activities for seniors By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Every third and fourth Thursday of the month, Boardman Park hosts a Senior Fun Day at the Lariccia Family Community Center. The first Senior Fun Day of 2016 occurred on Jan. 21. The event is three hours long and consists of different activities for those who come to enjoy. There is a fee of only $1 and with that there is lunch, a craft, exercise, a blood pressure screening and Bingo. Boardman Park and Senior Independence are in partnership for this event and those who sponsor it are Sunrise Assisted Living, the Blackburn Home and Shepherd of the Valley. There are usually around 70 seniors who attend and come spring, more people will come
out to enjoy the nicer weather. Many people that attend are regulars and come as often as they can. A lot of the seniors also come with a group of their friends. Having senior fun day gives people the opportunity to get out and socialize with their friends who they may not see often, while also meeting new people. One of the favorite parts of the day is Bingo. There are three to four games that are played, and they play until there are at least three winners per game. “It’s a lot of fun for seniors to get out and not have Winter blues, and enjoy a couples hours at the park and out with their friends,” said Boardman Park recreation director, Karen McCallum.

There were croutons, Fr itos a nd other small snacks that paired with the soup. There was also a selection of wine and other drinks that complimented the soup, as well.
“It’s not a hands-on class because we can’t do that here. I feel like most of the people come to be entertained by me,” said Armstrong. Guests were able to enjoy a night of learning how to prepare new dishes, especially ones that warm you up in the cold weather, and then eat some soup afterward.

The boys set up their tents on Camp Akela, while the other activities took place either inside cabins or on other outdoor areas of Stambaugh. Camp Stambaugh consists of about 400 total acres of land and is the location of several other Boy Scout events. Each Boy Scout troop demonstrated their skills for the troop leader and at the end of the day, the Boy Scouts were graded on their performance. Those scouts who score the highest received an award. The troops made go-karts to race, but because there was no snow, they couldn’t race the cars. However, with some rain and wind, abilities were put to the test of how well the boys could complete the tasks in uncooperative weather. The Klondike Derby takes place annually for Boy Scouts.

Don’t let PAD catch you by surprise. Do you suffer from leg pain while walking or lying down? Have you noticed discoloration or wounds on your feet or legs? These could be signs of blocked blood flow, also known as peripheral artery disease (PAD). About one in every 20 Americans over the age of 50 has PAD*. While smoking and/or diabetes are the main risk factors, those that suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease are also at risk. If left untreated, you could develop serious health problems, such as a heart attack or stroke. Join Vascular Surgeon Michael Cicchillo, M.D., at a free event to learn more about how PAD is diagnosed and the treatment options available.
