Teens and tweens create tie dye pillowcases By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Poland library hosted an event for tweens and teens to come in and tie dye their own pillowcase on Jan. 27. Poland librarians Amanda Kollar and Annette A hrens led the event and taught the children how to tie dye. Each person was given a white pillowcase, gloves and rubber bands to work with. There were several different colored dyes and various designs to choose from. “We’ve never actually really tie dyed ever. This is our first attempt at it,” said Ahrens. There were people who have tie dyed before, while for some this was their first time doing it. The tie dye kit the Poland library used came with rubber bands, the dye and even a tablecloth to cover the table with to prevent a mess. Kollar had tie dyed a pillowcase previously to give everyone an idea of what the project look like. Before the children started, Kollar explained the processes and told them to pick out the design and colors before they started dying. Sydney Metzinger attended the tie dye event with her

friend and neighbor, Evalyn Hunneyman. The two girls said they had fun making their own colorful pillowcases. Hunneyman has tie dyed once before, but this

was the first time for Metzinger. “I like that you just kind of make a mess,” said Metzinger with a laugh. When the children finished their creations, there were

snacks available for them to eat after. They could either bring their pillowcases home with them to finish, or leave them at the library for Kollar and Ahrens to finish for them.

Sprout Club investigates world of spices By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted its monthly Sprout Club event on Jan. 21. The theme of this month’s Sprout Club was spices. Mandy Smith, a horticulture education manager, led the class through a variety of activities dealing with different spices. The children were able to smell, taste, touch and look at six types of spices, including cloves, turmeric, cinnamon, dill, paprika and oregano. “We’re going to do a little game. We are going to investigate six different spices and then we are going to paint with spices,” said Smith. The children were handed a piece of paper with several blank squares next to each spice. The

children would put a happy or sad face if they liked or did not like the smell and they would also write where the spice came from. They could pick if it came from a leaf, a flower, a rhizone, which is a root, bark or a fruit. After everyone filled out their sheet, Smith passed out three different spices mixed with white acrylic paint for the children to make pictures with. One of the children, Trini, named the painting of a cat “Paprika” because that is the spice she used. The children each painted two pictures and then enjoyed a snack. They could choose from raisins, gingersnap cookies, cinnamon cookies, carrots, pretzels and hummus with different spices to add to it. This allowed the children to taste the spices they learned about during Sprout Club.

Don’t let PAD catch you by surprise. Do you suffer from leg pain while walking or lying down? Have you noticed discoloration or wounds on your feet or legs? These could be signs of blocked blood flow, also known as peripheral artery disease (PAD). About one in every 20 Americans over the age of 50 has PAD*. While smoking and/or diabetes are the main risk factors, those that suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease are also at risk. If left untreated, you could develop serious health problems, such as a heart attack or stroke. Join Vascular Surgeon Michael Cicchillo, M.D., at a free event to learn more about how PAD is diagnosed and the treatment options available.
