Students at St. Christine got up to dance along with Katy Collins during her performance on Jan. 31.
Katy Collins received a warm welcome f rom her for mer school, St. Christine’s, on Jan. 31 when she came back to perform for the students and staff. Collins has always been into music and performing and was in choir during her time at school. She started performing with Easy Street Productions and participated in the productions that were put on at St. Christine’s. Collins worked on teaching herself guitar while she was in middle school and then began writing her own music when she got to high school. While in college, Collins thought more about pursuing a career in music and once she graduated she moved to Nashville to work on making that happen. She went to conventions and began networking as she wrote her own music and trying to find her place. See COLLINS, Page 4

Children become young geologists By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children studied up on how rocks helped shape the Mahoning Valley during a Geology Rocks program at Ford Nature Center on Feb. 4. Geology Rocks: Engineering Our Earth was a program that
gave children the opportunity to learn about various types of rocks, play games and make a craft to take home. The program started out by children picking out two rocks that were on display. The children sat at two tables and were then asked to use the rocks they picked out and put them into similar groups.
The children then brought up a few rocks to a projector so everyone was able to see the details of the rocks on a larger screen. The children were told what kind of rocks they were looking at and where they could be found. See ROCKS, Page 6

ROCKS
Continued from Page 5
After the children learned about the different kinds of rocks, they played a game. They stood in a circle and would have to do a special move to show a certain type of rock is formed when the rock name was called aloud. This activity allowed the children to have fun while learning. To finish off class, the children made sand art. They could pick from a mini mason jar or a shaped container and a bracelet and fill it with different colored sand to create their own art. Ford Nature Center hosts a nature program like this once a month to educate children while allowing them to participate in fun and engaging activities. Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci

Superintendent gains insight and feedback from students On Jan. 25, 15 student representatives from Austintown Inter med iate, Midd le a nd Fitch High School were invited to a special student leadership luncheon at the Board of Education Office. The invitation came from Superintendent, Vincent Colaluca in an effort to gain a student’s perspective on various topics
involving the the district. “I rea l ly enjoyed hav i ng lunch with the students and learning about their ideas for the district. We had some great, productive conversations during our meeting. These students represented their buildings and our district well,” Colaluca said. One piece in the district’s
strategic plan, Falcon Focus 2020, is to have meetings (like this one) with student leadership groups to listen to what they would like to see in the district. Cola luca hopes to make this luncheon an annual gathering. “I look forward to inviting students to do this again next school year,” he said.

Children make a furry friend By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children hopped their way to Bears Den Cabin on Feb. 10 to learn about Eastern Cottontails and meet a special guest. The program was open to children ages 2-3 years-old. Marilyn Williams, a naturalist at Ford Nature Center, helped lead the program and teach the children about Eastern Cotton-
tail rabbits. As the children and their caregivers were coming in, they were given a name tag shaped like a rabbit and a color page to color while they waited to start. When everyone got there, the children listened to a couple books about Eastern Cottontails before going outside. The snowy day allowed the children to go outside and look
for rabbit tracks as they tried to look for rabbits hidden around the open yard. The children made their own tracks in the snow by hopping around like a rabbit. After the children found some of the hidden rabbits, they went back inside to make their own rabbit craft to take home. They decorated a rabbit cut out of construction paper with paint, tissue paper and cotton
balls to make the snow. At the end of the program, Olaf, a lionhead rabbit was brought out for the children to look at and pet. The children lined up ready to pet Olaf and feel how soft and fluffy he was. Many of the parents enjoy bringing their children to learn about different things in nature while being able to spend time with them.
