History comes to life at fashion show By NATALIE WRIGHT nscott@vindy.com

American Girl has officially been a part of our lives for 30 years this year. Pleasant T. Rowland, former teacher and publisher of educational items, formed the company (then called the Pleasant Company) in 1986 and it distributed its first catalogue that same year. Since then, American Girl has been a part of many young girls’ lives. I grew up with American Girl. My sister and I loved to pore over the magazines and catalogues that would come WRIGHT to our house or school librar y once a month. We never owned one of those incredible dolls, but our mother made sure that we had access to all of the books we wanted and the tales of the American Girl characters would fill us with adventure, mystery, hijacks and a good dose of history. Our favorite at the time was Molly, who has since been discontinued, with Samantha coming in a close second. Now that I’m older, I have to confess that I have a soft spot for Kit, who wants to be a journalist when she grows up – I bet you can imagine why.

For the past three years, I have been lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to share my love for this incredible company with other young ladies and their American Girl dolls by being a hostess at the American Girl Fashion Show, this year taking place March 5 and 6. The Vindicator and WFMJ have been sponsors of this wonderful fundraising event in the Mahoning Valley for nearly a decade, which allowed them to help the Angels of Easter Seals in the past and more recently Akron Children’s Hospital. The event offers excited local young ladies the opportunity to walk the catwalk in fashions throughout the years while helping out a worthy cause. Other girls in the community have the chance to win an American Girl doll through an essay contest or by calling in to enter a drawing. Tickets will be on sale through March 2 at the cost of $30 each and can be purchased online at www.akronchildrens.org/ americangirlfashionshow. Ticket prices include a luncheon and admittance to the fashion show. For those of you planning to attend, look for me – and all of our other amazing hostesses – at the fashion show. Say “hi” to us and share some of your favorite American Girl stories with us. We can’t wait to see you there!

The Boardman library celebrated the Super Bowl a day early on Feb. 6 with snacks, Madden and various other football related activities. Boardman librarian Allison Graff helped put the event together for teens to participate in. She set up the Madden football video game for Xbox and chips, cookies, drinks and pizza for everyone to eat. A Super Bowl prediction sheet was also on hand

for the teens to fill out, including such guesses as who would win, what the score would be, what color Gatorade would be dumped on the coach and other aspects of the game. Timmy Case, one of the boys who attended the event, said he goes to a lot of the library programs the other libraries in Mahoning County. “I come to the library a whole lot, even to events where no one is likely to be here,” said Case. Between Case and his little sister, his family goes to the li-

brary very often to participate in the different programs that each library has to offer. Case said he likes to go to the library more for the events rather than for the books to check out. “Pretty much all football events are my favorite, I love football,” said Case. Spending time at the Boardman library for this event was a great way to prepare for the real Super Bowl the next day. The guests could root for their favorite team while enjoying the company of other sports fans.

St. Charles School continued their Catholic School Week on Feb. 2 with help from the nonprofit organization Making Kids Count. The students in fifththrough eighth-grade had the opportunity to make blankets and write cheerful notes for children in need. Shelly Marlowe, cofounder of Making Kids Count, spoke to the students at St. Charles about Making Kids Count. Marlowe also brought two others who work with Making Kids Count,

her sister-in-law, Colleen Eisenbraun, and her cousin, Jana Coffin. “The program they are helping us with today are the Making Kids Count comfort kits. These are duffle bags filled with everyday items that kids would need if they were being removed from their homes and placed into foster care,” said Marlowe. After Marlowe, Eisenbraun and Coffin spoke to the students about Making Kids Count, they started to explain the instructions on how the blankets were going to be made. A blanket was used as a demonstration so the

Children dig into the life of a groundhog at Ford Nature Center By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Once per month, Ford Nature Center hosts a program for ch i ld ren about nat u re and the different animals in it. This month, the children learned about groundhogs on Feb. 5, just a few days after Groundhog’s Day. Hillary Lenton, Mill Creek Park natura list, taught the children a ll about groundhogs and their lifestyle. Lenton went over the different names for groundhogs, such as whistlepigs, groundhogs and woodchucks. Groundhogs got the name whistlepig because they whistle to each other to show signs of danger. The activ it y the children participated in this month was tunnel crawling. Lenton set up two tunnels for the children to crawl through like groundhogs would do in their tunnels

they dig. Several of the children returned to the tunnels to play in after the program was over. “The children were crawling through the tunnels,” said Lenton. “The groundhogs dig their holes in the ground, they dig tunnels and move about 700 pounds of dirt and rocks in a day.” To end t he prog ra m, t he children made little groundhogs on a stick to pop up from a sma l l c up w h ich represented the groundhog’s hole. W hen the children finished putting their craft together, Lenton whistled to show there was danger and the children popped their groundhogs in and out of their holes. The next program will be about owls and will take place on March 10 at Pioneer Pavillion. Mill Creek Parks will also be celebrating their 125th anniversary in April.

Robinwood Lane Elementary was filled with Valentine’s Day spirit on Feb. 11. Classes all around the building had Valentine’s Day parties before the long weekend. Each class celebrated Valentine’s Day their own way. Some classes had ice cream sundaes,

while others had cookies. All of the students brought in Valentine’s boxes they made to hold their valentine treats in. Jan Zorman’s fourth-grade class had a lot to do during their party. They decorated their own cookies, made ice cream sundaes, ate treats and passed out Valentines to each other. “This is their valentine party and these are my moms. They
