An Eagle Scout is the highest advancement rank in Boy Scouts and a Canfield student has earned this distinction. Zachary Ryan Gierlach, a senior, had his Court of Honor last month. Gierlach is part of Boy Scout Troop 115 in Canfield, a division of the Greater Western Reserve Council. Gierlach is active at Canfield Presbyterian Church where he is currently a youth Elder. Gierlach planned The Peace Walk, a project that aims to beautify the community and provide a place to walk, relax and learn about nature. Upon graduation, he plans to continue his education and become a history teacher.

History comes to life at fashion show By NATALIE WRIGHT nscott@vindy.com

American Girl has officially been a part of our lives for 30 years this year. Pleasant T. Rowland, former teacher and publisher of educational items, formed the company (then called the Pleasant Company) in 1986 and it distributed its first catalogue that same year. Since then, American Girl has been a part of many young girls’ lives. I grew up with American Girl. My sister and I loved to pore over the magazines and catalogues that would come WRIGHT to our house or school librar y once a month. We never owned one of those incredible dolls, but our mother made sure that we had access to all of the books we wanted and the tales of the American Girl characters would fill us with adventure, mystery, hijacks and a good dose of history. Our favorite at the time was Molly, who has since been discontinued, with Samantha coming in a close second. Now that I’m older, I have to confess that I have a soft spot for Kit, who wants to be a journalist when she grows up – I bet you can imagine why.

For the past three years, I have been lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to share my love for this incredible company with other young ladies and their American Girl dolls by being a hostess at the American Girl Fashion Show, this year taking place March 5 and 6. The Vindicator and WFMJ have been sponsors of this wonderful fundraising event in the Mahoning Valley for nearly a decade, which allowed them to help the Angels of Easter Seals in the past and more recently Akron Children’s Hospital. The event offers excited local young ladies the opportunity to walk the catwalk in fashions throughout the years while helping out a worthy cause. Other girls in the community have the chance to win an American Girl doll through an essay contest or by calling in to enter a drawing. Tickets will be on sale through March 2 at the cost of $30 each and can be purchased online at www.akronchildrens.org/ americangirlfashionshow. Ticket prices include a luncheon and admittance to the fashion show. For those of you planning to attend, look for me – and all of our other amazing hostesses – at the fashion show. The Canfield Lions will host a Fish Fry on March 4 at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. The cost is $11. Dinner will run from 4:30-7:30 p.m. and the main course will be haddock (baked or fried), choice of one side of french fries, Pierogis, macaroni and cheese or Haluski. This includes cole slaw or green beans, roll, drink and dessert.

Gathering Place to meet on March 14 There will be a Gathering Place event at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on March 14 at 11 a.m. The program will feature Jim Loboy and lunch will be provided by the Woodlands. This is a free community outreach program open to all senior citizens. It takes place on the second Monday of every month and different games and activities are offered each month.

Drive through dinner to be March 3 Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield is having a drive through chicken dinner on March 3 from 4 p.m. until it is sold out. The cost is $8 and the menu includes stuffed chicken breasts, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and brownie.

Canfield student named to Baldwin Wallace University’s Deans List Local student Nicholas Percich has been named to the Dean’s List for the Fall Semester 2015 at Baldwin Wallace University. Canfield High School choir students welcomed family and friends to “the happiest place on Earth” as they presented their Disney Spectacular on Jan. 30. Under the direction of Kelly Scurich, student members of the Concert Choir, Chamber Ensemble and One Octave Higher Ensemble performed medleys from several classic Disney movies, including “The Little Mermaid,” “The Lion King” and “Frozen.” The choirs opened the show with Disney Spectacular Part One, which started with “Zip-ADee-Doo-Dah,” “How D’Ye Do and Shake Hands,” “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo,” “I’ve Got No Strings,” “Feed the Birds,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee,” “Step in Time,” “A Spoonful of Sugar” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” The students continued with selections from “The Little Mermaid,” including “Fathoms Below,” “Part of Your World,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Under the Sea.” Next, the students performed selections from “The Lion King,” including “Circle of Life,” “I Just Can’t Wait to be King,” “Hakuna Matata” and “Can You Feel the

sure the success of the event. “This is the fourth year of our tasting event. This year the tasting sold out, and was even over sold. We have 15 food vendors here tonight, with about half being repeats. We very much appreciate their support of our program and couldn’t do this without them,” said Mary Vallas, Canfield Choral Boosters treasurer and chairperson of the Disney Spectacular. The event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the choirs. Proceeds from the evening go toward choir expenses, such as payment for accompanists, competitions, upkeep of robes and tuning pianos.

Sprout Club investigates world of spices By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted its monthly Sprout Club event on Jan. 21. The theme of this month’s Sprout Club was spices. Mandy Smith, a horticulture education manager, led the class through a variety of activities dealing with different spices. The children were able to smell, taste, touch and look at six types of spices, including cloves, turmeric, cinnamon, dill, paprika and oregano.

“We’re going to do a little game. We are going to investigate six different spices and then we are going to paint with spices,” said Smith. The children were handed a piece of paper with several blank squares next to each spice. The children would put a happy or sad face if they liked or did not like the smell and they would also write where the spice came from. They could pick if it came from a leaf, a flower, a rhizone, which is a root, bark or a fruit. After everyone filled out their sheet, Smith passed out three

different spices mixed with white acrylic paint for the children to make pictures with. One of the children, Trini, named the painting of a cat “Paprika” because that is the spice she used. The children each painted two pictures and then enjoyed a snack. They could choose from raisins, gingersnap cookies, cinnamon cookies, carrots, pretzels and hummus with different spices to add to it. This allowed the children to taste the spices they learned about during Sprout Club.

Sunny weather makes Cub Scout Freeze Out bearable By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Camp Stambaugh was the home to the annual Whispering Pines District Cub Scout Freeze Out on Jan. 29 and 30. A morning and afternoon session were available for the Cub Scouts and their parents to work on character building skills and also learn outdoor skills. “We are trying to get them outdoors, having fun in the fresh air and sunshine. We’ve built a program to incorporate a spectrum of physical activity and scout craft and scouting skills to help prepare them for their path in scouting, but also to help make them better citizens in general,” said Steph Kelly, the event coordinator. The Cub Scouts worked on different skills like knife-handling, physical fitness and first aid. Having the Cub Scouts work on their outdoor skills at a young age allows them to further advance when they are eligible to become a Boy Scout. “The Freeze Out has been going on well over 20 years, easily, it’s just been a standard activities the district has hosted,” said Jason Wolf, the executive director of Boy Scouts Greater Western Reserve Council.

There are themes to the Freeze Outs every year and this year’s theme was Star Wars. Each activity was named after a Star Wars subject and the different groups the Cub Scouts were put into were named after different Star Wars characters. The Cub Scouts learned from the “Jedi’s,” the Scout leaders, and “Jedi Masters,” the parents or adult partners. Some of the adults didn’t have the scout training like others, so they learned along with the Cub Scouts. “In our Freeze Out we really

focus on this being a family activity in Cub Scouts. We have 135 boys and 99 parents or adult partners with our boys today,” said Kelly. The morning and afternoon session both began and ended with a flag ceremony and a bugler. There are several other events that the Cub Scouts participate in throughout the year to work on advancing their scouting skills. The events are a fun way to learn while being able to spend time with their friends Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci and family. The new Canfield library is complete and was opened to the public for a soft opening on Jan. 25. A formal grand opening and dedication took place on Jan. 30, with refreshments and activities for all ages. “We’re very happy that our customers who have waited so long for their new library will finally be able to come inside and use all of the wonderful resources the Canfield library has to offer,” said Library Executive Director Heidi M. Daniel. The library offers an Early Learning Area, along with an expanded children’s section. The Early Learning Area is a play area which focuses on fine motor skills with each station prominently displaying a verb. The purpose is to promote literary skills while the children are playing and to raise print awareness. “Children up to 5-years-old benefit from a print-rich environment. Children learn while they play. Our Early Learning Area is designed with a learning outcome in mind,” Daniel said. The library also has public access terminals and small meeting rooms, which are sound proof, and can be reserved for adults who are looking for a quiet space. A teen room is also available with large flat screens and Chrome books. “Teens can use this room as a study room and as a place where they can work together and interact together,” Daniel said. A large meeting room is also a part of the new library. This

room will be used for story time and any other special activities. “The floor in there is rubber, so when we have craft activities, or any messy activities, it will make for an easy clean up,” Daniel said. An even larger meeting room, which seats 145 in a lecture format or 130 with tables and chairs, is available for rental with a fee. An outside space is also available for library meetings or programs, including story times. A co-working table will also be featured at the library to provide technological assistance. “We are waiting on our coworking table, and are very much looking forward to our customers being able to utilize it together,” Daniel said. Stone Fruit Coffee Company has opened a branch in the library and will be serving specialty coffee drinks. Plans have been in the works for nearly a decade for this new Canfield library and the Library Board of Trustees has been saving money for this $5.3 million project. The library operates debt-free and pays for projects with our bond issues or loans, which are costly. Private donations of more than $600,000 from the community helped offset the cost of constructing this new library branch. The old Canfield library, built in 1969, was 5,104 square feet. The new branch is 18,514 square feet. The Canfield library will be open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Sunday hours begin in February and will

be 1-5 p.m. through May 22. “We are very excited for the Canfield community to come in and see what we have for them. Canfield has been waiting a long time for their library to be completed,” Daniel said. The architect was Ronald Cornell of Faniro Architects, Inc., of Youngstown; general contractor was Hudson Construction, Inc., of Hermitage, Pa.; plumbing trades were provided by Morrone Mechanical of Lowellville; mechanical trades were provided by York Mahoning MC, Inc; Neighbors | Abby Slanker fire protection trades were provided by RNL Fire Systems and Canfield Village Middle School student Hailey Tomory and her mom, Brandy, electrical trades were provided checked out the new library, including looking up book titles online, during the Grand Opening and Dedication of the new Canfield library on Jan. 30. by Tri-Area Electric.

Elias named Young Women with Bright Future nominee Canfield High School senior Mackenzie Elias is a YWCA 2016 Young Women with Bright Futures Award nominee. Students and staff at Canfield High School went all out to get fired up for the rivalry basketball game versus Poland during Spirit Week Jan. 25-29. Prior to the beginning of the week, a number of students and staff made signs and decorated their respective hallways in their class color to show their school spirit. Each day had a theme, which encouraged the students to show their spirit. Monday was “Twin Day,” during which students dressed alike in pairs or groups; Tuesday was “Class Color Day,” during which Freshmen dressed in yellow,

sophomores in green, juniors in white, seniors in black and staff in red; Wednesday was “Class Themes Day” with the freshmen theme being “Round ‘em Up,” sophomores theme was “Put ‘em to Sleep,” juniors theme was “Military” and the staff theme was “Cardinal Staff Got Game;” Thursday’s all school theme was “Cardinals Are Out of This World,” during which students were encouraged to incorporate aliens, outer space, “Star Wars,” etc. into their outfits and Friday was “Red and Black Day.” In addition to the school spirit, Spirit Week was also a competition between each class and also the staff. Each day, students were awarded points for participation

and points were tracked and the winning group would be announced at the end of the week, with bragging rights as the prize. “I can feel the energy level of the students and the staff and it is just an amazing feeling. Each class did an awesome job decorating their hallway... there are so many signs, you can barely see the walls. The staff decorated the athletic foyer and they did as great a job as the kids and really put their hearts into it,” said Jacci Duda, Canfield High School guidance secretary. At the end of the day Friday, a whole school Pep Rally took place to get everyone fired up for the varsity basketball game against Poland that evening.

As the senior players were announced, their parents walked them through a double line of their teammates after Head Coach Matt Reel greeted them. As part of the celebration before the game began, the four senior girls led their team through a hoop banner, which recognized the seniors. The Canfield Basketball Booster organization offered a reception outside the gymnasium following the varsity team’s victory of 58-19 over Ashtabula Lakeside for the families and teammates of the four senior team members. The parents of the other Canfield team players decorated the reception area to honor their senior players.
