History comes to life at fashion show By NATALIE WRIGHT nscott@vindy.com

American Girl has officially been a part of our lives for 30 years this year. Pleasant T. Rowland, former teacher and publisher of educational items, formed the company (then called the Pleasant Company) in 1986 and it distributed its first catalogue that same year. Since then, American Girl has been a part of many young girls’ lives. I grew up with American Girl. My sister and I loved to pore over the magazines and catalogues that would come WRIGHT to our house or school librar y once a month. We never owned one of those incredible dolls, but our mother made sure that we had access to all of the books we wanted and the tales of the American Girl characters would fill us with adventure, mystery, hijacks and a good dose of history. Our favorite at the time was Molly, who has since been discontinued, with Samantha coming in a close second. Now that I’m older, I have to confess that I have a soft spot for Kit, who wants to be a journalist when she grows up – I bet you can imagine why.

For the past three years, I have been lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to share my love for this incredible company with other young ladies and their American Girl dolls by being a hostess at the American Girl Fashion Show, this year taking place March 5 and 6. The Vindicator and WFMJ have been sponsors of this wonderful fundraising event in the Mahoning Valley for nearly a decade, which allowed them to help the Angels of Easter Seals in the past and more recently Akron Children’s Hospital. The event offers excited local young ladies the opportunity to walk the catwalk in fashions throughout the years while helping out a worthy cause. Other girls in the community have the chance to win an American Girl doll through an essay contest or by calling in to enter a drawing. Tickets will be on sale through March 2 at the cost of $30 each and can be purchased online at www.akronchildrens.org/ americangirlfashionshow. Ticket prices include a luncheon and admittance to the fashion show. For those of you planning to attend, look for me – and all of our other amazing hostesses – at the fashion show. Say “hi” to us and share some of your favorite American Girl stories with us. We can’t wait to see you there!

Dobbins third-graders welcome woolly animals By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Students at Poland Dobbins learned about different woolly animals on Feb. 5 from Kim Muff of Mill Creek Metroparks Farm. The third-grade students in Marlene Booher’s learned from Muff about the different animals that produce wool and how the wool is produced into materia l to ma ke sweaters and other objects from. Muff set up a tri-fold cardboard display with several pictures and information about wool and the different ways to clean and turn wool into yarn. Some of the animals displayed were sheep, la mbs, ewes, rams, alpacas, angora rabbits, goats and llamas. Muff talked about the fact that the sheep are sheared during the spring because their wool is like their coat and keeps them warm during the winter. There are multiple ways to shear a sheep and some people can do it in a short amount of time. Muff also brought it a pair of shears to show the students. Muff talked about cleaning

the wool and the by-product, called lanolin, that comes from it. The wool is washed with hot water and that is when dye is added to turn it different colors. “You would put in the dye when it’s hot because that is when it is going to sink into the fiber. You can have the different

colors, you can have hot pink, you can have green,” said Muff. The students had the opportunity to be hands on and feel the brushes that Muff brought it. The brushes are used to brush out the wool and are rough, so the students could only hold the wooden handles.

Muff ended her lesson with an activity for the students that focused on one of the processes she discussed. They used paper and yarn to make their own loom to weave the yarn. When the children finished their weaving, they ended up with a sheep.

One hundred days learning celebrated By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The third grade students of Poland Dobbins Elementary celebrated their 100th day of school on Feb. 4 with 100 piece puzzles. All of the third-grade classes had the opportunity to spend time with their friends from other classes during the 100th day of school. Ha l f of t he t h i rd-g r ade classes celebrated their 100th day in the morning while the other half celebrated in the afternoon. The students used the librar y and t he cafeteria to piece their puzzles together. A few students would form their own group to work on a puzzle together. The puzzles picked out were 100 pieces to celebrate the 100th day. The 100th day of school is usually celebrated later in the year at Dobbins due to snow days prolonging the event. This year there weren’t any snow days, which allowed the children to celebrate earlier in the year than normal. Having a landmark day in the school year to celebrate got the students excited. They were able to take a break from their regular class schedule to celebrate being in school for 100 days.

Joe Sepesy spoke to the guests about his personal life and how ballroom dancing has affected his life in a positive way.

Veteran discovers new life through dancing By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Poland library hosted an event on Jan. 29 called the Benefits of Ballroom Dancing. Guest speaker Joe Sepesy came to the library to talk about how ballroom dancing has helped change his life for the better. Sepesy, a retired veteran, told guests the story of how he came to be the ballroom dancing person he is today. He discussed his personal story and told participants that he has always been a musical person. The time he spent as a helicopter pilot during his three combat tours of duty in Vietnam took a larger toll on him than one can imag-

ine. Sepesy has gone through several injuries, both physically and mentally. 2009 was one of the most monumental years in Sepesy’s life. After going through multiple surgeries and therapy sessions, Sepesy and his therapy group were told by their therapist to try three things that they normally wouldn’t do. This moment is when Sepesy decided to write his Vietnam memoir, play his Gibson guitar and learn ballroom dance. After taking the first few classes and getting over his fear, Sepesy has grown to love ballroom dancing. He has performed nearly 20 times to hundreds of people and took private lessons

twice a week. Six years later he is currently helping his instructor, Lynda McPhail, teach group classes and is dancing five or six times a week. “I can’t say enough about her dedication and desire to help not only me, but all of her students,” said Sepesy about McPhail. Dancing has helped Sepesy in many ways. He no longer wears a leg brace, he’s lost weight and kept it off, and it gave him a new outlook on life. He has published two books, “Word Dances” and “Word Dances 2: It’s Your Time to Dance,” and finished his Vietnam memoir, “Once We Flew.” “Life is now good,” said Sepesy. “The world of dancing has inspired me.”

Wars characters. The Cub Scouts learned from the “Jedi’s,” the Scout leaders, and “Jedi Masters,” the parents or adult partners. Some of the adults didn’t have the scout training like others, so they learned along with the Cub Scouts. “In our Freeze Out we really focus on this being a family activity in Cub Scouts. Children add new books to their collection By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Scholastic Book Fair made its way into Poland Union Elementary the week of Feb. 1-5. Students were eager to choose their favorites from a selection of many different books. A few special guests showed up throughout the week to read stories to the children in different classes. Stan Boney made an appearance at Sue Flasco’s first-grade class on Feb. 2. Boney read the books “Pete the Cat and his Magic Sunglasses” by James and Kimberly Dean and “Frog on a Log,” by Phil Roxbee Cox. The students gathered on the carpet around Boney to listen to him read the books. After the stories were finished, the stu-

dents had to chance to talk to Boney and ask him any questions they may have had. Afterward, the entire class made its way across the hall to the book fair. Each of the students had an envelope with money that they could use to buy books, bookmarks or any other items that were being sold at the book fair. “We will have had six classes by the time we leave, which is a little over 180 kids just today,” said Holly Kollar, the PTO cochair of the book fair. One volunteer, a mother to one of the students, said many students come in and are so energetic and excited to get new books. Some of the children will go up to the register with a stack of books they want to buy.
