Friendly Squares March square dance The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on March 9 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. All Inclusive Egg Hunt offered on April 7 Rulli Bros. Market, located at 8025 South Ave. in Boardman, will be the location for the second annual All Inclusive Egg Hunt. ABWA chapter to meet The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Associ-

ation) will host its March 12 meeting at Johnny’s Restaurant in Boardman. Spring Clinic set for March 6 The 2019 MVLNA Spring Clinic, set for March 6, has an extensive lineup of speakers and activities for your gardening needs. Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish will offer Lenten fish dinners at the Parish Center, located at 4500 Norquest Boulevard in Austintown, beginning on Ash Wednesday, March 6, and then will run every Friday through Good Friday, April 19. The menu includes fried or baked haddock, fried shrimp, coleslaw or applesauce, bread and butter, choice of two sides, assorted desserts and beverages. There is also a complimentary pasta and pizza table with the purchase of adult eat-in dinners, only. The cost is $11 for adult dinners and $6 for children under the age of 12. Evening of Comedy and Magic to be March 9 The Hopewell Theatre’s “An Evening of Comedy and Magic” is set for March 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20. This event stars local talent magician/comedian Eric Thompson and comedian Jenna Cintavey. Come enjoy this hilarious one-nightonly performance. Proceeds will go toward the accessibility project. The accessibility project, set to cost approximately $80,000, will include a handicap restroom, a new entryway equipped with an electric lift assist and new parking. Austintown band hosts annual Spaghetti Dinner

The Austintown Band Parents Association hosted its annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser on Feb. 23.

According to Association President Ray Hartsough the event has been a tradition that predates the high school building, which was built in 1969.

Hartsough said the fundraiser is the largest the band hosts every year, usually raising from $7,000-$10,000.

“The money that this event raises is one reason that the program is able to maintain it’s excellence from year to year,” Hartsough said.

During the event community members were able to purchase tickets to a spaghetti dinner, dessert and drinks.

The spaghetti sauce recipe is a heavily guarded secret, having been passed down between event chairmen each year since it began.

2019 Easter Alive program Redeemer Lutheran Church, in conjunction with Thrivent and Cabinwood’s Northend Acres, is sponsoring a program for children ages 3-12 on April 13, starting at 11 a.m. at the church, located at 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road (State Route 46 between New Road and Kirk Road).

The guest of honor and speaker was Ohio Lions District Governor from District 13-OH4, Mike Tyler, from the Willoughby Evening Lions Club. Tyler, in his remarks, invited all Lions and Lioness to the annual District Convention to take place March 15-17 at the McKinley Grand Hotel in Canton. He also gave an update on the state of the district and praised the Austintown groups for their service. Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley recently celebrated completion of a new chapel at Mercy Health Humility House Senior Living, 755 Ohltown Road. This was made possible thanks to the generous families of two Humility House residents. The $10,000 renovation project includes a new alter, new wallcoverings, new carpet and new furnishings. It was completed in January and a blessing ceremony recently took place. Volunteers from the Austintown Band Parents association along with the high school kitchen staff prepared the food.

Bands from Austintown High School, Intermediate and Middle School perform for community members during the event, which ran from 12-7 p.m.

“We are very lucky to have support from all of the schools, all of the principals and band directors work hard for this event,” Hartsough said.

Along with dinner and music, the BPA organized a 50/50 raffle, a bake sale and a Chinese auction to help raise money for the band.

“Our volunteers are working hard non-stop and all day to pull this off,” Hartsough said. “It is a team effort.”

Members of the event com-

mittee have been meeting since November to prepare, according to 2019 chair Jen Agnone.

“There are about six of us and we met about once a month, updating each other on our individual tasks,” Agnone said.

Volunteers spend hours decorating the night before the event, Agnone said, and begin day of preparations around 6 a.m.

Ha r tsoug h sa id t hat t he money raised annually from the event allows the BPA to purchase crucial items, like uniforms and instruments, for students.

“It is truly amazing to see the great turnout year after year as the community comes out to support our students, and we so grateful for that support…

It is really a fun day,” said High School Band Director Wes O’Connor.

Librarian and artist Andrea Zupcsan ran the event, where she instructed community members on painting a silhouetted landscape.

Zupcsa n, who at tended Youngstown State University as an art minor, said that she gets many of her ideas from Pinterest, but often mixes and matches them.

She also looks at similar events, like Sip and Paint, which is offered at other library’s nationally, for inspiration.

Youngstown Foundation grant gets Hopewell closer to being handicapped accessible

The Youngstow n Foundat ion recent ly awa rded $20,000 toward the Hopewell Theatre’s goal of becoming handicap accessible.

The total project will cost approximately $80,000 and will include a handicap rest room, a new ent r y way equipped with an electric lift assist and new parking.

“The Youngstown Foundation is proud to award this grant to the Hopewell Theatre,” said Jan Strasfeld, Youngstown Foundation Ex-

ecutive Director. “The Foundation exists to support endeavors that improve quality of life for our residents. Access to the arts is certainly in line with that purpose.”

Two years ago, Hopewell (then the Victorian Players) kicked off their accessibility project campaign to fund renovations that ensure patrons with mobility challenges can access the facility.

“We still have a long way to go,” says Marlene Strollo, Hopewell Theatre Board President. “This

grant, along with other grants and fundraising, gets us about halfway to our goal.”

“The hard part is making it for everyone,” Zupscan said. “I do this kind of thing all the time at home, it’s my way of relaxing.”

This month, Zupscan taught community members how to create a gradient, going from yellow to red which created a sunset back ground.

Community members then painted trees in black, and a sun in white, which cemented the silhouetted look.

“Art is about repetition,” Zupscan said. “Sometimes you do the same thing three times and its not ‘til the third time that you like it.”

Along with teaching the class,

Zupscan painted an example at home for community members to look at as they work.

“Having an example helps because they see why they are making certain choices,” she said. “But it should not be something that they try to replicate exactly.”

Zupscan said that when ever she teaches the class, she hopes each participant puts their on unique touch on the art.

“There are no two painting that are the same, and there shouldn’t be. That’s the cool thing about art,” she said.

All supplies, including paints and canvases, were supplied by the library.

Nationally recognized speaker Stanley Leone visited Austintown Fitch High School on Feb. 14 to speak to teachers about how to better their relationships with students, and each other.

National speaker addresses Austintown teachers

The Austintown school district brought nationally renowned speak Stanley Leone to Fitch High School on Feb. 14.

Super Intendant Vincent Colaluca organized the speaking event using money from the Attorney General Office Safety Grant.

Colaluca said that the grant was worth $25,000, and was split between the speaker and mental health training for counselors.

“His [Leone’s] message transcends many different areas,” Colaluca said. “If you didn’t grow up in poverty, you don’t understand it.”

Leone addressed an auditorium of teachers from the district, including the principal team from each school.

Speaking for two hours, Leone addressed the issues of mental health wellness and trauma in students, and burn out in teaching staff.

“It is equally as important to tend to each other as it is to tend to your students,” Leone said.

To kick off the event, Leone had teachers break off into groups, battling each other in a rock-paper-scissors elimination tournament.

“We have fun, and it helps loosen the tension,” Leone said “It makes people real listeners, which is a key to empathy.”

Leone addressed how to listen to students, and understand and identify the different trauma they may be experiencing.

Drawing from his personal experiences as a troubled youth, Leone emphasized the role of teachers in his life helping him

become who he is now.

“Education, in my opinion, is the most noble profession, and the most scrutinized,” Leone said.

Colaluca said he has heard Leone speak previously, and that his message about trauma is universal.

“More and more in society we are dealing with students who have different types of pain and trauma,” Colaluca said.

He explained his goal with bringing Leone to speak to teachers is to help them have

the tools to be more empathetic and knowledgeable about mental health.

“The Austintown district is great, and we are already ahead of the game when it comes to training,” Colaluca said. “We want to continue that trend.”

Colaluca said that Leone will return to the schools in August for a longer, more personalized training with teachers.

“He’s a wealth of knowledge, and in today’s world we need more people like him,” Colaluca said.

Jennifer Jablonski and Jason Vinkler were united in marriage at 1 p.m.

June 23, 2018, at St. Edward Church in Youngstown. The ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Richard Murphy. Concelebrants were the Rev. Joseph Jablonski, the Rev. Frank Lehnerd, Monsignor Robert Siffrin, the Rev. Melvin Rusnak and the Rev. Shawn Conoboy. A reception took place that evening at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman.

Parents of the newlyweds are John and Jodie Jablonski of Liberty and Jim and Trudy Vinkler of New Middletown.

The bride wore an A-line gown with a sweetheart neckline, lace-trimmed skirt and beaded appliques with a buttoned-down back.

The responsibilities of maid of honor were entrusted to Rosina Muoio. Bridesmaids, donning royal blue dresses, were Stef Douglas, sister of the groom; Sarah Mitchell; Stephanie Anderson; Arica Hardgrove; and Elise Schafer. Nicolina Corsell, the bride’s cousin, was the junior bridesmaid.

The flower girl was Kathleen Aulisio, goddaughter of the groom.

Joe Aulisio performed the duties of best man, and groomsmen were Johnny Jablonski, the bride’s brother; Brian Douglas, brother-in-law of the groom;

The Mackovicks honored for 50th anniversary Robert and Amelia Mackovick of Boardman recently celebrated their 50th anniversary during a luncheon at the Springfield Grille.

The event was hosted by the couple’s children, Robert (Tracy) Mackovick Jr., William (Mandy) Mackovick, Jennifer Mackovick, all of Boardman; and Julie Mackovick of Columbus. Two grandsons, Robert Mackovick III and Brandon Mackovick, complete their family.

Mr. Mackovick and the former Amelia Battaglini were married Feb. 15, 1969, at St. Anthony Church in Youngstown.

Mrs. Mackovick was the head cook at the Paisley House in Youngstown until she retired in 2014.

Her husband was the plant protection manager for Republic Steel/LTV in Warren for 37 years. He retired in do sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and served in the Panama Canal Zone and 2002.

Mr. Mackovick was an Air comman- in Mountain Home, Idaho.

The ring bearer was Grady Aulisio.

Mrs. Vinkler graduated from Walsh University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in theology. She also graduated from Youngstown State University with COLUMBUS a doctorate degree in physical therapy.

Miss Mulholland, Mr. Corbett plan summer wedding CANFIELD

Robert and Nancy Mulholland of Canfield are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Katie Mulholland, also of Canfield, to William Corbett of Boardman.

The prospective groom’s parents are Daniel and Melody Corbett of North Jackson.

The couple will be united in marriage July 19 during a ceremony at Catawba Island Club in Port Clinton, where a reception will follow. Invitations will be issued for both events.

The bride-elect graduated from John Carroll University with a bachelor’s degree in early-childhood education and is a third-grade teacher in the Beaver Local School District.

The couple honeymooned in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and reside in Columbus.
