Velt picked up the hobby of baking and decorating cookies when she retired four years ago. “I started doing this as a hobby just for fun and I fell in love with it,” said Velt. requests from her friends and family to make some for them. Velt decorated more than 9,000 cookies in 2016. Velt has been teaching classes for a couple years and enjoys teaching and watching others learn and be creative. At Fellows, the guests decorated six Valentine’s Day shaped cookies with pink, red and white royal icing. When the cookies were done being decorated, there was a mason jar, tissue paper and other decorations to turn the jar into a holder. Once the holder was created, the cookies were put inside and they resembled a bouquet. “It’s very inexpensive to do and
you just get better the more you do it,” said Velt. Cookie decorating is something people of all ages can enjoy. A group of ladies who have been friends for 35 years said they loved the program and it was fun to try something different while doing it together. There were also mother-daughter and grandmother-grandaughter partners who used to program as a way to spend time together while making a delicious bouquet. “It’s something you can really enjoy. It takes a small amount of space at home, a little bit of equipment and a lot of time. It’s relaxing,” said Velt. Velt loves seeing the creativity people come up with when they decorate. If someone doesn’t like something they made, they’re going to eat it anyway.

The man also tried to pull away from an officer, then repeatedly kicked a window in a cruiser, authorities alleged. Drugs: A traffic stop in the 4900 block of Southern Boulevard resulted in the arrest of Tina M. Stanke, 39, on charges of drug abuse, resisting arrest and obstructing official business. Stanke, of Southern Boulevard, Boardman, had in her purse two loose over-the-counter pills; she also ignored officers’ commands, they alleged. Criminal damaging: A Struthers man said he came out of a Doral Drive big-box store and noticed several scratches on his car’s driver’s-side doors, likely from a key. Theft: Jassilyn A. Harris, 26, and Tasha M. Thomas, 29, faced two counts of theft. The two Akron women were accused of stealing $720 worth of merchandise from Finish Line and $300 worth of property from Victoria’s Secret Pink, both in Southern Park Mall.

A mong t he 18 best h ig h school jazz musicians in Ohio this year are Boardman High School Students, Miles Spearman and Rohun Vangal. Miles is a sophomore trumpet player and Rohun is a senior piano player. Both students are members of BHS Jazz Ensemble 1. The Ohio Music Education Association organizes an AllState Jazz Ensemble every year to perform at its annual Professional Development Conference. Prospective candidates from Ohio high schools go through a blind audition process. The selected group is a standard big band of 17 or 18 musicians. There are five saxophones, four trombones, four or f ive tr umpets, one each of guitar, piano, bass and drums. Miles and Rohun spent the first weekend in February in Clevela nd rehea rsing w it h the other students selected for the ensemble. They were led by Dean Sorenson who is Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Minnesota and a composer/arranger for the Neil A. Kjos Music Company. The group performed on Feb. 4 to a packed Marriott ballroom adjacent to the Huntington Convention Center in Cleveland. The students’ band and jazz director Thomas Ruggieri was
