99th birthday party

Neighbors serves the towns of Boardman, Austintown, Canfield and Poland and is published every Saturday in The Vindicator. It also is distributed free to nonsubscribers in those towns.

It was a joyous occasion for Martha Woodworth, who recently celebrated her 99th birthday with family and friends. On Feb. 3, Woodworth was joined by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Susan of Boardman, granddaughter Michelle Hite and grandson Brian also of Boardman. She was very surprised to see her grandson, Billy, who was in from California. Martha is a member of Heritage Presbyterian Church in Youngstown and a resident of the Commons Assisted Living in Boardman where she is a friend to many. She spends her days reading, playing cards and knitting. She also enjoys the weekly bingo game with her friends and never misses anytime there is music playing or when there is Handel’s ice cream.

Pasta dinner helps support Boardman Athletics By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Boardman High School hosted its third annual Athletics Booster Pasta Dinner on Feb. 19. The pasta dinner is put on during the basketball season and is sponsored by the Boardman Booster Club to help benefit Boardman athletics. The Booster Club members, other volunteers and some Boardman athletes were at the dinner selling raffle tickets, serving meals and helping in other various

ways. “The Boardman Booster has executive committee members that are here to help tonight. They are an organization that is extremely supportive of all of our athletic teams,” said Denise Gorski, Boardman Athletic Director. The dinner is planned out to be on the night of a basketball game against a local rival team for the guests to enjoy after. Gorski uses halftime to honor the senior cheerleaders, basketball players, managers and commu-

nity members who have given a lot to the Boardman schools, as well as Boardman superintendant, Frank Lazzeri, who is retiring after 44 years as superintendent, and Tim Saxton, the upcoming superintendent. Gorski credited Diana Alvino and Jean Armstrong, two executive committee members of the Booster Club, for all of the work they do, as well. They are two large contributors to the dinner and to the Booster Club that helps Boardman and its athletics in several ways.

“I couldn’t even think of doing something like this without the two of them,” said Gorski. This has become an annual tradition and a way to bring the Boardman community members together with the athletic community at Boardman. The Booster Club allows the Boardman athletics to have events like this and show how appreciated the athletic teams and Booster Club are. “It’s a way to develop camaraderie between all of our athletic teams,” said Gorski.

Children create baskets of love By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Boardman library hosted a special Night Owl Story time for children on Feb. 9. The story time this week revolved around Valentine’s Day and was led by librarian Karen Saunders. The children who attended sat on small carpets behind the story snakes as Saunders read them stories about Valentine’s Day. The first book she read was “Happy Valentine’s Day, Curious George,” by N. Di Angelo. Saunders then led the children in singing a little song. The last book to be read was “Snow Valentines,” by Karen Gray Ruelle. The craft the children made this story time was heart-shaped baskets. Saunders instructed the children on how to make the baskets by cutting out shapes from paper and gluing them together. There were heart stickers for the children to use to stick the handle on the basket when it was put together. “When the baskets are made, the children will come up and will get a surprise in their basket,” said Saunders. After the children finished making their basket, Saunders and put a candy treat in their baskets. Students become young chefs By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

West Boulevard Elementary has been hosting a special six week after-school program for the students to create their own healthy snacks. On Feb. 9, the students made a version of sushi rolls. The “Tot Chef” program at West Boulevard allows students to explore healthy snack alternatives by making the snacks themselves. The program lasts six weeks and every week the same 30 students attend to make different snacks. Natalie Winkle, the Director of Food Services for Boardman, said the program has been fun for the children and they’re enjoying making new things. “They’re eating what they like. The majority of them are putting vegetables on there,” said Winkle. The students had a choice of turkey, ham, carrots, kale, olives, cheese and ranch on a whole grain tortilla. After the students wrap up their ingredients, they can cut it to make it look like sushi. “If you have a hand in making it, I think you’re more up to trying it because you know you did it,” said Winkle. The students have made apple sandwiches and kabobs. One

We not only lost almost 40 lbs. in 40 days, better health has returned. My husband, age 67, was off his diabetes medicine in 10 days. My daughter & I are off our blood pressure medication and blood pressure is Normal. It was so exciting to get up every morning and see who lost the most weight and start off a brand new day with more energy, fat loss, and better health. Absolutely too good to be true. Many aches & pains are gone. We are anxious to start on our 2nd round of the program to reach our goal weight!! Thanks again. Rudy, Kathryn, Miriam, Kathy D.
