Canfield Circuit Birds ready to fly By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Canfield High School FIRST Robotics Team 4601, also known as Canfield Circuit Birds, is hard at work preparing for this year’s competition. The team, which consists of 23 students from all grade levels, will travel to the FIRST robotics competition in Cleveland, March 17-19. The team has worked daily in their ‘nest’ at Canfield High School, including weekends and snow days, sometimes working late into the night. The rules of the contest require the team to finish and pack up their robot before traveling to the competition, as they are given a strict six-week schedule to complete their build. Each team is given a kit of parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC and a mix of automation components – and only limited instructions. The name of the game this year at the FIRST robotics competition is FIRST Stronghold. The theme is medieval kingdom, with teams’ robots having to breach defenses and capture the tower by shooting 10-inch foam dodge balls through 8-feet high goals and conquering a variety obstacles on the terrain which are in their way. Disney Imagineers helped design the medieval kingdom for the competition. Students will ‘drive’ the robot, which they have named Shadow,

with video game controllers and joy sticks and have installed a camera to help ‘see’ where the robot is going and what type of obstacle it is facing. “We put mountain boarding tires on our robot, which we think will help it get over the tough medieval terrain to get to the castle. We can view a bunch of different ideas from different groups online about the design of our robot, so we can combine those ideas with our own design ideas, like the tires. We are really hoping to make it to the championship in this competition,” said team member Bobby Hudock. Canfield High School engineering graphics teacher Don Crum serves as the team’s advisor, with Dr. Mike Crescimanno and Fred Cutrer serving as mentors. “We really appreciate our parent volunteers. We could not do this without them. This program would not survive without parent involvement and other volunteers. It takes everyone, including students, parents and the community, to make this program successful and it has been very successful with everyone working together,” said Mary Crescimanno, Circuit Birds board member. Children who attended the Groundhog event at Ford Nature Center on Feb. 5 created their own groundhog in a hole during craft time.

Children dig into the life of a groundhog at Ford Nature Center By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Once per month, Ford Nature Center hosts a program for children about nature and the different animals in it. This month, the children learned about groundhogs on Feb. 5, just a few days after Groundhog’s Day. Hillary Lenton, Mill Creek Park naturalist, taught the children all about groundhogs and their lifestyle. Lenton went over the different names for groundhogs, such as whist lepigs, groundhogs and woodchucks. Groundhogs got the name whistlepig because they whistle to each other to show signs of danger. The activity the children participated in this month was tunnel crawling. Lenton set up two tunnels for the children to crawl through like groundhogs would do in their tunnels they dig. Several of the children returned to the tunnels to play in after the program was over. “The children were crawling through the tunnels,” said Lenton. “The groundhogs dig their holes in the ground, they dig tunnels and move about 700 pounds of dirt and rocks in a day.”

Rylynn, one of the children who attended the Groundhog event at Ford Nature Center, crawled through the tunnels that were set up for the children to use to act like groundhogs crawling through their tunnels.

To end the program, the children made little groundhogs on a stick to pop up from a small cup which represented the groundhog’s hole. When the children finished putting their craft together, Lenton whistled to show there was danger and the children popped their

groundhogs in and out of their holes. The next program will be about owls and will take place on March 10 at Pioneer Pavillion. Mill Creek Parks will also be celebrating their 125th anniversary in April.

We not only lost almost 40 lbs. in 40 days, better health has returned. My husband, age 67, was off his diabetes medicine in 10 days. My daughter & I are off our blood pressure medication and blood pressure is Normal. It was so exciting to get up every morning and see who lost the most weight and start off a brand new day with more energy, fat loss, and better health. Absolutely too good to be true. Many aches & pains are gone. We are anxious to start on our 2nd round of the program to reach our goal weight!! Thanks again. Rudy, Kathryn, Miriam, Kathy D.
