ave you ever lived on the street, in a car, or in a cardboard box?
267 families in Mahoning County have done just that. According to COHHIO, in 2015 there were 267 homeless families, up 196.6% from the year before. I heard a story the other day that just broke my heart. For Robby and his mother, Sophie, homelessness started with abuse. She is 28 years old, graduated at the top of her class in high school and is now the FILIPOVICH mother of three children, ages 4, 5, and 9. Robby tried to protect his mother at the young age of 8, but to no avail. After many frightening nights hiding under his blanket and listening to his father’s threats, Sophie fled with her children first to a domestic violence shelter and finally to a different state. Soon after they arrived in the shelter, Robby developed a consistent
cough that required many trips to the emergency room. Ultimately, Robby was diagnosed with asthma and depression, for which he was prescribed medication. The experience of homelessness had taken a toll on his physical and emotional health. His emergency room visits became more frequent. Coughing and breathing difficulties limited his ability to play, talk, and sleep comfortably. Sophie’s homelessness made it difficult for her to access the services needed to address her son’s health. Robby feels excluded from the community and emotionally it has been challenging to connect with his peers at school. This little boy blames himself for their presence in a shelter and apologizes to his mother for not being able to keep her safe. What a burden for a 7-year-old to endure!
