Evening with the Easter Bunny Boardman Park will present an evening with the Easter Bunny from 5:307:30 p.m. April 10 and 11. Tickets will go on sale at the park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, starting March 11. Tickets may also be obtained by calling the park office at 330-726-8105 to pay by credit card, or online at www.boardmanpark. com. Tickets are $7 for Boardman residents and $9 for non-residents. Children 2 and under are free. The evening includes dinner, arts and crafts and a family photo with the Easter Bunny.

Paws Town at Boardman Park Enjoy the benefits of the outdoors by joining the Marge Hartman’s Paws Town Dog Park at Boardman Park. The 3.25-acre fenced in dog park has separate fenced in areas for large and small dogs, water fountains, a dog wash station, benches, small shade trees and dog waste bags. One year memberships to Paws Town are available for 2019-20 and will be valid from date of purchase through March 31, 2020.

Membership costs for Boardman residents are $40 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Non-Boardman resident fees are $65 for one dog

and $10 for each additional dog. Membership packets may be picked up at the Boardman park office from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the outdoor literature boxes at the dog park or online at boardmanpark. com. One day passes are also available for $5. Bring your dog’s shot records on veterinarian letter head, rabies and county tag numbers. Trees may be purchased in honor of or in memory of your dog to be planted in Paws Town.

Cardinal Mooney High School announces 16th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 16th annual fundraising auction as April 13. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, Youngstown, between 5:30 and 11 p.m. Cocktails and silent auction to begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. This year’s honorary chairwoman is CMHS teacher, mentor and Cardinals sports enthusiast, Nancy Shugart. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists.

The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work.

Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. CHC students have fun with STEM

C.H. Campbell Elementary School hosted its annual STEM Week Feb. 25 through March 1, with each grade level designated a day to learn about science, technology, engineering and math.

Each grade enjoyed a STEM day with activities which were grade level appropriate and corresponded with the grade level’s curriculum. Each class had one hour in the gym and was divided into groups, with each group assigned to a station and then they rotated through the science, technolog y, engineering and math stations, spending approximately eight minutes at each station.

“It’s great how our parent volunteers have devoted their time to help with STEM. It’s really awesome and we appre-

ciate their help,” said Melissa Styranec, third-grade STEM chairperson.

For the third-graders, there were two engineering stations.

Channeling Angry Birds at the first station, students were asked to build a structure with blocks which could withstand ba lls a nd ot her items shot from a catapult at the other engineering station.

At one science station, students were taught about sublimation and chemical reaction using dry ice. Tim Styranec, parent volunteer and member of the Youngstown State University Health and Safety Department, performed several dry ice experiments for the students.

“I wa nted to teach t hem about sublimation, but in a fun way. I compared dry ice to regular ice and explained how dry ice goes from a solid to a gas, while regular ice goes from a solid to a liquid, all because of carbon dioxide. I wanted to

make it fun and hands-on as a way to get them interested in science. The younger they are when get interested in science the better, and one day they may pursue a career in science,” Styranec said.

With the help of parent volunteer Michelle Sebastiani at the other science station, the students experimented with instant snow, helping to measure and weigh the materials.

Students could also hypothesize about what would happen when water was added to the instant snow material.

For one math station, students played a giant game of Minecraft, solving problems and using graphing skills. The Minecraft game was a competition between the third-grade classrooms, with correct answers being tallied by class on a piece of poster board.

At the other math station, students played a game of Race to the End using multiplication f lashcards. Each time a

student got a flashcard answer correct, he or she moved the race car through the race track to the finish line.

The technology station was t he sa me for k inderga r ten through fourth grade. This year, the students experienced airplane simulation using iPads. Students could see the plane’s control panel on the screen and moved the iPad to simulate f lying the plane.

Students had a choice of six planes to fly.

“This is such a great program. I really like to see the students learning about science, technolog y, engineering and math while having fun doing it,” Melissa said.

A Look and See table was set up in the middle of the gym for students to be able to touch and feel several items related to science, technolog y, engineering and math, including magnifying glasses, play dough, binoculars, magnets and kaleidoscopes.

Local church offers egg drop and hunt There will be a free giant egg drop and Easter egg hunt at Canfield Presbyterian Church on March 30 from 10 a.m. until noon. This event is free and open to the public. Children will enjoy a puppet show, Easter egg hunt and can participate in building an egg protection unit to protect a raw egg from drops of 6, 15, and 40 feet. Light refreshments are also provided. The Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance will host the All That Glitters Champagne Luncheon and Fashion Show on April 5, at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center.

All proceeds will benefit The Rich Center for Autism and The Walnut Grove-A Field of Opportunity.

The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a social, table auction and boutique shopping. A plated lunch, which includes Lenten and vegetarian/gluten free selections, will follow at noon. At 1 p.m., a fashion show will be presented by Possessions, Aebischers Jewelry and Reserve Run Golf Pro Shop (men’s fashions). Magnolia’s on the Green Salon will provide hairstyling and makeup services.

Celebration of Scouting Breakfast set for April 30 The Whispering Pines District Great Trail Council Boy Scouts of America’s 14th Annual Celebration of Scouting Breakfast fundraiser will take place on April 30, at Holiday Inn Boardman, located at 7410 South Avenue, Youngstown.

This year’s program will feature keynote speaker Frank LaRose, Eagle Scout and Ohio Secretary of State. Serving as master of ceremonies is Mark Luke.

Doors open at 7 a.m. and breakfast will be served between 7:15-7:45 a.m., with the program concluding by 9 a.m.

Friendly Squares March square dance The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on March 9 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. Relay swimmers compete at state Neighbors | Submitted

Two relay teams of the Canfield High School boys swim team made it to the podium at the OHSAA Division II state tournament on Feb. 22. The 200 free relay team placed fifth, while the 400 free relay team of Kutsch, Luke Dietz, Peckman and Paris placed eighth at the state swim meet finals at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Paris also qualified for the state finals and placed 16th in the state for the individual 50 free style.

The Canfield library hosted a family-friendly Saturday movie matinee on Feb. 9.

To start the event, youth librarian Amanda Kollar welcomed ever yone a nd a nnounced the movie that would be shown.

“Welcome everyone to our family movie afternoon. Today we are going to watch ‘Smallfoot.’ It’s like ‘bigfoot,’ but in re-

verse. There are lots of famous actors and actresses that voice the characters, like Channing Tatum, LeBron James, James Corden and Zendaya,” Kollar said.

Attendees could bring their own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie.

“Smallfoot” is an animated musical which follows a group of Yeti who come across a human, with each species thinking the other was just a myth.

A group of self-proclaimed chocoholics attended Chocolate Cake Day at the Canfield library on Jan. 28.

Led by Stuart Gibbs, adult librarian, attendees discussed several aspects of chocolate, were quizzed on chocolate facts and played a game using chocolate candies.

Attendees were asked to bring a favorite chocolate dessert recipe to share and they did not disappoint. Recipes for hoho cake, black forest cake, caramel layer chocolate cake and chocolate cream pie were passed out for everyone to take home.

As people entered the sweet event, Gibbs handed them a paper with a chocolate joke written on it and later, during the program, asked them to read their joke aloud.

Gibbs gave a short history on chocolate, including the fact that during the Revolutionary War, sometimes soldiers were paid in chocolate.

Gibbs prepared a 10-question chocolate trivia quiz for

the evening, and included such questions as, ‘How much is the chocolate industry worth?’ and ‘Was the Milky Way candy bar named after the galaxy?’ The answers, respectively, are $110 billion and no, the Milky Way candy bar was named after a milkshake.

Gibbs also set up a game where attendees attempted to toss Hershey kisses into a cup and the one with the most kisses in their cup was named the winner. Gibbs also read the book, “Betty Bunny Loves Chocolate Cake” by Michael B. Kaplan.

To end the evening, Gibbs served a double layer chocolate cake with chocolate frosting to satisfy the sweet tooth.

“I tried to come up with an idea that everyone would love, and who doesn’t love chocolate?

We want to bring the public in with new ideas and new programs. Everyone can check the calendar for new programs or check the Happenings at your Library newsletter at libraryvisit.org/happenings,” Gibbs said.

As the last chocoholic left the event, she proclaimed the program, “Interesting and delicious.”

Library hosts Lego my Library

The Canfield library hosted Lego My Library, a program geared toward children ages 6 and up, on Feb. 2.

The program is designed for children to be able to work together with Legos and share ideas with each other.

“The children can build whatever they want with Legos while they are here. They can share ideas on how to build with Legos or share their designs and have fun working together,” said Amanda Kollar, assistant supervisor, youth librarian.

The librar y prov ides t he Legos, and even offers bigger blocks for younger children so all are accommodated.

Kollar said the Legos provide an opportunity for the children to work on several skills.

“The children can use their fine motor skills, sensory skills and imagiantion when building with Legos,” Kollar said.

Katelyn Rakers and her mom, Colleen, came to the program to build something different.

“We wanted to come here to build with different Legos than the ones we have at home,” Colleen said.

Kollar also set out several books on Legos, such as “Awesome Lego Creations,” “The Unofficial Lego Builder’s Guide” and “Stacks of Lego Facts...Absolutley Everything You Need to Know,” for the children to use while they were there and check out to read at home.

The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of March, stations focus on mathematics. Early math skills include counting, recognizing numerals, sorting and classifying objects, and creating
