Special guests get own night to shine By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Highway Tabernacle served as one of 380 churches who were selected to host Night to Shine sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation on Feb. 10. Guests with special needs ages 14 and up were invited to dress up and have a special night of their own to celebrate. People showed up in dresses, tuxedos, suits and several other outfits that made them feel nice and ready for the night. Night to Shine is a worldwide event that provides an unforgettable prom night experience. Those who attended could get their hair done, make up done, nails done and their shoes shined to get them prepared for the dance. After getting pampered, guests enjoyed a dinner and got their picture taken. “We are so thrilled that we got to do this,” said Pastor Gary Gray. Before the dance started, the guests got to ride in a limo around the building. Once they were dropped off at the door of the gymnasium, the guests
walked on a red carpet as they entered the dance and got there picture taken as they were on the red carpet. “It’s a night where we can honor special needs guests and let them have a night where they can shine,” said Duane Corll. There were 112 special needs guests who attended the event and close to 100 volunteers who came to help out with whatever was needed. There were volunteers who came from other churches to help out and support the good cause. Busi nesses f rom a rou nd the community donated their time, money or any other goods that would benefit the Night to Shine. “We’re speechless at this moment. It’s just an incredible moment to watch all these faces walk in with the smiles and the excitement,” said Tracie Corll. Once a church is chosen to host the Night to Shine, they are eligible to continue to host the event in the future. Highway Tabernacle hopes to continue the event and bring people from the community together to host a special moment.

Chaney student moves to State Speech and Debate Tournament In her second year as a member of the Chaney speech and debate team, sophomore Yelisa Cortez achieved what some students never do. Yelisa qualified for the Ohio High School Speech League State Tournament. The tournament took place on March 3-4 in Berea. She competes in the Humorous Interpretation category. Competitors in HI take a selection from a single published work and interpret it, recreating the story, characters and
emotions, according to the OHSSL Competitive Events Manual. Her piece from Bekah Brunstetter’s, “Fat Kids on Fire,” relays the struggles of young people as they try to fit in. Cortez is the Chaney speech and debate team’s third state tournament qualifier. The team was revived in 2014 after years of being inactive. She also was a semi-finalist for the National Qualifying Tournament, finishing in the top eight.
This is the first year that Cortez has qualified for the state tournament. Jim Courim and Carla Gipson, Chaney speech and debate coaches, will accompany Yelisa to the tournament next month. Earlier this school year, the Chaney High School speech and debate team received recognition from the Ohio House of Representatives for achieving charter membership in the state speech league.

A father and daughter pair danced during the annual Father Daughter Dance at Boardman Park on Feb. 16.
Fathers and daughters spend magical evening together By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fathers and daughters gathered at Boardman Park for the 14th annual Father Daughter Dance on Feb. 10-11 and 16-19. This is the first year the event occurred over a six-night period. The Father Daughter dance has been so popular and successful in recent years all of the nights would sell out, so Boardman Park decided to add two more nights to allow more people to sign up. Fathers can bring their daughters as long as they are between the ages of 5- and 12-years-old. There have been father and daughter pairs who have come for multiple years while this year was the first for others. One father has been com-
ing with his two daughters for 13 years. Michael Snyder and his younger daughter, Lillian, will enjoy the Father Daughter Night for the last time in 2018 before Lillian gets too old to attend anymore. “With a busy schedule and being on the run, it’s nice to be able to relax and spend time together,” said Michael. Lillian said she enjoys everything the event has to offer and is sad next year is her last year. The night consists of several activities for the father and daughter pairs. They can come and get their picture taken professionally, enjoy a meal, dance and participate in a rose ceremony toward the end of the night. The pairs could also make a craft to take home as
PAGE 5
a way to remember the special occasion. “It’s a tribute to the dads and their family values here in the Valley,” said Karen McCallum, recreation director of Boardman Park. After eating and dancing, the rose ceremony was ready to begin. Fathers and daughters were separated into two different rooms while McCallum gave the fathers instructions on what to do. The fathers would walk into the other room where their daughters were and give them a rose. The pairs would then dance to “My Girl” as a celebration. As the night started to wind down, the fathers and daughters would collect their items and make their way home.

AES principal has special story time Au st i ntow n E lement a r y School had some happy campers during the school’s annual book fair. On Feb. 16, five lucky students were selected to have storytime with Principal Tom Lenton in a tent set up in the gymnasium, complete with a “campfire.” AES students were asked to color a picture and give a $1 donation to help buy books for children who could not afford them during our book fair.
When they donated the $1 they were able to pick a pencil; students who picked the winning pencil attended storytime. Winner were Enrique Martinez (second-grade), Chris Johnson (second-grade), Amireona Mcllwain (Kindergarten), Alexia Little (first-grade) and Bryce Freudenberg (Kindergarten).
