Boardman Park hosted its Father Daughter Dance for the thirteenth year in a row Feb. 1114. Tickets go on sale a month ahead of time and all four nights this year were sold out in two weeks, with 60 couples each night. Boardman Park Recreation Director, Karen McCallum, has worked hard on putting the night together. She said that the dads who bring their daughters to the event are responsible for the success of the event. “I love to credit the dads of the community for the success of this program because that just shows what commitment to family values this area, this community has,” said McCallum. The night consists of dinner, a craft and a lot of dancing. There is also a rose ceremony, in which the dads present their daughters with a rose with a poem on it and serenade them to the song “My Girl.” See DAUGHTER, Page 5

Some of the dads have older daughters they used to bring and are now bringing their younger daughters. There are also dads that have come from out of town, including areas such as Canton and Akron. The night started with dinner and a craft and then all of the couples moved into a bigger room for the dancing. Songs that everyone will enjoy are played. Some songs are played for the daughters to teach their fathers dances, while the fathers get a chance to teach their daughters dance moves from songs they know as well. WFMJ News personality Madonna Chism-Pinkard visited Robinwood Lane Elementary on Feb. 19 for a special Black History Month lesson. Pinkard has visited Robinwood several times to present lessons to students and be part of various activities. Pinkard is a frequent visitor of Jan Zorman’s fourth-grade class. Zorman was previously Pinkard’s teacher and the two have remained good friends since. During Pinkard’s visit she talked about the first woman millionaire, who happened to be an African American. Her name was Sarah Breedlove, but more commonly known as Madam C.J. Walker. Walker created hair products for African American women. She was known for creating a substance for styling women’s hair. “I love how fun and hyper she gets, she’s so funny. When she teaches she gets comfy and hyperactive. It’s so fun,” said one student, Corynne Foster, of Pinkard.

Guests who attended the weekend getaway had the opportunity to take classes and learn new techniques, show off their projects and continue working on current projects. There were around 100 attendees, eight teachers and three vendors. The getaway happens once per year, Friday through Sunday, and usually attracts about 100 guests. The guests said nothing but good things about the Boardman Holiday Inn and how much they were willing to compromise and work with the guests. There were people on hand to sharpen tools for the guests and help fix machines. The event was put together with a lot of teamwork. Barb King helped w ith sponsorship, while Jan Hittle handled the registrar and helped get all
of the communications to the guests. “I would say more than half of our people come because they enjoy the social camaraderie with their friends and the quilting hobby itself provides that for them. It gives them a reason to come together to enjoy being with friends or other quilters,” said Ralston. The were centerpieces made by Nonie McDevitt, a member of the quilting guild, and other volunteers. The centerpieces were dolls that each had their own attitude about stitching. There was an unfinished quilter, a Gidget the Gadget quilter, a Nanny Granny quilter and more. At the end of the weekend, the centerpieces were given away as prizes. “For us to come and sit here and touch and look at it, it’s like a little child in a candy shop. That’s how we are with fabric, we love the colors and touching it,” said Ralston.
