Poland students to learn about government Poland Seminary High School junior students Jacob Hockensmith, Andrew Comstock and Jeffrey Vrabel will attend the 2016 session of American Legion Buckeye Boys State, hosted June 12-19 on the campus of Bowling Green State University. Buckeye Boys State is a “hands on” workshop in the principles and organization of Ohio government. Young men attending Boys State learn about Ohio Government by operating the agencies and levels of a mythical state government named the “51st State” themselves.
Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for March 21 The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be March 21 from 6-8 p.m. at Tequila Jalisco Mexican Restaurant, located at 583 E. Main St. in

Four students in the building, construction and remodeling program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center qualified for the SkillsUSA state competition. Brendan Schaal, Shaan Howard, Austin Piper and Jeff Smith competed in the regional competition on Feb. 27 at Auburn Career Center taking third place qualifying them for a trip to state. The MCCTC students will be headed to Columbus to compete in the SkillsUSA State Competition on April 25-27.

Pola nd Union celebrated Start With Hello Week with an assembly on Feb. 9 for the second-graders. Union welcomed speakers Andre Elliott, Anthony D’Apolito and Karen Romano Melone of the Mahoning County Juvenile Court. D’Apolito, a magistrate of the Juvenile Court, started off the program by speaking to the students about what he does at the Juvenile Court. He tried to explain how right versus wrong work and that people should always listen to what the little voice inside their head is saying is right. After D’Apolito finished his speech, Elliott took over and began speaking about Sandy Hook and how the Start With Hello campaign began. The first thing he explained was the Three Steps. The first step is to see someone alone, the second is to reach out to help and the third is to start with hello. Elliott brought up three of the second-graders to help him demonstrate the different icebreakers that are associated with the Three Steps.

Poland Elementary School Counselor Lauren Mechling was responsible for putting the Start With Hello Week together for Poland Union and Dobbins. Mechling got started with the Sandy Hook Promise last year when she was doing research on impactful, free re-
sources for school counselors. She came across the Sandy Hook Promise and immediately felt a connection to their mission. She then became a Promise Leader. “The purpose is to end social isolation and increase connectiveness,” said Mechling.
Mechling planned various activities throughout the week for the students at Poland Local Schools to celebrate Start With Hello Week. Students from each grade level interacted with each other on various levels to create a sense of connectivity between everyone.

Wittenauer’s class took turns putting valentines treats in each others boxes that they made after having their Valentine’s Day part y snacks. T he st udents took t u r ns passing a heart around during a song and when the song stopped, whoever was holding the heart got to sit in the middle of the circle. On Feb. 11, Bucci’s class of 3-year-olds had its Valentine’s Day party, along with Samantha Cox’s class. Bucci’s students also played the game of pass the heart around. Both of her classes wore hats made out of Valentine’s Day paper plates with a heart cut out of the middle. Boys and girls as young as kindergarten enjoyed a Hip Hop class as part of Poland’s After School Program. Dance teacher Teri Knobs gave the students her full attention during the class inside the old North Elementary building. Knobs teaches at Poland’s Stage Door Dance Studio. fellowship. The Newcomers Club of Canfield was formed to provide an opportunity for members of the community in and around Canfield to do just that while supporting the civ ic, social and charitable life of the communit y. It is further formed to engage in recreational and social activities in support of these purposes.
Local program provides formal dresses for families in need DIVA Donations is a formal clothing closet in Mahoning county located in the old South Range High School. They are a 501c3 formal clothing closet for low income families. The program is run completely by volunteers and is open by appointment. Girls can come to the closet borrow dresses, shoes and jewelry for events. Interested borrowers are required to place a deposit on the dresses: $25 for a short dress and $35 for a long dress. When returning the dresses, the girls have two options. If she brings everything back, she will receive $15 or $20 dollars back,
depending on the style of dress borrowed. This cost for a formal dress is far less than those in-store for events like prom and homecoming. In the second option, girls provide proof of donating one hour of community service to any 501c3 located in their area (at any time during the year) and they will receive a full refund. This option encourages community involvement and relieves financial burden from families. Read more about the program at DIVADonations.com. DIVA Donations is always looking for “Fairy Godmothers” to help girls pick out dress-
es and assist in the closet. They continually accept support in order to keep the closet doors open. To date, the program has ser ved 565 girls in the tricounty area, as well as a few girls in Pennyslvania. They also work with several social service agencies, churches and schools. Kristin Bodendorfer is the founder of DIVA Donations. Her ser v ice bega n w it h 15 dresses in her daughter’s closet and has grown to be a success. DIVA Donations is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. for families in need.

Poland Schools seek levy Short-term host family renewal in March opportunites available Poland Schools are seeking a $3.6 million levy renewal on the Primary Election ballot on March 15. School administrators want to make sure voters are aware this is a “renewal” and will be used only for the operational expenses of the district. Poland School District Treasurer Donald Stanovcak said the renewal levy would generate nearly $1.4 million annually, and would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $126 per year.
Mahoning, Columbiana, Portage and Trumbull County families will have the opportunity to welcome a young person from Japan into their home for one month this year, as part of an international exchange program being offered by the County OSU Extension, 4-H. Statewide, host families are needed for 100 Japanese participants (aged 12-18) and their adult chaperones, who will visit Ohio from July 23 through Aug. 18. Boardman Park hosted its Father Daughter Dance for the thirteenth year in a row Feb. 1114. Tickets go on sale a month ahead of time and all four nights this year were sold out in two weeks, with 60 couples each night. Boardman Park Recreation Director, Karen McCallum, has worked hard on putting the night together. She said that the dads who bring their daughters to the event are responsible for the success of the event. “I love to credit the dads of the community for the success of this program because that just shows what commitment to family values this area, this community has,” said McCallum. The night consists of dinner, a craft and a lot of dancing. There is also a rose ceremony, in which the dads present their daughters with a rose with a poem on it and serenade them to the song “My Girl.” Daughters from ages 5-12 Neighbors | Alexis Bartolomucci

Some of the dads have older daughters they used to bring and are now bringing their younger daughters. There are also dads that have come from out of town, including areas such as Canton and Akron. The night started with dinner and a craft and then all of the couples moved into a bigger room for the dancing. Songs that everyone will enjoy are played. Some songs are played for the daughters to teach their fathers dances, while the fathers get a chance to teach their daughters dance moves from songs they know as well. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Case of Austintown are marking 65 years of marriage. Their children are Cheryl Case of Raleigh, N.C.; Barbara Frank of Canfield; Janet Allen of Youngstown; James Case of Allentown, Pa.; and Laura Detwiler of Columbiana. Eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren complete their family. The former Betty Boyer married Mr. Case on Jan. 27, 1951, at Locust Grove Baptist Church in Salem. The Cases are members of Evangel Baptist Church in Boardman. Mrs. Case was a vending-machine attendant for Servomation in Youngstown and retired in 1982. Mr. Case retired in 1986 as a roll volunteer activities and is a U.S. Army turner for Youngstown Sheet & Tube in veteran, having served from 1946 to Youngstown. He participates in many 1950.

Phantoms Youth Hockey attend tourney The Phantoms Youth Hockey Association recently attended a tournament. All divisions were named after current USHL Phantom Players and who were on site to present awards. Teams also competed for championships in the Pittsburgh Area Hockey League (PAHL) Championships this weekend. The tournament was a huge success bringing 26 hockey teams w it h more t han 300 hockey players to the area. There were a total of 449 goals scored in the 98 games played. The Phantoms Youth Hockey Association would like to thank the Ice Zone, the Covelli Centre and the Mahoning County Convention and Visitors Board for assisting with this event. In the D’Austine Division, the following teams placed: Pittsburgh Jets (first), RMU Raptors (second), Beaver Valley Bagders (third) and Lawrence County Lightning (fourth). Poland Union students got a visit from the sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln, on Feb. 19. Lincoln, played by actor Richard Wottingham, visited the students in their classrooms in the morning. The students were able to spend time with him, ask him questions and get pictures taken with him. In the afternoon, Wottingham gave a presentation to the kindergarten and first-grade students, then another to the secondgrade students. Wottingham told the story of Abraham Lincoln from the perspective of Abraham Lincoln. He talked about his childhood and what it was like growing up, how he became a political figure, his presidency and finally his assassination. During the presentations, Wottingham was very engaging with the students. He stopped several times during his story to ask the students questions about Lincoln. Wottingham has been doing this consistently for the last three years, but has been pursuing acting for a long time. He previously moved to New York City to become an actor. “Seeing the looks of amaze-

dents the opportunity to learn more about Lincoln. The students interacted with Lincoln and learned about his personal life, not just what he did as president. Having a “Living Lincoln” walking around Union and talking about his life made this students more interested in learning rather than reading information from a book.

Students and faculty at Poland Dobbins celebrated a Pink Day on Feb. 19. There have been severa l theme days throughout the year for the Dobbins students to dress up and enjoy while sharing a simple and unifying message. The Pink day was to introduce the students to the cause of cancer awareness. Pink Day allowed the students to show their support for family and friends who may
have been or may be affected by cancer. Some of the students also celebrated their birthdays on this day. Feb. 19 was Birthday Bunch that is celebrated once the month for the students who have birthdays during that month. The students are able to sit at a table together during lunch, they get a treat, a card and a pencil. Dobbins will continue to have theme days as the school year goes on. This gives students an opportunity to portray a big message in a simple way.
