Canfield Middle School presents “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” A “tale as old as time” comes to Canfield Village Middle School as students present “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” The curtain goes up March 22-23 at 7:30 p.m. and March 24 at 2 p.m. for a cast and crew of 40 seventh- and eighthgrade students. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors, children 4 and under are free. Concessions will also be available during the show.

Love Rocks! mother talks to CVMS students Out of heartbreak comes Love Rocks! The mother behind this national movement was at Canfield Village Middle School on March 5.

Susan Deiter-Robinson, Canfield resident, was this month’s feature speaker in the Everyone’s Story Matters Series. She is the mother of Anna and Abigail, the children who inspired the universal Love Rock movement. On Oct. 20, 2013, the unthinkable happened to her family when her daughters, Anna (6) and Abigail (11) lost their lives in an accident. Out of this horrible tragedy came Love Rocks! Off the beaten path in Costa Rica Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Off the Beaten Path in Costa Rica” at 7 p.m. on March 26 at the Canfield library. Costa Rica has less than half the land area of Ohio, but it boasts a biological diversity similar to that of the entire United States. This program will explore the diversity of Costa Rican ecosystems and their wildlife by visiting six sites including several biological field stations seldom seen by tourists. This program will be presented by Dr. Charles McClaugherty based on field trips taken to Costa Rica by McClaugherty and his students at Mount Union over a period of 25 years.

McClaugherty retired last year after 30 years at the University of Mount Union in Alliance as professor of biology and director of the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center.

Ellen Monroe wins Canfield PTA’s Crazy Cash Giveaway

Canfield PTA has a Crazy Cash Giveaway 2019 winner and her name is Ellen Monroe. She won $10,000.

Monroe became the winner of the first Canfield PTA Crazy Cash Giveaway when her ticket was pulled by Canfield boys basketball head coach Todd Muckleroy at halftime of the Feb. 22 varsity game. Monroe was not present at the game, but still came away a big winner.

“We were out to dinner with some friends about the time they pulled the ticket,” said Ellen’s husband Russ.

“My hand was really itchy and my friend asked me if I had bought a lottery ticket that day. I said I had and also said I had bought a PTA cash giveaway ticket, not even thinking about winning that. I never really believed in the old itchy hand superstition, but I absolutely do now.”

Ellen and Russ’s daughter, Mena, is a third-grade student at C.H. Campbell Elementary School. Mena sold Ellen the ticket, and it was the only one she bought.

“I only bought one ticket and I really did not think I would win. I don’t even play the lotto because I don’t think I will ever win,” Ellen said.

Ellen bought the ticket to support the PTA. “Ellen bought the ticket to support a good cause, the schools and the PTA. So it didn’t matter if we won or not, we knew we were supporting the school where our daughter attends,” Russ said.

The Monroes didn’t even know they had won until the next day.

“After we got home from dinner, I saw there was a message, but I didn’t even listen to it. I checked the messages the next morning and couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I had Ellen listen and she said maybe it was for a smaller prize, not believing we had won the grand prize of $10,000. I called Noelle back and confirmed and was just like...wow,” Russ said.

The Monroes have a few plans for the money.

“We are going to put the majority of it in Mena’s savings account. We are also going to use some to travel to Florida to see family and Ellen wants some new counter tops in the kitchen,” Russ said.

According to Noelle Domer, first vice president overseeing fundraising for the Canfield PTA, all students will benefit from the general fundraiser.

“This is our first general fundraiser. All Canfield students will benefit from the money raised. Once we have tallied our final profit, we will reach out to the administration and PTA membership to get ideas and suggestions on how to use the money. Then the executive PTA board will vote on how to use it. We would like to use it on something tangible. We will not use it all right now.

We will use it as determined by the board,” Domer said.

Julie Miller, Canfield PTA president, said the organization hopes to have the raffle again next year.

“We hope to do this again next year. We sold approximately 450 tickets this year and hope to increase that next year. We are so excited to award this money to the Monroes. Congratulations to them. We are so happy for them. It couldn’t have happened to better people,” Miller said.

Four Canfield Village Middle School band students were selected to participate in the 2019 Ohio State University Middle School Honor Band Festival last month.

The eighth-grade representatives were Aidan Fay, French horn; Ryan Lamb, tuba; Gabriela Smallwood, oboe. The seventhgrade representative was Malia Swartz, flute. Three hundred and seventy-six musicians representing 133 middle schools in three states participated in the oneday festival. Dads and daughters from all over Ohio travelled to Boardman Park to celebrate the parks 16th annual Father Daughter Dance.

Recreation director Karen McCallum said the event ran for six days, encompassing two weekends.

“It’s a magical night for the fathers and daughters to spend time together,” McCallum said.

Daughters ages 5-12 attend the dance with their Fathers.

Boardman Park has a variety of activities available, including professional photos, balloon roses, dancing and dinner.

A drink fountain and cupcake tower were favorites of the girls, according to McCallum.

“I want to commend the dads of this community for embracing family time and making it a priority to come to this event annually,” she said.

At the end of the night, McCal-

lum said, they host a rose ceremony, where the fathers present their daughters with roses.

A special song is played for the 12-year-old girls who will be aging out of the dance as well.

“It’s just a wonderful tribute to this area, and this community that embraces family values,” McCallum said.

Families from Dayton and Cleveland made the drive in to celebrate the evening, according to McCallum, even on father making the call overseas.

“We had a dad who was deployed to Kuwait, he emailed me and said can you hold these,” McCallum said. “I said, ‘Of course I can.’”

She explained that each night of the event was sold out except one, which was only 10 ticket short.

“That’s how important this dance is,” McCallum said.

CHC students jump for a cause

Students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School participated in the annual American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge Feb. 4-6.

During the Kids Heart Challenge, formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart, students raised money to donate to the American Heart Association.

“We had an assembly to kick off the campaign on Jan. 18. The students received their donation envelopes and could set up online donations, which is convenient for anyone who would like to donate, but does not live close by. The online donations have risen in the past few years.

The school can earn money for PE equipment and the kids can earn thank you gifts for their donations,” said C.H. Campbell Elementary School physical education teacher Ronie Haurin.

During extended gym classes, Haurin set up stations where the students could jump rope, play basketball, use jump bands, hula hoop and play Dance Revolution.

Haurin said the students are also benefitting from the program.

“This is teaching them healthy heart habits. They are learning that they can exercise and have fun. And they are helping people all along,” Haurin said.

With a theme of Join our Heart Heroes, the children earned thank-you gifts from the American Heart Association based on how much they raised, including a jump rope, a T-shirt, a basketball, a dancing ball and a slime ball, with the top prize being wireless headphones.

The prizes were cumulative, so depending on how much a student raised, they could receive several prizes.

The Canfield Village Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team celebrated their 2019 AAC championship by cutting down the net in the gym where they cemented their place in school history on Feb. 18.

The basketball team is backto-back AAC champions, having also won the title last year as seventh-graders.

Team members are Emme Rubin, Carlie Harmon, Ali Crist, Emma Campbell, Haydyn Merritt, Gianna Snyder, Mackenzie

Koenig, Gianna Pannunzio, Delaney O’Brien, Cara Spencer, Ava Nohra, Bella Kennedy, Abby Muckleroy, Kate Sahli and Maddie McCartney.

The team went undefeated this season with a record of 14-0 under Coach Jim Harmon.

Friends and families of the team members gathered to watch the players each cut a piece of the basketball net as a keepsake of their championship win. The rest of the net will be placed in the school’s trophy case along with a team picture and a basketball signed by all the players.

While the students were being physically active, they were also raising money for the American Heart Association.

Throughout the week, under the direction of Linda Magyar, Hilltop Elementary School physical education teacher, students in grades kindergarten through fourth learned about the importance of heart health while having a good time jumping rope and enjoying other activities, such as hula hooping, hula hoop jumping, long jumping, vertical jumping, hopscotch, pull ups, long rope jumping, using steps and jumping over a ‘mat mountain.’

Magyar set up several stations for the activities and the students rotated around the gym. Music was also playing to help motivate the children.

Magyar set up a rest station the children could visit and get a drink if they need a little rest from all the jumping and physical activity.

Magyar said the children know they are doing a good thing for people who need help.

“They know they are doing a good thing and helping people. They want to be a heart hero. Many of them are jumping for someone in their family and they know heart problems may run in their family. They can also relate to the children who need help. There is one boy’s story on the pledge form, and the children can relate to him. They want to help him. The money we raise for the American Heart Association will

The Rev. Jeffrey Mickler heard the exchange of vows between Stephanie Muntean and Jeremy Mickler during a wedding ceremony at 1 p.m. Oct. 6, 2018, at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown.

After the newlyweds accepted congratulations at a reception at Stambaugh Auditorium, they honeymooned in Jamaica. They reside in Youngstown.

The bride is a daughter of Gary and Dolly Muntean of Poland. The parents of the groom are Mark Mickler of Youngstown and the late Jeanette Mickler.

The bride’s gown was designed of fine metallic lace with a strapless bodice and a sweetheart neckline which flowed into an A-lined skirt and chapellength train. A sheer lace jacket with long sleeves and a high neckline accented the dress. A cathedral-length veil of soft tulle completed her ensemble.

Jennifer Krawchyk, the bride’s sister, was matron of honor. Bridesmaids, wearing taupe-colored dresses, were Kristin Fox; Jessica Cene; Jennifer Drennen; Gina Vicarel; Chelsea Korda; and Kristin Puch, Stacey Finch and Elyse Kunzer, cousins of the bride.

Penelope Pavlak, cousin of the groom, was the flower girl.

The groom’s brother, Alex Mickler, held the responsibilities of best man.
