Mill Creek clean-up to be April 22 With more than 40 locations in the Mill Creek MetroParks system needing attention, more groups are needed more than ever to lend a hand and participate in this year’s Earth Day Cleanup. Although more than 300 scouts and volunteers are expected to scour Mill Creek MetroParks in recognition of Earth Day to remove winter buildup of litter and debris, more help is needed. The cleanup is co-sponsored by the Whispering Pines District of the Great Trail Council, B.S.A. and Mill Creek MetroParks. The cleanup takes place on April 22 throughout Mill Creek MetroParks. Coordinators will stop by the Ford Nature Education Center (840 Old Furnace Road, Youngstown, OH 44511) to pick up supplies before 9 a.m. and then meet with their groups at various locations and work until 12 p.m. This cleanup takes place rain or shine. In 34 years, more than 11,350 participants have volunteered more than 35,000 hours to clean various areas of the MetroParks. Just in the past 15 years, more than 2,200 bags of trash and 1,000 bags of recyclables along with numerous loose items such as tires, toys, furniture, pipes, wood crates, electronic items and even the proverbial kitchen sink, have been removed. Last year, there were fewer bags of trash but more bags of recyclables. As in years past, sponsorship of
this event is in cooperation with the Recycling Division of the Mahoning County Green Team. They will be providing these hardworking volunteers with garbage and recycling bags, gloves and grab-its, as well as pencils, certificates and car litter bags for each participant. This event is also in conjunction with the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup, the country’s largest community improvement program that kicks off in more than 20,000 communities each spring. This national program engages more than 5 million volunteers and participants who take action in their communities every year to create positive change and lasting impact. Details can be found out at https://www. kab.org/our-partners. The MetroParks hosts the event by facilitating the organization and registration of groups, sites and supplies. Rural Metro Ambulance will be on-site in case of an emergency. Areas within this cleanup include Mill Creek Park and Mill Creek MetroParks Regional Facilities Yellow Creek Park and the MetroParks Farm. For more information about this year’s cleanup or to have your group, organization, church, school, family or individuals come out and lend a hand, call the Ford Nature Education Center at 330740-7107 or Mike Kupec, Mill Creek MetroParks Earth Day Cleanup Chairman for the Boy Scouts, at 330-519-3988.

Preschool students celebrate Valentine’s Day By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Students at Poland North Preschool spread love throughout the school for Valentine’s Day on Feb. 13 and 14. All of the classes had Valentine’s Day boxes for the students to pass out Valentine’s cards to each other. Many students brought candy, pencils or other Valentine’s Day objects to pass out. Each class celebrated Val-
entine’s Day in a different way. Several of the students dressed up in Valentine’s Day clothing to celebrate. Students in Samantha Cox’s class participated in different Valentine’s Day themed science experiments, games and school work. The students practiced graphing using conversation candy hearts to see how many of each color there was, an experiment to see what would happen when the hearts
were put in water, soda and vinegar, and many more activities. Joy Bucci had students in her class make hats out of paper plates, make bracelets out of colorful beads and make a giant heart craft. There was a station for the students to decorate cookies with frosting and sprinkles. Terry Wittenauer and her class enjoyed a special snack that the students brought in to share
with each other. They then had the chance to pass out their Valentine’s Day cards before finishing up their school day. Danielle Argeras and her class made a giant Valentine’s Day heart craft using different colored construction paper. North Preschool had two full days of Valentine’s Day celebrations with the students sharing with each other and spreading the love in and out of the classroom.

Guests create edible bouquets for Valentine’s Day By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Guests at the Fellows Riverside Gardens on Feb. 11 created a sweet treat to take home for Valentine’s Day. Cindy Velt led a class on cookie decorating and creating a bouquet out of those cookies. Velt picked up the hobby of baking and decorating cookies when she retired four years ago. “I started doing this as a hobby just for fun and I fell in love with it,” said Velt. She taug ht hersel f f rom watching YouTube videos and soon got requests from her friends and family to make some for them. Velt decorated more than 9,000 cookies in 2016. Velt h a s b e en te ac h i ng classes for a couple years and enjoys teaching and watching others learn and be creative. At Fellows, the guests decorated si x Va lent ine’s Day shaped cookies with pink, red and white royal icing. When the cookies were done being decorated, there was a mason jar, tissue paper and other decorations to turn the jar into a holder. and you just get better the more you do it,” said Velt. Cookie decorating is something people of all ages can enjoy. A group of ladies who have been friends for 35 years said they loved the program and it was fun to try something different while doing it together. There were a lso mot herdaughter and grandmothergrandaughter partners who used to program as a way to
spend time toget her while making a delicious bouquet. “It’s somet h i ng you ca n really enjoy. It takes a small amount of space at home, a little bit of equipment and a lot of time. It’s relaxing,” said Velt. Velt loves seeing the creativity people come up with when t hey decorate. If someone doesn’t like something they made, they’re going to eat it anyway.

Special guests get own night to shine By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Highway Tabernacle served as one of 380 churches who were selected to host Night to Shine sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation on Feb. 10. Guests with special needs ages 14 and up were invited to dress up and have a special night of their own to celebrate. People showed up in dresses, tuxedos, suits and several other outfits that made them feel nice and ready for the night. Night to Shine is a worldwide
event that provides an unforgettable prom night experience. Those who attended could get their hair done, make up done, nails done and their shoes shined to get them prepared for the dance. After getting pampered, guests enjoyed a dinner and got their picture taken. “We are so thrilled that we got to do this,” said Pastor Gary Gray. Before the dance started, the guests got to ride in a limo around the building. Once they were dropped off at the door of the gymnasium, the guests
walked on a red carpet as they entered the dance and got there picture taken as they were on the red carpet. “It’s a night where we can honor special needs guests and let them have a night where they can shine,” said Duane Corll. There were 112 special needs guests who attended the event and close to 100 volunteers who came to help out with whatever was needed. There were volunteers who came from other churches to help out and support the good cause. Businesses f rom a rou nd
the community donated their time, money or any other goods that would benefit the Night to Shine. “We’re speechless at this moment. It’s just an incredible moment to watch all these faces walk in with the smiles and the excitement,” said Tracie Corll. Once a church is chosen to host the Night to Shine, they are eligible to continue to host the event in the future. Highway Tabernacle hopes to continue the event and bring people from the community together to host a special moment.

First mother-daughter night becomes tasty success By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Mothers and daughters spent time together during the first Cupcakes and Canvas night at Dobbins Elementary on Feb. 23. Previously, Dobbins has had mother and son and father and daughter nights, but this year the school wanted to try something different. The PTO began planning for the event in November by gathering supplies, getting volunteers and much more to make the night a suc-
cess. There were three main areas for the mothers and daughters to participate in. There was a place to paint their canvas, there was a DJ in the gym for dancing and cupcakes to eat and a backdrop for the pairs to get their picture taken. Theresa Rapp, the PTO event chair, said this created a good opportunity for mothers and their daughters to spend quality time together. “It’s good mother-daughter bonding time. Ever ybody’s
schedules are so hectic, so it’s a good time for moms and daughters to get together,” said Rapp. More t ha n 100 st udents showed up and brought their mothers, or any woman in their life that was important. Matt Batcho, an abstract artist, was invited to help lead the mothers and daughters during the canvas painting part of the night. Batcho hosts sip and paint parties and was happy to help bring the arts and creativity into Dobbins. “I think these events are great.
It brings all the kids together and there’s nothing like painting. It’s a good time, especially seeing how happy the kids are,” said Batcho. Many of the mothers who came back were Poland graduates and some attended Dobbins, so coming back to the school gave them the opportunity to create new memories with their daughters. Dobbins will be hosting a father and son night on March 9, which will have a Mad Scientist theme for the guests to enjoy.

Students dress for 100th day of school By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Samantha Cox and her transitional kindergarten class at Poland North Preschool celebrated their 100th day in a special
way on Feb. 13. Cox and her students showed up to school dressed like they were 100-years-old. Many of the girls wore dresses with shawls while the guys showed up in suspenders and sweater vests.
Some students wore wigs and hair curlers, some wore glasses and one student showed up wearing a fake gray mustache and eyebrows. The students took part in different activities that related to
their 100th day. The school work they did in class was all made to celebrate 100 days of class. The students enjoyed having the opportunity to dress up for school and celebrate a milestone day in their school year.
