BHS students earn Quiz Bowl title For the third consecutive year, the Boardman High School varsity quiz bowl team earned the Mahoning League title. The team competed for the championship at Youngstown State University on Feb. 25. They won matches over Warren Harding, United and Poland to be league tournament champions. The Mahoning League has expanded to 24 teams this year, and students must answer academic-based questions ranging from literature, science, math, history, etc. Boardman’s junior varsity and varsity teams are league champions for the third year in a row. Varsity team captain Pranav Padmanabhan, a junior, is the league’s leading scorer for the second consecutive year, averaging more than 100 points per
game. Coach Randy Nord said her 14-member group is hardworking. “I continue to be amazed at not only the players’ extensive knowledge in a wide variety of subject areas, but also at their persistent dedication to win,” she said. “Two of our players have gone the extra mile by attending ‘Quiz Bowl Camp’ during the summer. The team also practices together at an online forum they’ve created, above and beyond our weekly practices at Boardman High.” Boardman’s Quiz Bowl students are currently working on fundraising to help finance the trip to the state tournament in Columbus on April 8, and to the national tournament in Atlanta, Ga. on May 27.

Boardman library showcases the arts By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Boardman library is displaying art from Boardman students in kindergarten through sixthgrade from March 2-9. Students in third- through eighth-grade from the St. Charles youth choir kicked off the celebration on March 2 with a performance for guests at the li-
brary. The choir was led by Katelyn DeLadurantey, the first-year music teacher at St. Charles. The students performed pieces from “The Lion King” and have been preparing for two to three weeks. DeLadurantey chose “The Lion King” because it’s something she has done with children before and they loved it. “They were excited to learn, es-
pecially the different language,” said DeLadurantey. The St. Charles youth choir is an extra-curricular program that takes place outside of the school. The students meet once a week after school to rehearse for different programs they perform at. The Celebration of the Arts event is a tradition for the St. Charles youth choir to attend and perform at.
There were guests who were in the library and came in just to listen to the students perform. “There were extra people in the lobby who came in and the kids were so excited,” said DeLadurantey. The Boardman library will replace the current artwork on display with artwork from students in seventh- through twelfthgrade, starting March 16-23.
Join the Boardman library on April 5 and 19 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Students have revolutionary celebration By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Fourth-grade students at Robinwood Lane Elementary celebrated the end of the American Revolution reading workshop on March 9. All of the students created a synthesized battle that was part of the American Revolution. Fourth-grade teacher Jan Zorman taught the American Revolution using a cross be-
tween social studies and reading. The students learned everything from the beginning of the Revolution to the Treaty of Paris. The students had pizza, cake, juice and several other snacks as a way to celebrate the end of the American Revolution. Although the students loved the celebration and being able to eat red, white and blue snacks, they enjoyed learning about the Revolution and
the different battles and the people involved that took place during the Revolution. “I liked to learn about Paul Revere and John Hancock because I thought of ‘the red coats are coming,’ or the big signature by Hancock,” said Lily Haase who did the Battle of Charleston. “I picked a battle we talked about in class and I liked it so I knew a lot about it,” said Jimmy Carkido who did the Battle
of Fallen Timbers. “I looked up battles of the American Revolution and I found one that Mrs. Zorman didn’t talk about so I picked it,” said Gavyn Magada who did Battle of Harlem Heights. The students are looking forward to continuing the reading workshop in their book clubs. They will then debate the British against the English which the students become very invested in.

Brushing, flossing and eating healthy is all a part of a beautiful smile. Dr. Anthony Bisconti, a Valley orthodontist for more than 25 years, spent time recently with second-graders at Boardman Stadium Drive Elementary to talk about good dental health. Dr. Bisconti is a Boardman native, and he showed the students x-rays and talked about how not brushing your teeth and eating the wrong foods can lead to bacteria and decay. All the students also got new toothbrushes and a dental activity book.
Boardman schools introduce new math curriculum By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Boardman School District has implemented a new math curriculum for students in kindergarten through sixth grade starting at the beginning of the 2016 school year. Jared Cardillo, Boardman Director of Instruction, wanted to implement something that would match the common core standards along with making sure every student is on the same page. If a student transfers from one school to another in Boardman, they should be able to start where they left off at their old school. The new curriculum is structured in a way for the students to have a workbook they can take home and show their parents what they’re working on. There is also a website the students can log on to from another location if they want to practice some of what they are learning. Students in Jeff Hammerton’s fourth-grade class at Robinwood Lane Elementary use dry erase boards at their seats to follow along and solve the
problems that are displayed on the SMART Board at the front of the class. The class starts out with a four-problem warm-up lesson that matches a standard in the common core. At the end of the week, the students will be quizzed over the materials they learned. The new curriculum is about game play. The students are supposed to play an hour of games every week that relate to what they’re learning to allow them to have fun with the material. “The series has you explore, you have to problem solve, think and explain,” said Hammerton. Several of the students have easily picked up the new methods that are being taught. There are a few different methods the students learn and they are able to use the one that they feel the most comfortable with. There was a math night toward the beginning of the school year where the parents came and were introduced to the curriculum. The curriculum has helped keep all of the math teachers teach with a similar structure and keep on schedule with each other.
