Help feed families with Harvest for Hunger Through April 16, customers can help provide food to those in need by tearing off a $1, $5 or $10 coupon at the cash register at any Giant Eagle location in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The donation will be added to their grocery bill.

Non-perishable food items may also be placed in designated bins at the front of the stores. Harvest for Hunger is one of the largest annual, community-wide food and funds drives in the nation, and takes place in 21 counties in northeast Ohio during March and April. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised and food collected in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will remain in these communities to feed local friends and neighbors. The 2016 Harvest for Hunger sponsors are: Giant Eagle, 21 WFMJ and WBCB, The Vindicator, Cumulus Radio Stations Y-103, K105 and HOT 101, and UFCW Local 880. Loghurst museum to host sale Loghurst is hosting a Trunk and Tool sale on April 30 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Each car will pay a fee of $10.

Hospice of the Valley to train new volunteers Hospice of the Valley is hosting training sessions for new companion volunteers to visit hospice patients in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties. Sessions will take place on Tuesdays, April 5 through May 3, from 1-4:30 p.m., at St. Joe’s at the Mall, Sears Concourse Eastwood Mall, located at 5555 Youngstown-Warren Road in Niles. During the training program, volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for patients and their families and how they fit into that team. Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways including companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes and support to the family members.

Volunteers may also assist with indirect patient services such as clerical support, reception desk, mail team and fundraising. Volunteer assignments are made close to the volunteer’s home. All volunteers must wait one year after the loss of a loved one before they can become a volunteer.

Boardman Park is sponsoring a baby sitting class on April 16 from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Georgeanna Parker Activity Center. Students ages 11-15 will learn babysitting basic skills, first aid, rescue breathing and more. The fee for the class is $40 for Boardman Township Residents and $45 for Non-Residents. Mahoning Valley walk benefiting JDRF Take steps to help the Junvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) progressively remove the impact of type 1 diabetes from people’s lives. By joining a team or making a donation to JDRF, you’ll raise money to help fund critical research.

Stadium Drive Elementary hosted its second Gym Night with Dad of the year on March 2 w it h t he students in t he fourth grade.

Gy m Night w it h Dad occurs twice per year, once for second-graders and once for fourth-graders. The event is a long-standing tradition that attracts several students every year.

There are four activities that take place in the school for everyone to participate in; basketball, bowling, a gaga ball pit and a scavenger hunt in the hallway. The gaga pit is one of the activities that students enjoy most. Physical education teacher Kendal Daltorio worked with members of the PTA to put the event together.

“Students come with dad or an uncle or someone and are put in different stations and they do different activities and games throughout the night.

It’s a way to make some good memories with dad,” said Principal Jim Goske.

A little more than one hundred people showed up to the gym night. Everyone gets divided into four groups so each group of people has the op-

portunity to participate in all four activities. PTA members and other volunteers helped worked the night to make sure things ran smoothly and ev-

eryone was having fun.

“I went to school here and I did it when I was in school too.

We’ve been doing it for a long time,” said Goske.

Culp teaches colorful gardening all year long

Fellows Riverside Gardens hosted its 11th annual Winter Garden Seminar on Feb. 20.

The seminar is an all day event presented yearly by the Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown. The theme of the seminar was Four Seasons of Color and the guests were given tips and tricks on how to design a year-long garden landscape to keep their homes colorful.

The seminar consisted of a continental breakfast for the guests, followed by three guest speakers, lunch and door prizes. The three speakers were David Culp, creator of Brandywine Cottage; Susan Cohan, a blogger, designer and landscaper; and Edward Wojciechow sk i of Ed ison Landscape lighting. There was also an author signing, as well as books and DVDs on sale.

Culp has been traveling around the nation and giving lessons on gardens for more than 15 years. His creation, Brandywine Cottage, is in Downingtown, Pa. and is a 2-acre garden that Culp has been working on for 27 years perfecting his gardening and landscaping.

One guest complimented Culp on how when he spoke, as he did it with passion and the

“I don’t think I could stop gardening. I get my energy from the soil outside, it’s what I am.

I’m lucky,” said Culp.

The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown partners with Fellows Riverside Gardens to put on several events throughout the year. The winter seminar is one that guests quickly sign up to attend.

Phantoms fans slide into family fun

The Covelli Centre hosted a Bounce on Ice Party after the Youngstown Phantoms hockey game on Feb. 21.

Austintown Bounce provided three inflatables for the postgame party. They brought in a bounce house that was set up right outside of the rink, an inflatable slide on the ice and a 61-foot obstacle course on the ice. This was the first time the Phantoms had a bounce on the ice event.

“It’s to kind of not only introduce fans to one of our sponsors, but also to give them another reason to come down and enjoy the hockey game then also have some additional family activities,” said Katie Seminara, Director of Game Day Operations for the Phantoms.

Guests got to watch the hockey game and when it was over they had the chance to meet some of the Phantoms players, play on the ice and go on the inflatables. Carly Finlen and Eric Sofranko were united in marriage at 1:30 p.m. Sept.

26, 2015, in a ceremony officiated by the Rev. Terry Hazel at St. Michael Church.

A reception to honor the couple followed at St. Mary’s Assumption Social Center in Youngstown.

The newlyweds are the children of Karen and Gary Finlen and Meg and Frank Sofranko, all of Austintown.

The bride’s sleeveless ball gown was embellished with Swarovski crystals and pearls and featured a sheer illusion neckline that continued to a V-shaped back.

Mackenzie Russell was maid of honor and bridesmaids were Meghan May, Janice Abram, Abby Grimm, Jenna Vallee and Brittany Layne. The attendants wore pewter-colored dresses.

The couple traveled to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, for their honeymoon, and have made their home in Boardman.

Mr. and Mrs. James Spencer of Austintown were honored at Feb. 6 at a family dinner at Luva Bella Winery in Lowellville on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Hosts for the celebration were the couple’s children and their spouses, Bridget and Carl Cramer, Jim and Amy Spencer and Sean and April Spencer, all of Austintown.

Four grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren complete their family.

The former Andrea LaPresta and Mr. Spencer were married Feb. 5, 1966, at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown.

She is a volunteer cook at the West Side Community Center in Youngstown and is a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Girard and American Legion 301.

The 65th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Sloan Jr. of Austintown was celebrated with a family dinner on Feb. 6 at Rachel’s Restaurant.

The couple have three children, Bill (Barbara) Sloan III, Ted (Faye) Sloan and Shirley Sloan, all of Austintown.

Their family is completed by six grandchildren, Bill (Kristen) Sloan IV, Rebecca (Thomas) Alexander, Sheila (Michael) Kapics, Lisa George, Teddi (Ryan) Reese and Kari Sloan, and 10 great-grandchildren, Bill V, Drew and Emma Sloan, Benjamin and Elijah Alexander, Kylie and Macey Kapics, Aleah George, and Ryan and Kaden Reese.

Mr. Sloan and the former Emilia Cua were married at St. Lucy Catholic Church in Campbell on Feb. 3, 1951.

An open house honoring the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Lude of Berlin Center will take place at 2 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Ellsworth Fire Station.

Hosting the event will be the couple’s children and their spouses, Kimberly and Jeff Tuchfarber of Marysville, Ohio, James Lude Jr. of Ellsworth, Kenneth and Leslie Lude of Salem and Jason and Lori Lude of Austintown.

Mr. Lude and the former Linda Jones were married Feb. 14, 1966, at Four Mile Run Christian Church in Austintown.

Mrs. Lude worked as a private-duty nurse with Easter Seals in Boardman until retiring in 2013. She is a member of The Ludes are members of Redeemer the R-Weigh Club.

Her husband retired in 1997 from Lutheran Church.

Their family also includes 14 grandUSS/Kobe in Lorain where he was a roll turner. children and four great-grandchildren.

Hitchcock Woods Learning Center celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday with a Dr. Seuss week Feb. 29 through March 4. They participated in Wacky Wednesday on March 2.

Children came to Hitchcock dressed in wacky clothes and crazy hairstyles to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday. There were several activities throughout the day that the children participated in.

Abbey Loree, a toddler teacher at Hitchock, and Betty Cmil, an administrator, were the ones behind the idea of having a Dr. Seuss celebration during Literacy week. Each day there was a different celebration for the children.

“Usually we paint with our hands, but today we painted with our toes, being wacky. We colored underneath the table on a big sheet of paper, instead of on top,” said Loree.

The children also brought in old and new books to donate to Akron Children’s Hospital. Pattie Welsh, owner and director of Hitchcock, and Cmil are continuous supporters of Akron Children’s Hospital.

“We talked about how some children are in the hospital and the children wanted to donate to them, to give back to the community,” said Welsh.

Welsh hopes to continue doing different activities like this as a quarterly event. It is something the children enjoy participating in, as well as the faculty.
