Class of ‘54 donates towards scholarships, buys new flags They may have graduated more than 60 years ago, but the Bulldog Class of 1954 has not forgotten their alma mater. In fact as many as 30 former classmates, most of them in their 80s, meet twice per month for dinner and breakfast to keep in touch with each other. They host an annual garage sale solely to raise money for scholarships for graduating Poland seniors. That garage sale has gone on for 20 years now. This year they recently wrote a check to supply new flags to fly outside every Poland School building. The scholarship this year will be $2,500.
Help feed families with Harvest for Hunger Through April 16, customers can help provide food to those in need by tearing off a $1, $5 or $10 coupon at the cash register at any Giant Eagle location in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The donation will be added to their grocery bill. Non-perishable food items may also be placed in designated bins at the front of the stores. Harvest for Hunger is one of the largest annual, community-wide food and funds drives in the nation, and takes place in 21 counties in northeast Ohio during March and April. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Ak-
ron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised and food collected in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will remain in these communities to feed local friends and neighbors. The 2016 Harvest for Hunger sponsors are: Giant Eagle, 21 WFMJ and WBCB, The Vindicator, Cumulus Radio Stations Y-103, K105 and HOT 101, and UFCW Local 880. Hospice of the Valley to train new volunteers Hospice of the Valley is hosting training sessions for new companion volunteers to visit hospice patients in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties. Sessions will take place on Tuesdays, April 5 through May 3, from 1-4:30 p.m., at St. Joe’s at the Mall, Sears Concourse Eastwood Mall, located at 5555 Youngstown-Warren Road in Niles. During the training program, volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for patients and their families and how they fit into that team. Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways including companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes and support to the family members. Volunteers may also assist with indirect patient services such as clerical support, reception desk, mail team and fundraising. Volunteer assignments are made close to the volunteer’s home. All volunteers must wait one year after the loss of a loved one before they can become a volunteer. For more information or to register, call 330-549-5902.

Boardman Park is sponsoring a baby sitting class on April 16 from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Georgeanna Parker Activity Center. Students ages 11-15 will learn babysitting basic skills, first aid, rescue breathing and more. The fee for the class is $40 for Boardman Township Residents and $45 for Non-Residents. Poland Dobbins celebrated its annual Father-Daughter Night on Feb. 25. The theme of this year’s Father-Daughter Night was Winter Wonderland Carnival. This is a free event that is sponsored by the PTO every year for the daughters and their fathers or other significant male in their life. The activities set up were ca rniva l activ ities t hemed around winter and snow.
“We had 105 girls come with their dads. There are five stations: a snowball toss, an ice rink relay race, a craft, a Minute to Win it game and a photobooth and DJ, along with dancing, food and desserts,” said Tiffany Martin, a PTO member and organizer of the FatherDaughter Night. The girls and their fathers were put into different groups and each of the groups took turns participating in the stations. For the ice rink relay race, everyone wore plastic bags on
their feet to use as ice skates and skate across the carpet putting snow into containers. The second activity was a snowball toss where one person held a bucket and the other had to toss snowballs in the basket. The crafts that were being made were for the pictures from the photobooth. The craft was like a frame for the photobooth strip pictures. The couples could use different props for their photobooth pictures. The Minute to Win it game was one of the favorites. The
daughters had one hand tied to their father’s hand and they could only use one hand to fill up a container with snow. Food, drinks and desserts were available for the daughters and their fathers when they got hungry and wanted to take a break. A DJ was on hand, playing music for everyone to dance to. The PTO begins organizing the event after Christmas. PTO members and other volunteers help the night run smoothly for the daughters and their fathers.

Poland School Disctrict to host freshmen orientation There will be an orientation meeting for all eighth-graders and their parents who reside in the Poland School District on April 6. Local knitters met at the Poland library on Feb. 25 to work on their current knitting projects and to start new ones. Missy Williams, a Poland librarian, hosts the Sit and Stitch event once every three or four months. It gives people the opportunity to come spend time together, make new friends and
work on different knitting projects. “I started doing it here because Boardman is doing it. I had a bunch people ask if we could do this,” said Williams. A group of four new people attended the event that had recently formed a knitting group. One of the ladies was the only one in the group who knew how to knit and she taught the other

three. Coming to the Poland library event was helpful for the ladies because this allowed them to have Williams help out as well. The women were learning how to begin knitting. They brought their own supplies and listened how to begin a simple project. Williams was working on an infinity scarf. Most of her creations she has been making are for the Christmas in the Woods craft show. The craft show is two weekends long and vendors get a chance to come out and sell their creations. Williams is going to continue having quarterly Sit and Stitch events in hopes of having a bigger following.

Samantha Cox’s transitional kindergarten class at Poland North Preschool participated in their first Olympics event on Feb. 26. The students had their own wreath crowns made out of paper plates and leaves to wear while they participated in different events. The first event was a cotton ball race, followed by a water balloon toss, a bean bag toss, a cone race and finally a bear crawl and crab walk race. The children had to take turns during each event because not all members of the Olympics compete at once. While some students participated, the others were in the audience cheering their classmates on. Some of the events were partner events and others were individual activities. After several rounds of each event, the students made their way back to the classroom for their prizes. All of the students received a medal for the participation in the first ever classroom Olympics. Carly Finlen and Eric Sofranko were united in marriage at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 26, 2015, in a ceremony officiated by the Rev. Terry Hazel at St. Michael Church. A reception to honor the couple followed at St. Mary’s Assumption Social Center in Youngstown. The newlyweds are the children of Karen and Gary Finlen and Meg and Frank Sofranko, all of Austintown. The bride’s sleeveless ball gown was embellished with Swarovski crystals and pearls and featured a sheer illusion neckline that continued to a V-shaped back. Mackenzie Russell was maid of honor and bridesmaids were Meghan May, Janice Abram, Abby Grimm, Jenna Vallee and Brittany Layne. The attendants wore pewter-colored dresses. Phantoms fans slide into family fun By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Covelli Centre hosted a Bounce on Ice Party after the Youngstown Phantoms hockey game on Feb. 21. Austintown Bounce provided three inflatables for the postgame party. They brought in a bounce house that was set up right outside of the rink, an inflatable slide on the ice and a 61-foot obstacle course on the ice. This was the first time the Phantoms had a bounce on the ice event. “It’s to kind of not only introduce fans to one of our sponsors, but also to give them another reason to come down and enjoy the hockey game then also have some additional family activities,” said Katie Seminara, Director of Game Day Operations for the Phantoms. Guests got to watch the hockey game and when it was over they had the chance to meet some of the Phantoms players, play on the ice and go on the inflatables. There was a goal set up on the opposite side of the ice where children could use sticks and pucks to shoot around with the players. “There’s a huge turnout, I

toms games. “You never know what to expect when you do something like this,” said Seminara. The Youngstown Phantoms and Austintown Bounce are looking forward to continue partnering together and creating other events like this to provide more family fun activities.

plained that Blackjack is the male residents’ game of choice and many of the women enjoy “500” Bid. The residents were impressed that the BHS students were happy to spend a Saturday afternoon with them. Fernback said the students showed enthusiasm and were “so helpful” in assisting where a little help was needed.
