Blood Pressure Screening at the library The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will be set up for a blood pressure screening at the Boardman library on April 2 from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

Business workshop presented at the library This workshop provides the basics to understand every section of a business plan through resources of the library. The program will be at the Boardman library on April 21 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. To register, call 330-7448636 and ask for information services or register online using the events calendar. This class is for adults.

Boardman Park’s community garden to start planting While it may still be too early for digging and planting it’s not too early to join the community garden and start planning what fresh vegetables will be on your dinner table this summer. Whether you have a green thumb and are an experienced gardener or whether you are a beginner, community gardens allow you to experience the joys of gardening, promote healthy eating habits and build new relationships with others in the community. The garden is located at the Historic Southern Stables on Washington Boulevard. Registration for the 10 feet by 20 feet garden plots begins on April 2 at the Boardman Park Office, located at 375 Boardman-Poland Road, and are available for a fee of $25. Your fee includes the garden plot, water and periodic classes/instructions on gardening. Due to the limited number of plots available, registration is limited to Boardman residents only.

Women empower attendees at special brunch

B’s Bout ique hoste d a n empowerment presentation called “I Get It From My Muvva,” which featured a panel of prominent African-American women in the beauty profession, on March 17.

Britney Bradley, owner of the boutique, and Eartha Terrell created the event and invited the panelists.

Their brunch had decorations, treats and drinks from other African-American women throughout the community. Each of the panelists introduced themselves and gave the attendees some sample beauty products.

“We want to shift a paradigm of women around here to empower them to follow their own passions,” said Terrell. She and Bradley made the event to help others in the area network and gain inspiration from other professionals in the area.

Terrell and Bradley went to high school together. Though

they followed separate paths, they both ended up having their paths cross again. They have recently began collaborating together, and they plan to have multiple events like this one.

Terrell always had an interest in beauty. After graduating college, she began writing freelance pieces for publications like Sheen Magazine.

She currently still works with b e a u t y pu b l i c a t i on s a nd brands, such as Ebony.com and Camille Rose Naturals, and runs her own blog and website at https://www.muvvaearth.com.

Bradley always had an aptitude for fashion; she had been named best dressed in high school, as Terrell pointed out.

She began selling clothes from a suitcase two years ago to start her own business. She moved her boutique into the space at 6418 Market Street more than a year ago. When she first opened, Terrell wrote a piece on her for a magazine, creating the bond they have now.

They invited Lauren McKenzie of Challenged Society clothing line, Britney Robinson of Nails by Binq, Brenda Rich of Rich Hair Brand (Next Level of Hair) and Royce Earls of Royal Hair Treatment in Columbus to speak as panelists.

Each of the women on the panel owned their own business. They spoke about creating a stronger community, collaborating and creating networks to help foster success. Terrell asked them questions to further their discussion.

The panelists all spoke about motivating, such as Robinson saying “empower and never outshine” and McKenzie telling the attendees to not to “wait for the opportunity to come” and instead “create the opportunity.”

Rich said she wanted to help

build the community back up and be a part of Youngstown’s revitalization.

Earls even brought her intern with her to the event, so she could hear from the other women speaking at the event.

Earls wants to help her intern with everything because she wants to build the next generation to be better.

Terrell, Bradley and the four panelists all stressed the importance of collaboration and reaching out and making connections in business.

To foster these connections, Terrell and Bradley plan to have events like these multiple times throughout the year.

Students hoop it up to raise money for American Heart Association

Glenwood Junior High School had their second annual weeklong Hoops for Heart fundraiser, which culminated in a basketball game between the students and teachers on Feb. 23.

The proceeds of the event all went toward the American Heart Association. The organization offers information on Hoops for Heart and Jump Rope for Heart events nationally. Physical education teachers Danielle Siembida and Nick Liste organized the event for the school.

Principal Bart Smith said the event gave the students the chance to give back to a national organization while having fun for a good cause. Smith played against the students with the team of teachers for the event.

The students created a five person tea m consisting of members from their grade level.

The school had eleven teams overall, with each team having three boys and two girls and a maximum of three basketball players per team.

The teams competed in a tournament throughout the week during the school’s “Spartan Success“ period, which is similar to a study hall period.

The best team in seventh- and

eighth-grade combined to compete against the teachers at the end of the school day at the end of the week.

All students reported to the gymnasium to watch the teachers and students compete. The teams played four quarters, with the seventh grade playing the first and third quarters and the eighth playing the second and fourth. The teachers substituted throughout the game.

Neither team took the game too seriously, and the teachers’ team won.

The students paid for their teams. Individual students paid to compete in a three point tournament where they shot ten basketballs from behind the three point line. They also sold shirts for the event. Others donated for a dress down day where they could dress in sweatpants or pajamas.

Smart money story time at the library Celebrate Money Smart Week with stories, games and a craft at the Boardman library April 25 at 10 a.m. This program is for children of all ages and allowed only one bank per child who is attending the program. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

I read YA book club to meet Adult fans of Young Adult Literature, this book club is for you.

Talk about why you like YA at the Boardman library on April 16 at 6:30 p.m. This month they will be discussing “Winter Girls” by Laurie Halse Anderson.

Father-Daughter dance a continued success

Boardman Park celebrated their 15th annual Father Daughter Dance night on Feb. 9, 10, 15, 16, 17 and 18 at the Lariccia Family Community Center.

The park sold out five of the six nights of the event. They provided food, dancing and pictures for the families.

“It’s a great way for dads to do something special,“ said Recreation Director Karen McCallum about the event. She said the success of the event is a testament for how dads in the area value family.

The park provided a dinner of chicken tenders, pasta, mashed potatoes, rolls and salad and a table with cookies and cupcakes for dessert. In the activities room, a couple could take their own photos at a photo booth and another photo area, as well as go to another area for a professional photo. The park invited performer Joe Sullivan to make balloon art and entertain the young children.

The activities room also housed the dance floor. A DJ played music for the couples to dance. At the end of the event, the fathers and daughters participated in the rose ceremony, where each daughter received a rose and the couples danced to “My Girl“ by The Temptations.

the program. He has attended the six times and said that the fathers always have fun. Over time, the fathers get to know each other and will greet each other at the event. He comes every year for his daughter’s birthday and said his favorite part is the last dance.

McCallum said the dance has become a tradition for many families. Some of the daughters have been to five or six dances.

She also spoke about fathers becoming friends over time, as she noticed that many fathers will start to show up to the event in groups.

ther Kevin are one of the families that have created a tradition around the event. She has gone to the event four years in a row.

Each year, her mother buys her a dress for her birthday to wear at the event. She likes dancing at the event and said she enjoys spending time with her father.

Each night saw around 105 people each night, with some fathers bringing multiple daughters to the event. The program was for daughters between ages 5-12. The Emerging Leaders group from Boardman High School volunteered at the event and helped the Boardman Park staff.

Optimist Club recognizes essay winners

Boardman Optimist Club recently awarded the winners of its annual essay contest with a presentation at Boardman High School’s library. Optimist Club President Sgt. Chuck Hillman and Nancy Hildebrand presented certificates and Barnes and Noble gift-cards to three Boardman High School juniors, Mia Lewis (first place), Christina LaRocca (second place) and Isabella Nordquist (third place). As the first place winner, Lewis’s essay will advance to the Ohio District Level of the contest for a chance to win a $2,500 scholarship. POLICE BLOTTER March 16 Criminal damaging: A Gillian Lane man saw that someone in a vehicle had run over his trash can.

Drugs: Officers in the 7400 block of Glenwood Avenue pulled over and charged Melissa A. Manley, 35, of Boardman, with possessing drug-abuse instruments, related to a search warrant at her Brookfield Avenue residence.

Theft: Struthers police handed Norma J. Esposito, 68, to Boardman authorities.

Esposito, of Riley Avenue, Struthers, was charged with stealing $200 worth of earrings March 11 from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road.

Arrest: A vehicle check on Southern Boulevard led to the arrest of Ashley M. Del Leon, 29, of East Lucius Avenue, Youngstown, on a charge of obstructing official business after police alleged Del Leon had provided intentionally misleading information during a Dec. 30, 2017, investigation of an illegally parked vehicle at a township bowling establishment.

Criminal mischief: A Bristlewood Drive man reported several bags of leaves, sticks and other debris had been dumped and scattered in his yard.

Drugs: A traffic stop near Southern Boulevard resulted in a felony drug-abuse charge against Jarvis S. Sanders, 37, of Gordon Street, Campbell. Sanders had in his pocket a bag that contained Xanex pills with no prescription, a report said.

Theft: A man discovered a hammer drill and a sweeper missing from his Shields Road apartment.

Theft: Police charged Mariah L. Jordan, 25, of West Heights Boulevard, Youngstown, with intentionally failing to self-scan $85 worth of baby clothing while in Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Theft: Michelle L. O’Donahue, 44, of East Midlothian Boulevard, Youngstown, was charged in the theft of $509 worth of merchandise that included clothing from Kohl’s.

March 17 Arrest: Officers responded to a possible underage party on Alverne Drive before charging a 17-year-old Poland boy with obstructing official business and resisting arrest.

Citation: Authorities manning an Operating a Vehicle Impaired checkpoint at Market Street and Overhill Road cited Javone Q.M. Provitt, 21, of Wick Street Southeast, Warren, on a charge of having a bag of suspected marijuana.

Drugs: Alonzo J. Clark, 22, of West Avondale Avenue, Youngstown, faced a felony charge of trafficking in drugs after he was stopped in a sobriety checkpoint at Market Street and Overhill Road. Clark had a bag with eight individually wrapped bags of suspected marijuana he admitted he sells for $10 per bag, police alleged.

Assault/aggravated menacing: A township man told police that during an altercation at a South Avenue big-box store, another man pushed him, then threatened to kill the accuser, apparently after the victim cursed and pointed his finger at the second man’s wife who had stepped between them.

Theft: A Poland woman reported a $160 pair of her child’s shoes was stolen from near a concession area at a Tiffany Boulevard business.

Burglary/auto theft: To an apartment in the 5100 block of Shields Road via the front door, from which a series of personal checks was taken. The burglar also reportedly stole the victim’s 2005 Toyota Corolla.

Citation: Authorities at an OVI checkpoint at Market Street and Overhill Road cited Tyree M. Tarver, 20, of Ohio Avenue, Youngstown, on a marijuana-possession charge.

Criminal damaging: After pulling him over near Brookwood Road, officers took Javon L. Williams, 25, into custody. Williams, of Lakewood Avenue, Youngstown, was wanted on an Austintown warrant charging him with criminal damaging.

Drugs: After stopping their car near Doral Drive, authorities charged Joshua D. Baker, 35, and Eileen M. Schmidt, 47, both of Park Avenue, East Palestine, with drug abuse as well as possessing dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia. Baker, who also was wanted on a warrant, had a bag with one over-the-counter pill for which he had no prescription, a hypodermic needle and a spoon with burn marks common in drug use; Schmidt had two suspected crack-cocaine pipes, two paper bindles of suspected cocaine and a bag of suspected cocaine, police alleged.

Theft: A man discovered his wallet missing while patronizing a South Avenue grocery store.

Burglary: Someone forcibly entered a home in the 1800 block of Lynn Mar Avenue via a rear door, though it was undetermined if anything was taken.

Domestic violence: Authorities phone booked Justin J. Harrison, 30, of Saranac Avenue, Youngstown, on charges of domestic violence and making domestic-violence threats after his girlfriend alleged Harrison had assaulted and threatened her at a restaurant just off U.S. Route 224.

Arrest: Police on Market Street pulled over then charged Roger A. Kennedy of Vienna Avenue, Niles, with operating a vehicle impaired. Kennedy, 56, registered a 0.084 blood-alcohol content, which is slightly higher than Ohio’s 0.08 legal intoxication limit, a report stated.

Breaking and entering: Someone entered a shed in the 900 block of Pearson Circle, though it appeared nothing was stolen.

Citation: Police responded to an argument at a Willow Drive residence, where they wrote a minor-misdemeanor citation charging Cindy J. Campbell, 52, of Willow, Boardman, with disorderly conduct. Campbell, who was intoxicated, caused a scene, a report said.

March 18 Arrest: Mill Creek MetroParks authorities arrested William F. Farragher, 63, of Griswold Drive, Boardman, on a charge of operating a vehicle impaired.

Farragher was then transported to the Boardman Police Department to be given a Breathalyzer test, but refused to provide a breath sample, a report showed.

Burglary: To an apartment in the 5500 block of West Boulevard through a rear sliding-glass door, though it appeared nothing was missing.

Drugs: Sheldon M. McCallum of Peace Avenue, Warren, was charged with drug abuse (marijuana) and possessing drug paraphernalia after having been pulled over near Market Street.

McCallum, 27, had a bag of suspected marijuana and a scale, a report said.

Drugs: Police conducting a traffic stop near Indianola Road charged Ryan M. Horschar, 21, of East Main Street, Washingtonville, with possessing drug-abuse instruments after alleging Horschar had a hypodermic needle and a bowl with suspected marijuana residue.

March 19 Arrest: Officers were dispatched to a business in the 600 block of Boardman-Canfield Road to handle a complaint regarding a possibly intoxicated man, where they charged Terry L. Lascola Jr., 35, with disorderly conduct. Lascola, of Donley Drive, New Castle, Pa., engaged in loud, disruptive behavior, then failed to desist, authorities alleged.

Assault: An Afton Avenue woman alleged her boyfriend had grabbed and choked her during an argument about their relationship.

Ursuline Center shows community love

The Ursuline Center hosted its eleventh annual Valentine’s Dinner on Feb. 13 to raise funds for the Ursuline Center Ministries.

The proceeds for the dinner went toward the Ursuline Sisters HIV/AIDS, the Beatitude House and Ursuline’s preschool and kindergarten programs.

The night included dinner, dessert and entertainment.

Mary Assion, the chairperson for the event, said they normally have the dinner on Valentine’s Day, but the holiday fell on Ash Wednesday this year, so they decided to have the dinner the

night before.

Each attendee paid $26 for the event. The Center had a number of door prizes and a 50/50 raffle at the door. The couples then sat at their designated table and began eating the fruit and cracker appetizers and getting drinks, which included soda, coffee, wine and water. The servers then gave the couples salads between the appetizers and dinner.

The Broad Street Diner in Canfield provided the dinner for the event. The dinner included Chicken Fran ßaise, pasta, green beans and rolls. After the dinner, the servers handed out a chocolate mousse dessert donated by Linnea’s in Kent. Sister

Austintown’s Party On store donated balloons, centerpieces and decorations for the event.

The pink and red decorations fit with Valentine’s Day theme.

Those at the dinner continued the theme in their wardrobes, many wearing red dresses or ties.

The night ended with entertainment. Boardman’s Singers and Chorale entertained the attendees at the dinner. The Singers, an all-female chorus, performed first, then the mixedgender chorale sang. Linda Smrek directed both choirs.

Pinwheels for Prevention community event set The 13th annual Pinwheels for Prevention community event is slated for April 13 at 1 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Boardman, located at 7410 South Ave. Pinwheels for Prevention is offered in conjunction with National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month in April. Its aim is to raise awareness of the importance and the need for families and communities to work together to be vigilant and report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect. The annual event is coordinated by Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley’s Child Advocacy Center

and Mahoning County Children Services.

The program features keynote speaker David Kohout, founder of Talk Is Cheap and author of “Standing in the Presence of Greatness: Discover Seven Real Life Accounts of Greatness Along My Journey Thus Far,” the Boardman High School jazz band and the awarding of the annual Community Spotlight Award. The Spotlight Award is presented to an individual or organization who has demonstrated continued commitment and community service to Mahoning County children.

“Everybody’s responsible for speaking up on behalf of abused or neglected children,” said Andrea Mistovich, Child Advocacy Center coordinator, Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. “If you have even an inkling, speak out. You might be the only one who does.”

Theft: Terry L. Carter, 58, of West Ravenwood Avenue, Youngstown, was charged in the theft of seven packages of men’s socks from Burlington Coats, 529 Boardman-Canfield Road.

Domestic violence: Christian M.R. Elford, 21, of Leighton Avenue, Boardman, was charged with the crime after his fiancée alleged that during an argument, Elford had grabbed her arm and shoved her into a wall. He also ripped a phone from the accuser’s hands as she tried to call 911, a report showed.

Theft: Officers charged Roy R. Mauro, 80, of Grandview Road, Lake Milton, with stealing 11 items, including pork chops, from Marc’s, 7121 Tiffany Blvd.

Theft/forgery: A Roche Way woman discovered a man had stolen and forged three of her checks, evidently to pay his bills.

Theft: A man reportedly stole $200 worth of baby clothing from Burlington Coats.

Theft: An Arden Boulevard woman alleged her former boyfriend removed three firearms from a safe in her residence.

Arrest: Oksana K. Wajda, 28, who listed Youngstown addresses on Cambridge and Overland avenues, was arrested during a traffic stop on Southern Boulevard.

She was wanted on a probation-violation warrant from Liberty Township.

Stolen property: A customer found a purse that was left at Home Depot, 7001 Southern Blvd., and reportedly contained Ohio identification cards thought to have been stolen from several people.

Happily Ever After Zetts’ 50th honored with surprise party POLAND

Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Zetts of Poland were honored for their 50th wedding anniversary at a surprise party Sept. 23, 2017, at the home of their daughter in Canfield.

The celebration was hosted by their children, Valerie (Todd) Commons of Canfield, Laurie Zetts of Boardman and Rosemary Zetts of Las Vegas.

Three grandchildren complete their family.

The former Antoinette Trimble and Mr. Zetts were married Sept. 30, 1967, at Holy Family Church in Poland, where the couple are members.

Mrs. Zetts was a book clerk and switchboard operator at First Place Bank in Youngstown. She retired in 1999.

Mr. Zetts retired in 2001 from First Place Bank where he was a loan officer. He works part-time as a courier for Valley Care. He also is a member of St. John the Baptist Church, its men’s club

Francesca Lucia Colella and Frank Anthony Catalano, both of Poland, were united in marriage at 2 p.m. Jan. 20. The ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Michael Cariglio at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica. A reception took place that evening at Stambaugh Auditorium.

The bride is a daughter of Mary Colella of Boardman and the late Thomas Colella.

The groom is a son of Gemma Catalano of Poland and the late Frank Catalano.

The bride wore a fit-and-flare gown trimmed with ivory lace appliques and beaded straps.

Katherine Very was matron of honor, and Ivy Poma was maid of honor.

Bridesmaids were Madeline Pagan and choir. He is a member of Baseball and Natalie Miller, sisters of the bride; Old-Timers and played baseball for the Adreann Loxton, sister of the groom; Stuttgart Chiefs while serving in the Amanda Mason; Andria DiBacco; and U.S. Army.

McCormick, Lukach nuptials set for late June Bristolville

Donald and Paige McCormick of Bristolville are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Haley McCormick, to Matthew Lukach, both of Howland.

Mr. Lukach is a son of Raymond and Mary Beth Lukach of Boardman.

The ceremony will take place June 30 at Wildare United Methodist Church in Cortland with a reception following that evening at DiVieste Banquet Center in Warren. Invitations will be issued for both events.

The bride-elect obtained a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Kent State University where she is pursuing a master’s degree. She is a registered nurse in the intensive care unit of an area hospital.

The prospective groom graduated from KSU with a master’s degree in education and is a job training coordinator at Trumbull Career & Technical Center.

Mrs. Catalano graduated from Gannon University, Erie, Pa., with a bachelor’s degree in health science and a master’s degree in physician assistant science. She is a physician’s assistant and works for Alteon Health in the Mercy Health St. Elizabeth emergency departments in Youngstown, Boardman and Austintown and Mercy Health – Boardman Walk-In Care.

Mr. Catalano attended Youngstown State University and is a self-employed contractor in Struthers.

The couple honeymooned in Antigua and reside in Poland.

Mr. and Mrs. Koenig celebrate golden jubilee canfield

Mr. and Mrs. James Koenig of Canfield celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a family party last summer in Lake Milton. The event was hosted by their children.

Mr. Koenig married the former Patricia Schell on July 14, 1967, in Youngstown.

The Koenigs’ children are Matt (Susanne) Koenig of Youngstown and Mike Koenig of Boardman. Three grandchildren complete their family.

Mrs. Koenig worked in the clerical department for Trumbull/Mahoning Medical Group in Austintown until retiring in 2004.

Mr. Koenig was a welder for 30 years for General Motors in Lordstown. He also served in the U.S. Army from 196769.
