Turning your house into a smart home By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

Community members recently learned how to turn their houses into a smart home at the Boardman library. Librarian Cindy Christani hosted her first event on April 18 where she taught community members how to hook up their smart voice assistants in their houses. “It really is amazing what they can do,” Christani said. “You can ask them almost anything.” The event featured the Amazon Alexa, which Christani uses in her own home. “You can connect it to almost everything in your home, it really makes a huge difference,” Christani said. During the event Christani presented on the Alexa, going through the history of the smart voice assistants. She explained the popularity of different assistants and the different tools you can use with the assistant. Christani brought smart light bulbs, switches and other tools that can be connected to an Alexa and controlled through the device. She showed devices

connected to her own home, including a video doorbell and an automated dog feeder. “I can set times, set my alarm, play music throughout my house and even call my family to dinner,” Christani said. “It really is endless what you can do.” Christani did explain that when purchasing items it is important to check which items are compatible with which

smart assistant speakers. She also suggested the best place to start buying items to upgrade your home is Amazon. “It’s great to ask what you want your home to do for you,” Christani said. “It’s the best place to start. Soich, 38, and Daniel A. Telisman, 28, both of Glendale Avenue, Boardman, after $165 worth of merchandise that included a pair of pants was stolen from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road. Telisman also faced two drug-related charges when, police alleged, a needle and a spoon with burn marks common in drug use were found in their vehicle. In addition, Soich was wanted on felony warrants charging her with possessing heroin and cocaine. Identity fraud: A Glen Park Road man found two fraudulent food-delivery transactions that totaled $96 had been made with his debit card. Theft: A Wolosyn Circle woman discovered two money-order checks that totaled $560 had been removed from a community mailbox in her apartment building. Theft: J’siyha D.M. Cobb, 18, was charged with theft and given a minor-misdemeanor citation charging drug abuse (marijuana) after a T-shirt and a pair of pants were taken from Macy’s in Southern Park Mall. Cobb, of West Delason Avenue, Youngstown, had on her person a small bag that contained 0.8 grams of suspected marijuana, a report showed. Unauthorized use of a vehicle: A Tudor Lane woman said another woman took her son’s 1997 Acura and failed to return it within an agreed-upon 48-hour period. Threats: Patrick F. Klingensmith, 45, of Market Street, Boardman, was booked on a charge of making domestic-violence threats after his wife alleged that during an escalating argument related to fixing a kitchen sink, Klingensmith threatened her partly by slamming his fists into and damaging her car’s front windshield. Theft: Police charged Melissa R. ReynoldsAnderson, 43, of state Route 45, Lisbon, with theft and possessing drug paraphernalia after accusing her of stealing $52 worth of property, including Easter candy, from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive. Reynolds-Anderson also had a rolled piece of aluminum foil with burn marks that was used as a suspected crackcocaine pipe, along with a straw containing a powder residue, a report indicated. April 12 Arrest: Officers investigated several suspicious juveniles near a Market Street gas station before charging Devonte J. Turner, 24, with obstructing official business after alleging

he provided another man’s Social Security number as police sought to identify him. Turner, who listed addresses on Friendship Avenue in Boardman and Glenwood Avenue in Youngstown, also was wanted on a Niles warrant. Arrest: Police answered a complaint regarding someone panhandling for money at a Hillman Way bank, where they took into custody James E. Allen, 38, of West Judson Avenue, Youngstown, upon discovering he was wanted on a felony parole-violation charge. Theft by deception: A Squirrel Hill Drive woman told police a friend had sent her a Facebook message claiming she could be offered $150,000 from a government benefits program before the accuser spoke with a man who persuaded her to buy a $500 Amazon gift card and provide him with the routing number, then said a large amount of money would be automatically deposited into her account. Nevertheless, an official with a local credit union informed the woman it was an online scam, and the account was frozen. Arrest: A traffic stop in the 800 block of Indianola Road resulted in the arrest of Lakisha M. Chandler of Early Road, Youngstown, on a charge of operating a vehicle impaired. Chandler, 24, registered a 0.093 blood-alcohol content, slightly more than Ohio’s 0.08 legal intoxication limit, a report stated. Students celebrate their special people By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com

During every Thursday in March, West Boulevard celebrates the special person in students lives with a special person lunch. According to Principal Alphonse Cervello, the event has been going on annually for 15 years. “It’s a fun day for kids to be able to invite someone special,” Cervello said. He explained that the event has one rule, that children have to hug or kiss their special person and say thank you. “We always make sure we tell their guest, don’t let them go back to class before they say thank you,” Cervello said. Each Thursday, a different grade invites their special person to lunch. Cervello said 95 percent of students invite someone, but for the students who don’t they get paired with a special person within the school. “A teacher or two will sit with them, or I will sit down and have lunch with them,” Cervello said. “So everyone gets the chance to enjoy the day.” Students invited their parents, aunts and uncles, or even friends of the family to the special event. “The students and the guests thoroughly enjoy it,” Cervello said. “It’s a great tradition.” Guests were welcome to bring their own lunches, or

for their team. “We are never the type to ask for stuff,” Doug said. “So when she brought it up at our last parent teacher conference we were blown away, as soon as she told us about it, it was like Christmas for us.” Wright said she had the idea to do a big celebration for World Down Syndrome Day after getting to know Liam. “He just touched my heart and I just wanted to do everything I could to make everyone aware and understand what down syndrome is,” Wright said. To raise money for the walk Wright sold T-shirts and took donations. On March 21, students were also able to pay a dollar to wear crazy socks, the proceeds from which were also donated to the walk. In total, the school raised $770 for the Levendosky’s family team. “I had asked them if there is something they wanted to donate money to, and they said it was just us and the buddy walk. So we just raised what ever we could,” Wright said. “Now a bunch of our staff members want to join their team as well.” Along with raising money, Wright organized a viewing of a video about down syndrome for every class in Robinwood. “The biggest thing is this video that is going on,” Wright said. “I really wanted everyone to understand what down syndrome is. Today kids need to learn that everyone is different but we are all the same really. We all want to make friends, be accepted and respected.”

Kindergarten teacher Candace Wright sat with Liam Levendosky on March 21 as students watched a video for World Down Syndrome Day.

As a special surprise to the class and to Liam, Wright was also able to organize a video of children’s music artist Jack Hartmann greeting the class. “My class is a huge fan of Jack Hartmann, so to have him say yes and send us a video saying hello was huge for them,” Wright said. Along with the video, Hartmann sent a signed CD of his music for Liam to the school. “I just think a lot of people don’t know what down syndrome is and once you give them that knowledge they can really embrace it and accept it,” Wright said. “I mean there is so much negativity in the world and when you see something positive you really want to embrace it and celebrate it.”
