ABWA meeting to be April 11 The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will meet on April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at A La Cart in Canfield. Dinner will be southern baked chicken, roast beef, potato au gratin, peas and carrots, salad, Jello, cole slaw and dessert.

The cost is $18. The speaker for the evening will be Chief Don Hutchinson of the Cardinal Fire Department, to speak on the drug problem in Ohio.

BPJWL April meeting to be April 3 The next meeting of the GFWC Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on April 3 at 7 p.m. at Glenellen, located at 9661 Market St. in North Lima.

League members will be preparing for a raffle based on the Ohio Lottery.

Tickets are $5 and are available from any league member. Kirsten Weaver will be the guest speaker that evening. Her program will be about her trip to Jamaica with Therapy Missions – USA Mission Team. They are going to a Mustard Seed Community in Jamaica to do Occupational Therapy work with adults with Developmental Disabilities. Hostesses for the month are Joyce Martin, Sperry Rongone and Chery Smaldino.

Knitting Guild meeting to be April 11 The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A brief program on Knitting Slang will be presented and members are encouraged to bring and show their knitted Herringbone Stitch pillows. Smart Money Picture Bingo Celebrate Smart Money Week at the Boardman library on April 25 at 7 p.m. and April 26 at 10 a.m. with fun and prizes for the whole family. Picture Bingo for all ages. Lego mindstorms robots, part one Discover how to build, program and test Lego Mindstorms Robots at the Boardman library on April 13 at from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Children will work through the stages of building and programming the robots. Meet Puma Thurman! She is a black Domestic Shorthair cat who is estimated to be 2-years and 1-month-old.

She arrived at Angels for Animals on Feb. 20. She is currently in foster care, but the staff at Angels is taking applications and will call potential adoptive parents once Puma Thurman comes in. This adorable little guy is named Boo Boo! His breed is unknown, but he is black and white in color. He is estimated to be about 1-year-old. Playtime at your library Prepare for kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on April 12 at 10 a.m. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten. This is for children ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

Bonding with babies and books This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library every Tuesday in April at 10 a.m.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s Join the Boardman library on April 5 and 19 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Boats that float Hear stories and launch your boat in a one-hour story time for children of all ages at the Boardman library on April 18 at 7 p.m.

The boats will be launched outside in the outdoor play area, or indoors if raining. A family program for children of all ages; preschoolers must attend with an adult.

Read to some bunny Come be a book buddy and read to a licensed therapy rabbit from the Ohio Affiliate of the Bunnies in Baskets at the Boardman library on April 8 at 10 a.m. Schoolage children are welcome to sit and read out loud for 20 minutes.

Fiction writing workshop Join the Boardman library on April 19 at 7 p.m. to learn about personal narratives and what the difference is between telling a story and showing a story. Then write your own personal narrative and share it. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

U.S. Fleet Forces Band hosts free concert

Several guests braved the weather to see the U.S. Fleet Forces Band Wind Ensemble put on a free, public concert at Boardman Performing Arts Center on March 13.

The U.S. Fleet Forces Band, known as “The Finest of the Fleet,” is the musical representat ive for Com ma nder, U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, Va. The performance featured a variety of musical styles and different ensemble performances. Some songs featured members of the band singing.

The band prov ides musical support for ships, military bases and community events throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Ohio River Valley areas.

The Wind Ensemble was under the direction of Master Chief Musician Joseph Rundall for most of the show. Special guest Pat Haas directed a few songs toward the end of the performance.

The Wind Ensemble is the largest of the U.S. Fleet Forces Band’s ensembles. The music selections performed ranged f rom t r ad it iona l m i l it a r y marches and patriotic favorites to works from the wind band literature.

Chief Musician Steve Pendel, who plays keyboards, was the emcee of the night. Pendel is a native of Farrell, Pa., whose family has moved to the Mahoning Valley area. Pendel spoke between performances giving information on the pieces that the ensemble performed.

The U.S. Fleet Forces Band performed at the Boardman St. Patrick’s Day parade the day before the concert at the BPAC, giving Mahoning Valley community members an opportunity to see them perform twice.

Area high school seniors to be honored at YWCA Young Women with Bright Futures awards

Boardman High School places 10th in Speech League state tournament There’s nothing humorous about being a State Champion – or is there?

For Canfield High School senior Zachery Bernat it’s all about the laughs.

He is the state champion in the Humorous Interpretation category.

There were more than 1,000 students from 84 teams competing at the 2017 Ohio High

School Speech League State Tournament hosted by Olmsted Falls and Berea-Midpark on March 3-4. Canfield finished in tenth place overall.

“Canfield has finished in the Top 10 in Ohio eight times in the past nine years,” Head Coach Jeremy Hamilton said.

Orchestra program makes history OUR TOWN Once again the Boardman orchestras made history for Boardman High School and its orchestra program by bringing home superior (I) ratings for both symphony and chamber orchestra ensembles at the Ohio Music Education Association State Orchestra Adjudicated event on Feb. 24 in Hudson.

The 90-member Boardman symphony orchestra has the longest string of unbroken superior ratings, since 1973, of any orchestra in the state of Ohio.

The chamber orchestra was awarded a superior (I) rating this year as well.

The 30-member Boardman chamber orchestra once again received a superior (I) rating, a rating they have been awarded every time they have performed at state contest for the past 28 years.

The Boardman orchestras will participate in the Invitational National Music Competition held in Toronto, Canada this April. The annual spring Neighbors | Submitted concert is set for May 17.

Stadium Elementary students in Brittany Krestel’s and Jessica Kohler’s second-grade classes just finished the marble track science project. First they collected cereal boxes, paper towel rolls and other leftovers from home. Then, they designed and created a track that would carry a marble from start to finish. The project addresses the Physical Science Standard: PS.1 Forces change the motion of an object. Shaving heads to raise money for childhood cancer research

Dozens of volunteers shaved their heads for the St. Baldrick’s Head Shaving event took place on March 11 outside of the Austintown O’Donold’s Irish Pub and Grille.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a nationwide volunteer-powered charity that is committed to funding the research of childhood cancer. The head-shaving event began as a challenge between businessmen and has

grown from one event in 2000 to currently more than 1,200 events.

The events take place in pubs, restaurants, schools, churches and several other places.

Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has donated more then $200 million to support research making the foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants.

This is the sixth year that the St. Baldrick’s event has taken place. This year there were 32 people registered to shave their heads and there are around 20-

“We have a great community following. We’re building an event that people look forward to and all that does is help raise money,” said Eric Broz, volunteer event coordinator.

Broz r u ns Dr i n k Up Youngstown and used his connections and social media marketing skills to help get the word out about the event. St. Baldrick’s Foundation is set up to be social media marketing with Facebook and Twitter integration.

There were more than 60 baskets donated for the basket raf-

fle, paintings being sold by Ron Moore, Jr. and many other items being sold to help raise money.

Sports Clips Haircuts is a national sponsor of St. Baldrick’s, but this is the first year the Sports Clips in Poland has participated in the Austintown event. The Poland location has been raising money at their store to donate to St. Baldrick’s prior to coming to the event. The stylists volunteered to come in and shave the heads of the guests who came in.

“It’s a very emotional experience. It’s amazing to see people raising so much money to help kids,” said Stephanie Thomas,

assistant manager of Sports Clips in Poland.

The event is an all volunteer event. People from all around the area volunteer their time to help raise money for the foundation.

“I love this charity and I love this event,” said Broz.

Aside from the head-shaving event, there was a 5k and live entertainment for the guests to participate in and enjoy.

Last year St. Baldrick’s in Austintown raised more than $19,000 and this year Broz is looking to raise around $22,000.

Happily Ever After Twin sisters are planning weddings CANFIELD

The parents of Alyssa Pool and Ryan Abraham, both of Cleveland Heights, are announcing their engagement.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Jake and Diane Pool, and the prospective groom is the son of Tim and Beth Abraham, all of Canfield.

The ceremony is set for 1:30 p.m.

Aug. 12 at St. Michael Church. A reception will take place at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center in Boardman. Invitations will be issued for both events.

Miss Pool graduated from Ohio Northern University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She is a registered nurse at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Cleveland.

Mr. Abraham graduated from Ohio Northern University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s of professional practice in accounting. He is an audit associate for PricewaterhouseCoopers, Cleveland.

Jack and Diane Pool of Canfield are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Alexa Pool of Cleveland, and Nick Martinek of Cleveland Heights. The parents of the groom are Frank Martinek of Broadview Heights, Ohio, and the late Debi Martinek.
