CHC kindergartners celebrate Dr. Seuss By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
In honor of children’s author Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2, kindergarten students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School celebrated w it h va riet y of themed days the week of Feb. 27. Monday was Crazy Hat Day, Tuesday was Crazy Socks Day to honor “The Fox in Socks” and Wednesday was Wacky Wednesday during which the students were encouraged to dress wacky. On Thursday the children were to wear green and made and tasted green eggs and ham and on Friday the students were to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. Tammy Sabrin’s kindergarten class, dressed in green, made green eggs and ham in their classroom on March 2. While the focus of the project was the book “Green Eggs and Ham,” Sabrin also taught the students how to crack eggs and the process of cooking scrambled eggs. Sabrin used both white and brown eggs and asked the children if they thought the eggs were the same on the inside. “These eggs are different colors on the outside, but do you think they are the same on the inside? When we crack them, you will see that they are the same on the inside, just like us. Some of us are different on the outside, but we are all the same

on the inside,” Sabrin said. Each student had the opportunity to crack an egg into the skillet. When all the eggs were in the skillet, Sabrin stirred them, and explained that the heat cooks the eggs. She encouraged the students to watch the eggs turn from a “gooey” state into a more solid state of scrambled eggs. As she stirred the eggs in the skillet, she asked the students how they were going to turn the
eggs green. With many suggestions called out, such as frosting, Sabrin picked up a bottle of green food coloring and added 10 drops to the eggs. To the amazement of the students, the eggs turned green right in front of their eyes. When the eggs were a bright green color, Sabrin mixed in the ham. She then dished out a portion for each student to taste. As she surveyed the students,
the reviews were good, with just a couple students not liking the eggs. Overall, the students gave a thumbs up to the green eggs and ham. When everyone had tried the eggs, several asked for seconds, which Sabrin gladly served up. “Now you can go home and help your mom or dad cook green eggs and ham for dinner tonight,” Sabrin told her students.

Shaving heads to raise money for childhood cancer research By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Dozens of volunteers shaved their heads for the St. Baldrick’s Head Shaving event took place on March 11 outside of the Austintown O’Donold’s Irish Pub and Grille. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a nationwide volunteer-powered charity that is committed to funding the research of childhood cancer. The head-shaving event began as a challenge between businessmen and has grown from one event in 2000 to currently more than 1,200 events. The events take place in pubs, restaurants, schools, churches
and several other places. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has donated more then $200 million to support research making the foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. This is the sixth year that the St. Baldrick’s event has taken place. This year there were 32 people registered to shave their heads and there are around 2030 people who walk-in the day of. There are people from the fivecounty area. “We have a great community following. We’re building an event that people look forward to and all that does is help raise money,” said Eric Broz, volunteer
event coordinator. Broz r u ns Dr i n k Up Youngstown and used his connections and social media marketing skills to help get the word out about the event. St. Baldrick’s Foundation is set up to be social media marketing with Facebook and Twitter integration. There were more than 60 baskets donated for the basket raffle, paintings being sold by Ron Moore, Jr. and many other items being sold to help raise money. Sports Clips Haircuts is a national sponsor of St. Baldrick’s, but this is the first year the Sports Clips in Poland has participated in the Austintown event. The Poland location has
been raising money at their store to donate to St. Baldrick’s prior to coming to the event. The stylists volunteered to come in and shave the heads of the guests who came in. “It’s a very emotional experience. It’s amazing to see people raising so much money to help kids,” said Stephanie Thomas, assistant manager of Sports Clips in Poland. The event is an all volunteer event. Jeremy Hamilton, the voice of the Canfield Cardinals basketball team, welcomed Canfield High School students to the Spirit Week pep rally on Feb. 16.
CHS shows their school spirit By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Students at Canfield High School wrapped up Spirit Week with a pep rally in the gymnasium on Feb. 16. The students showed their Cardinal Pride throughout the week with class themes, including Ghosts of Poland’s Past for the freshman class, Freeze Out the Dogs for the sophomores, Jacked Juniors for the juniors and Last of the 90s for the seniors. Each day of the week also had a theme, with Monday being Class Color Day during which students were asked to wear their class’ designated color, Tuesday was We Love Our Cards Day, during which students could wear a red T-shirt with a heart on it, Wednesday students were asked to dress to represent their class theme and Thursday was red and black day. The entire week was a competition between classes to see which had the most school spirit, with the results announced at the pep rally. Jeremy Hamilton, the voice of the Canfield Cardinals basketball team, welcomed the students to the pep rally and began the rally by introducing senior members of the school’s winter sports teams. Seniors from the boys basketball team, cheerleaders, girls and boys swim teams, girls basketball team, wrestling, hockey and boys bowling were introduced to the cheering crowd.
Each class was tasked with coming up with a game to play at the pep rally, with the freshman class having members of each class play Mummy Dance and the sophomore class having members of each class playing Snowball Dodge Ball. The junior class had members of each class participate in a relay race and the senior class had members of each class play Musical Chairs with a 90s twist. In between games, the Canfield High School cheerleaders entertained the crowd and got them pumped up for the Canfield versus Poland basketball game scheduled for Friday night. Big Red, the Canfield High School mascot, got the students pumped up by leading a victory cheer for each class, giving the students a chance to out-cheer their peers. Throughout the pep rally, Hamilton kept the students updated on the spirit competition scores between the classes, and proclaimed the seniors the winner of the competition at the end of the rally. “The seniors win the spirit competition with 31 points,” Hamilton announced. “Also, please take some time to thank you class advisors today. This pep rally would not be possible without them. We also thank the administration for their support.” To close the pep rally, Hamilton led the students in singing the school’s Alma Mater.
