Students spring into musical performance By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland Union Elementary School kindergartners dressed as their favorite character to sing in the annual kindergarten concert on March 8 at Poland Seminary High School. The kindergarten students have been preparing for months to show off their singing skills to friends and families. Music
instructor Dean Wilson works with the students to teach them not only words to songs, but how to read music. The performance gives the students an opportunity to show the audience what they have learned during their music class at school. The students not only learned songs, but they also learned a dance that went along with one of the songs. There were also two students were se-
lected to come to the front of the stage to sing a solo during one of the songs toward the end of the concert. To show how proud and happy the staff at Poland Union was of the students, there were JibJab videos created with Principal Mike Masucci and all of the kindergarten teachers. The videos were shown to the audience during the concert while the students prepared for their next
song. All six kindergarten classes helped decorate plates that were raffled off at the end of the night. The kindergarten students also showed their appreciation for Wilson by giving him a gift when they finished their performance. Pat Williams, PSHS broadcast teacher, recorded the performance and will put it on the Poland Union website for everyone to watch.

March was the perfect time for a “Barnyard Buddies” visit from Brenda from Mill Creek Metroparks. The children from Poland After School Program were excited to see an 8-week-old goat, chicks and a bunny up close. Each child was able to pet the animals. Brenda also talked about the bigger barnyard animals that were too big to bring for show and tell. Poland After School currently has 120 pre-K through fifth-graders registered this year. The program is located at the former North Elementary building. Dobbins third-grade students help spread kindness into the community by making Valentine’s Day cards for the residents of Sunrise Assisted Living in Poland. Stephanie Davis, a Youngstown State University student teacher, has been working with third-grade teacher Marsha Walkama and her students. Poland has recently celebrated the Start with Hello week in the school district and the schools were trying to bring that kindness into the community.
Davis and Walkama worked with the third-grade students to create Valentine’s Day cards for the residents of Sunrise Assisted Living in Poland. Two students, Tim Spellig and Elliana Thompson, were selected to go to Sunrise Assisted Living and deliver the cards to the residents. Spellig and Thompson had the opportunity to meet some of the residents and deliver the cards to them personally. This community project allowed the students to show the community things they are doing in the school and help spread kindness and awareness.

Shepherd celebrates opening of new addition By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Poland Shepherd of the Valley celebrated the grand opening of their new 26,000 square foot skilled nursing and rehabilitation center on Feb. 12. The new unit was designed with the residents in mind and tailored to suit to their needs. The new unit includes three wings with 32 bedrooms, family centers, an outdoor patio, a happy hour lounge and a chapel. All of the bedrooms are private and have a private full bathroom. One of the most anticipated rooms is the therapy suite. The suite includes a pool with a treadmill in it for aquatic therapy, different gym equipment and other
equipment to help with physical therapy treatment and rehabilitation. Leroy’s Lounge has been one of the favorites among residents and staff. The lounge was named after resident Leroy Bartelmay, who had passed away. LeRoy’s brother, Merton, had decided to move into Poland Shepherd of the Valley with his brother. Shortly before Merton had moved in, LeRoy passed away. Merton decided to purchase the naming rights to the longue and dedicate it to LeRoy. There was a ribbon cutting on Feb. 9 for the residents and faculty of Shepherd of the Valley. Around 200 people showed up to the ribbon cutting and had the opportunity to take a tour of the new building addition.
Shepherd of the Valley worked with DeSalvo Construction and was able to get the project completed in less than a year. The addition created new job opportunities for people to apply for as well as current staff getting the opportunity to be promoted. “I can’t believe how fast they were able to build it. I’d be here on a Tuesday and then I’d come back on Thursday and the building was completely different,” said Danielle Procopio, Director of Marketing, Sales and Communication. The opening of the new addition has been exciting for not only Shepherd of the Valley residents and staff, but for those with family members who are interesting in becoming part of the Shepherd of the Valley family.

Library hosts lots of Leprechaun fun By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Poland library hosted a day full of different St. Patrick’s Day festivities for people of all ages to enjoy on March 11. The morning started out with a Leprechaun Magic Show put on by Fritz Coombs, also known as Coombs the Conjurer. Coombs did a variety of magic tricks dressed up as a leprechaun. While some of the magic tricks were solo tricks, Coombs did several tricks that used the children in the audience as helpers. After the show was finished, the children, many dressed in green, orange and white, lined up to prepare for the parade. Poland librarians Amanda Kollar and Vikki Peck passed out green and white streamers for the children to wave. Coombs made his way to the front of the line as he led the children on a parade through the library. The children went upstairs and back down as they waved their streamers. Every child who participated in the parade entered for a chance to win a book of Irish fairy tales. A story time followed the parade as a way for children to relax. Before the story began, the winner of the Irish fairy tales book was chosen. The activities ended with a scavenger hunt for children in sixth grade and under. The scavenger hunt provided a good opportunity for the guests to visit Kravitz Deli and see their selection of Irish food. Burke Irish Dancers came in as the last act of the afternoon. Many of the guests stayed to watch the dancers before they made their way back home. The Leprechaun Lollapalooza event at the Poland library is always an event where many people come in to enjoy the festivities.

Little Red Schoolhouse preserved for future generations By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The Little Red Schoolhouse in Poland, built in 1858, is currently owned by the Board of Education and leased by the Poland Township Historical Society. The building serves as a location for meetings, educational purposes and a historic landmark. As time went on, the Little Red Schoolhouse didn’t receive consistent maintenance and eventually fell into disrepair. The Board of Education was faced with selling or investing in the building. The schoolhouse was rescued by a group of concerned Poland residents who were interested in saving the historic building. The residents then formed the Poland Township Historial Society on March 26, 1980 to keep the building from potential destruction. On Sept. 28, 1987 the schoolhouse was dedicated to the residents of Poland. The Poland Township Historical Society applied for a History Fund Grant from the Ohio History Connection in 2015. At Ohio Statehood Day on March 1, 2016, the PHS was awarded a grant of $6,327 for the $10,545 cost of the Little Red Schoolhouse Window Restoration Project.
OUR TOWN briefs
Get connected with digital media Would you like to learn how to download free eBooks, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, music, complete issues of magazines and more to your computer and mobile devices? Come to the Poland library on April 22 at 10 a.m. This event is for adults.
Library closings All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on April 15 and 16.
This grant allowed the Historical Society to have the eight double-hung, 12 pane glass windows restored and preserved according to the National Park Services Preservation Brief guidelines for historic buildings. Herb Soss, owner of Ace Lumber, was awarded the contract to work on the restoration. Soss was required to preserve as much of the original wood as possible in each window. The project was completed by the Dec. 31, 2016 agreement. There are 11 out of 16 sashes that are original to 1858 and contain several pieces of old, wavy glass. The Historica l Societ y is very grateful for the Ohio History Fund Grant program which provided over half of the project funds. This program is excellent in helping non-profit organizations receive funding for historic preservations so future generations can enjoy the landmarks. “The Little Red Schoolhouse Window Restoration Project made possible in part by a grant from the Ohio History Connection’s History Fund. The History Fund is supported exclusively by voluntary donations of Ohio income tax refunds and designated gifts to the Ohio History Connection. www.ohiohistory. org/historyfund.”
