Sixty students from northeast Ohio competed in the FFA District 3 Floriculture Competition at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center on March 3. Gates Mills Environmental Education Center, Trumbull County Career and Technical Center and MCCTC all competed in the following categories: the floriculture written exam, bud vase and corsage design, plant and flower I.D., plant judging and materials and tools I.D. MCCTC students McKenna Schisler, Haley Sowers, Robin Smith and Megan Perrett received the first place team award and Schisler also won first place individually. Special thanks go to the many volunteers from several agencies and organizations, including Mill Creek Metroparks, the Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown, Draime Legacy Gardens - KSU, OSU Master Gardeners, St. Michael’s Garden Guild and MCCTC Floral Design and Landscaping Advisory Board members and former students.

PSHS bands and choir excel at district contest On March 11 and 12, the Poland Seminary High School bands and choir performed at the OMEA District Contest at Howland High School. The wind ensemble played on March 11 and for only the fourth time in school history, earned an overall Superior rating in Class AA, the highest in the contest. They were one of only two bands in Mahoning, Trumbull and Ashtabula counties to perform in Class AA. On March 12, the symphonic band performed in Class C and earned an overall Superior rating. Also on March 12, the choir not only received an overall superior rating, but received that rating from each individual judge as well. This was the first time in the last 30 years that the choir received a superior rating at District Contest.

Lions of District 13D will host Bob Evans fundraiser Lions District 13D’s Melvin Jones Eye Care Foundation will host a fundraiser through the Bob Evans Community Fundraiser in five different counties: Mahoning, Columbiana, Trumbull, Portage and Stark on April 6. The Eye Care Foundation helps with Cataract Surgeries for individuals who are unable to pay for the surgery. All Bob Evans North East Ohio Restaurants will participate in the fundraiser. Gamblers Anonymous, a 12Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the YoungstownWarren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League to host meeting The next meeting of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will be hosted on April 4 at 7 p.m. at Glenellen, located at 9661 Market Street in North Lima. Past presidents will meet at 6 p.m. to discuss the constitution. A guest speaker will be coming from Frisky Ferrets, Fuzzies and Feathered Friends Rescue and Sanctuary. Members are asked to bring an item from their wish list to help the small animals. Members are also asked to bring one bottle of body wash for The Veterans Blessing Bags. Hostesses for the month are Tina Bellino, Nina Lowery and Sperry Rongone who will be sharing food from their Italian Heritage. The Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women ages 18 and up, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Daffodil weekend See more than 200 species and cultivars on display at the Gardens during a special guided walk each day. Take a stroll through Daffofil Meadow in Mill Creek MetroParks. Poland Union students welcomed comic book illustrator, Jerry DeCaire, to their school on March 2. DeCaire has worked for Marvel, and is currently working freelance and creating his own work. He travels around the country to give presentations to students about how every superhero he draws uses math and science. DeCaire began by speaking to the students about the different superheroes he illustrates. He talked about his background and that he graduated college with a Bachelors of Science, studying biology, art and education. DeCaire put an emphasis on the three P’s: perspective, proportion and physique. “These are three things that every artist must know to draw a superhero,” said DeCaire. After DeCaire showed the students characters that he had drawn prior to his presentation, he sat down and started drawing different superheroes and had the students guess who he was drawing.

Before the presentation started, some of the students names were randomly drawn to win the different drawings from DeCaire. Among the characters drawn were Batman, Superman, Wolverine and The Flash.
Four lucky students got to take those pictures home. DeCaire wanted to show that what students learn in school is important and that they will use it in their work after they finish school. Any job requires
the knowledge of subjects that are taught in school, no matter what grade. “No matter how old I get, I am still enthusiastic about this stuff. I really am, I love it,” said DeCaire.

The Easter Bunny hopped its way to the Lariccia Family Community Center on March 8 and 9 for an evening with the Easter Bunny. A two-night Dinner with the Easter Bunny event took place at Boardman Park for children and their families to celebrate Easter and the upcoming spring season. Families spent the evening visiting the Easter Bunny, eating a meal, making different crafts and also petting a real rabbit. Families enjoyed the twohour event by eating a meal when they first got there. After the meal, the children and their families went into the joining room to work on crafts and get a picture with the Easter Bunny. “They get to enjoy the spring and Easter season as a family,” said Karen McCallum, the recreation director of Boardman Park. The children lined up to visit the Easter Bunny and tell them what they were hoping to find in their Easter basket. There were also several tables set up with different art projects for the children to work on. There was a picture for the children to color in with paint, a paper bag and other supplies to transform the bag into a rabbit and different types of paper to make Easter

Poland North Preschool students celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday with a week full of activities, including Wacky Wednesday on March 2. “Wacky Wednesday” is a book written by Dr. Seuss and this year Dr. Seuss’ birthday fell on a Wednesday, allowing students to celebrate appropriately. The students at Poland North came into school on March 2 with crazy hair and outfits. Some of
the students also put crazy colors in their hair. “We’re doing Dr. Seuss week and today is the craziest day. Yesterday was sock day, Monday was red fish, blue fish and tomorrow is going to be crazy hat day,” said Samantha Cox, the transitional kindergarten teacher. There were students who dressed up in tutu’s, wore their clothes backwards and inside out, and had on mismatched outfits. The students celebrated Wacky Wednesday by read-
ing Dr. Seuss books, including “Wacky Wednesday.” Cox joined in the celebration by wearing her hair in braids the stuck out the side of her head. One of the students in Joy Bucci’s class also celebrated her own birthday during Wacky Wednesday. Bucci and her class had two celebrations making the day extra special. The students looked forward to participating in Dr. Seuss week so they could show off their crazy outfits and learn more about Dr. Seuss.

Poland’s sixth-grade girls basketball team won the Girard March Madness Tournament on March 19 by defeating the Howland Tigers. The Lady Bulldogs have played together for the last three years (fourth, fifth and sixth grade), compiling a record of 130–12 and winning 24 tournament championships along the way. While playing in the local Tri-County area, the girls have traveled to the Cleveland, Akron and Pittsburgh areas to play against some formidable opponents. The lady Bulldogs have laid down a solid foundation of team basketball that will carry them forward in their basketball careers. State Gymnastics Competitors move on to Regionals You ngstow n Gy m nast ics Center participated in the USA Women’s Gymnastics Ohio State Championships at the Ralph Infante Wellness Center in Niles. Teams from throughout the state of Ohio participated with gymnasts in Levels 6-10. The gymnasts competing in Levels 9 and 10 were competing to achieve a qualifying score to go to Regionals, which will take place April 8-10 in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Junior Olympic National Championships is the culmination event for the competitive season. The competition features twelve age divisions which are determined by birth date. These gymnasts are vying to become Junior Olympic National Champions in the all-around, as well as in all four events: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. USA Gymnastics has eight regions, and the top seven gymnasts in each age division from
each region’s Regional Championships advance to nationals. The winning Regions will also be determined at the conclusion of the competition. The top four all-around athletes in each of the twelve age division also qualify to the 2016 Junior Olympic National Team and are invited to attend a National Training Camp at the USA Gymnastics National Team Training Center at the Karolyi Ranch, a U.S. Olympic Training Site, in Huntsville, Texas. The Level 9 National Competition will take place at the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, Va. The Level 10 National Competition will take place May 13-15 at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Athletes from Youngstown Gymnastics Center who will be participating in Regionals in hopes of qualifying to Nationals will be: In Level 10 - Rachel Gurgiolo, age 17, from Mohawk High School; Gabrielle Williams, age
17, from Mooney High School; Jamie Sklenar, age 17, from Canfield High School, and Anna Warhol, age 17, from Boardman High School.
