Band and Orchestra Parents to host fundraising event The Boardman Band and Orchestra Parents will host a Night at the Races on April 14 at St. Luke’s Banquet Hall, located at 5235 South Avenue in Boardman. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The evening will include $2 horse bets, a horse auction, Chinese auction, 50/50 drawing and $2 and $5 sideboards. Tickets are $15 at the door and include admission and food. This event is bring your own beverage (all beverages except water).

Boardman Historical Society hosts local author and historian Local author and historian Tom Welsh will be the guest speaker on April 14 for the Boardman Historical Society at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. Welsh will present a program based upon his book title “Strouss’: Youngstown’s Dependable Department Store,” which he coauthored with Michael Geltz. The program is part of a new series of BHS public offerings. The presentation is open to the public. A question and answer period will be available after the 45 minute program. Admis-

sion is free and reservations are suggested. Walk-ins are welcomed and admitted based upon seating availability. Pruning clinic offered at the Boardman Park There will be a hands-on pruning clinic at the historic Smith Family Homestead, located at 8270 Raupp Ave. in Boardman, which is off of Washington Boulevard, on April 25 from 1-3 p.m. The clinic is sponsored by the Ohio State Extension Service, Boardman Park and the Mahoning Valley Landscape and Nursery Association. Participants will learn to prune for maximum flower potential, disease reduction, regeneration and shape. Additionally, proper pruning techniques and tools will be discussed. There will be hands-on training and participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring a lawn chair if needed. Pre-registration is required. The fee is $20 per person, which includes a set of hand pruners and a set of handouts.

Dunkin’ Donuts helps feed local families Now through April 30, Dunkin’ Donuts in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be selling icons for a $1 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. With every icon purchased, the customer receives a $1 off coupon for a pound of coffee.

For every $1 given, the Food Bank can distribute $11 worth of food to hungry families in our community. Last year, Dunkin’ Donut locations in the Mahoning Valley raised more than $21,000 to feed local families. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised will remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to feed our friends and neighbors. Glenwood PTA hosts volleyball championship

Students, teachers and police gathered in the gymnasium of Glenwood Junior High School for a volleyball championship on the evening of March 22.

The school’s PTA organized the event to raise money for their organization. During the event, two seventh-grade teams and two eighth-grade teams competed against each other in a game of volleyball. A team of teachers also played against a team of Boardman Police Officers.

PTA President Tracie Balentine set up the event. The school had done the event in years past, but the Boardman police began competing against the teachers recently. Balentine said this created a community feel to the games.

Teams paid $40 to enter a volleyball tournament. Each grade competed in a different double elimination tournament after school during the week. The top Neighbors | Zack Shively two teams of each grade played Glenwood Junior High School’s volleyball championship saw two seventh-grade teams play, followed by the teachers and the Boardman Police and concluding with the eighth-grade tournament. The students teams had eight playat the event that night.

Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp will soon begin. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imaginations, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. The curriculum is designed to be age appropriate, educational and fun as the children participate in a daily schedule of arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. Adventure Day Camp will run for 10 weeks, starting on June 11 and running through Aug. 17. The Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. Arrangements can be made if you need to bring campers early or pick them up later for an additional charge.

Spartan Stadium Project benefactors honored Boardman residents Bill and Karen Veri are this year’s recipients of the Boardman Civic Association’s Community Service Award. They have donated a total of $270,000 to the Spartan Stadium Project and are the largest sole contributor to date.

Karen accepted the award at the civic group’s Annual Community Awards Dinner at the Lariccia Center on Feb. 22. Bill was out of town, but Karen was accompanied by several fam-

ily members, including their son, Anthony, who is currently a sophomore and band member at Boardman High School.

“When we consider the Community Service Award, The Boardman Civic Association looks for the humble and generous nature that comes so naturally to the Veris,” said Mark Luke, Civic Association member and emcee for the event. “It is the very nature of service that brings us here tonight, because

on two occasions the Veris have generously supported the Spartan Stadium Project. They leave a lasting impact and legacy to be used and enjoyed for years to come.”

In 2016, the couple donated $150,000 to build the band shell and then in the fall of 2017, they announced an additional donation of $120,000 to jump start the third and final phase which will include a concession stand, locker rooms and restrooms.

Boardman Park’s community garden to start planting While it may still be too early for digging and planting it’s not too early to join the community garden and start planning what fresh vegetables will be on your dinner table this summer. Whether you have a green thumb and are an experienced gardener or whether you are a beginner, community gardens allow you to experience the joys of gardening, promote healthy eating habits and build new relationships with others in the

community. The garden is located at the Historic Southern Stables on Washington Boulevard. Registration for the 10 feet by 20 feet garden plots begins on April 2 at the Boardman Park Office, located at 375 Boardman-Poland Road, and are available for a fee of $25.

Your fee includes the garden plot, water and periodic classes/instructions on gardening. Due to the limited number of plots available, registration is limited to Boardman residents only. Retained as President was COL Walter Duzzny, who has served this this capacity for more than 25 years. Re-elected as Vice President was Dr. Willard Stamp, a retired Medical Corp Colonel who served in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Serving as Treasurer since 2014 is LTC Michael Wisniewski, a life member of ROA since 1980.

Secretary of the Chapter is Chief Warrant Officer Four William T. Meshot, a member of ROA since 1972 and serving as secretary for more than 20 years. Bands perform at winter concert

The Boardman band programs had their annual winter concert on March 1 in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.

The concert featured the symphonic band and wind ensemble, as well as performances from smaller ensembles. Thomas Ruggieri directed the small ensembles and wind ensemble, while directors Timothy Tuite and Michael Shevock worked with the symphonic band.

The night began with small group performances in the hallway in front of the BPAC when the doors first opened. These performances included low brass and flute ensembles. The percussion ensemble began the event at 7 p.m. in the BPAC. The symphonic band played after the percussion group. Tuite said that this year’s set was atypical because they did not have a march or a slower song. He told the audience the performance would be more like the score to an action film. They began with Robert W. Smith’s “Eternal Peaks” and Richard Saucedo’s “Nightsong.”

Tuite directed the students for “Roaring Run” by Robert Traugh, a colleague of Tuite. Traugh met with the symphonic band for an hour to work on the piece and attended the concert.

Shevock then had volunteers from the wind ensemble join the group for their closer, “Dr. Who: Through Time and Space.“ He explained the premise of the BBC program “Dr. Who” to the

audience. The piece they played featured several themes from the show. The students used an iPad app to play a theremin sound, which is used during some of the themes.

After the symphonic band finished, the wind ensemble set up for their performance. In between the bands, Ruggieri directed the flute choir for “Farendole”

by Ervin Monroe. Ruggieri also spoke to the audience about previous and future performances for the Boardman bands.

The wind ensemble began with “Hands Across the Sea” by John Philip Sousa, then they played “Armenian Dances (Part 1)” by Alfred Reed and “The Summit”

by John Moss. Ruggieri obliged the students’ request to play John Barnes Chance’s “Variations on a Korean Folk Song,” a piece they played years ago, for this year’s

concert.

They ended the night with a John Higgins arranged medley of songs from the Disney film “The Lion King,” which included five songs from the movie beginning with “Circle of Life” and concluding with “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” The group previously performed the piece at Boardman’s 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Arts.

The Boardman bands performed at a competition on March 9, and will also perform at their spring concert on May 2 and a Memorial Day concert on May 28. Other groups, such as their jazz band and drumline, will have performances as well, including the spring jazz concert June 1 and drumline at Relay For Life on May 18. The bands schedule for the school year ends on June 5 with a rock show at Boardman Park.

Quiz Bowl team continues dominant streak

The Boardman High School Quiz Bowl team continued their undisputed streak in the Mahoning Quizbowl Tournament on Feb. 24.

The team had a streak of 56 unbeaten matches with 54 wins and two ties going into the tournament. They have won both the Mahoning League and Mahoning Quizbowl Tournament the last four years, starting in 2015.

Boa rd ma n H ig h School English teacher Randy Nord coaches the team. She said the team practices at weekly meetings to continue bolstering the students’ wide knowledge base and to work on the speed in which they answer. She enjoys the quiz bowl because it places value on academic strength.

The high school also had a single player, Pra nav Padmanabhan, recognized for his stand-out performance in his quiz bowl career. Padmanabhan won the Mahoning League’s 2018 Player of the Year award, an accolade he has won in the past two seasons as well.

He scored 1,430 points during the season, with an average of 143 a match.

went head-to-head with another quiz team. Each team had four members that answered questions from a moderator.

The players pressed a button on a buzzer, similar to a game show, to get the chance to answer. These “toss up” questions allowed for either team to answer.

After buzzing in and correctly answering a question, the moderator gave an additional three bonus questions to the team that answered the initial toss up question. The bonus questions were about the same topic. For example, Boardman correctly answered a question

about John Milton’s “Paradise Lost,“ which led to three more questions about the work and author.

A single match had 20 toss up questions, each with three add it iona l quest ions. T he questions covered a variety of topics, from math, sports, literature and more. The same match i ncluded quest ions about a math equation, the geography of Canada and popular singers.

The team will compete at the national tournament in Atlanta on May 25-27. They will also compete in a state-wide competition.

Butler qualifies for state Geography Bee Neighbors | Submitted

Brendan Butler, an eighth-grade student at Glenwood Junior High, will compete in the 2018 Ohio State Geography Bee on April 6 at the Fawcett Center at Ohio State University. This is his second trip to the State Bee, finishing in the top ten last year. The National Geographic Bee, an academic contest for students in grades four through eight, is the ultimate goal.

The range of material includes social studies, earth and space science, the environment culture and geography. Students must take a qualifying test to compete at the state level. Butler is one of only two students from the Mahoning Valley to qualify. He’ll compete against the top 100 students from across Ohio. The winner of the State Bee will advance to the National Geography Bee in Washington D.C. May 20-23. These events are sponsored by the National Geographic Society in order to improve geographic literacy and integrate more technology into the classroom.

Westminster Presbyterian Church offers used book sale Just as April brings us the promise of May flowers, it is also the month of the annual Westminster Presbyterian Church Used Book Sale. For the 62nd consecutive year, thousands of books will be available to purchase.

Friendly Squares to hold dance April 14 The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on April 14 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. YAPA celebrates 92nd anniversary The Youngstown Alumnae Panhellenic Association (YAPA) has begun its 92nd year of Panhellenic sisterhood, scholarship and service.

YAPA members have given generously of their time, support and donations to various projects this past Panhellenic year.

YAPA is celebrating several successes of their past year which included six new members, collecting fifteen pounds of non-perishable food items for the YSU Student Food Pantry, 61 personal care items to Hero Box organization for a servicewoman and 22 YAPA members participated in a “Smart Cookie” program. Members baked or donated sweet treats for YSU collegiate Greek women as a care package for finals week. Each sorority was given treats for their individual members along with a note of encouragement.

One of the biggest successes was the annual holiday luncheon attended by 50 members and 11 guests. Anna Masi of Delta Zeta, YAPA President and Historian and Jennifer Rinehart of Alpha Sigma Tau, Philanthropic Endeavors Chairman brought back an old tradition of a gift basket raffle in addition to a 50/50 raffle and a new pretzel fundraiser to raise funds for our scholarship endowment. The Boardman library celebrated the Winter Olympic Games with a “Go For Gold!“ children’s program on Feb. 15.

Librarian John Yingling set up a series of games for the program. Every child that attended the event received a gold medal for their efforts in the events.

For the first game that the children played, they dropped marshmallows in a cup one-byone. They had to stand straight up while dropping them, so the shorter children had more success at the game.

Then, Yingling demonstrated his take on curling. He had target zone marked in tape on the floor.

He gave the children an apple wrapped in tape, which they rolled into the target area to win the game. He used tape to set up a place to roll the apple from. The

Another game Yingling set out asked the children to push a ball into a box on its side. The attendees had to sweep the balls using a broom from behind a line, which meant they needed quite a bit of force to move the balls into the box.

The children also participated in two tossing games. One game had the children toss three plastic balls in a basket from different distances. The other game was a take on shot put. The children threw different bean bags from the space between their neck and shoulder.

Yingling had a cup-and-ball for all the children to play. Each child enjoyed trying to swing the ball into the cup. Many swung too hard and had difficulty accomplishing the goal of the game.

The competitors had to snake between the chairs, touch the back wall, and snake back to the beginning. While they moved, they had to use wooden yard-

sticks like skis.

Yingling moved the chairs and the children raced each other in a cross country skiing game.

They still used the yardsticks like skis, but they could not pick up their feet as they moved across the floor this time. Some of the children took off their shoes

and raced in their socks to slide across the floor faster. Yingling timed the children in both skiing games.

The event ended with a medal ceremony where Yingling passed out gold medals to each of the children and placed stickers of the American flag on the medals.

With overtime, annual compensation can easily reach over $75,000.
