Dunkin’ Donuts helps feed local families Now through April 30, Dunkin’ Donuts in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be selling icons for a $1 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. With every icon purchased, the customer receives a $1 off coupon for a pound of coffee. For every $1 given, the Food Bank can distribute $11 worth of food to hungry families in our community. Last year, Dunkin’ Donut locations in the Mahoning Valley raised more than $21,000 to feed local families.

The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, AkronCanton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised will remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to feed our friends and neighbors.

Easter brunch at the gardens Fellows Riverside Gardens will be hosting an Easter Brunch by Inspired Catering by Kravitz on April 1 an noon or 3 p.m. The cost is $28 for adults, $15 for children ages 12-4 and free for children under 4-years of age. Poland library to host fundraiser On April 15 at 1 p.m. at the Poland library, there will be a ‘Book Review and a Soup and Salad, Too’ fundraiser for Springfield library with guest speaker Christine Ridarsky, Historian for the City of Rochester, N.Y. and Manager of the Local History and Genealogy Division of the Central Library of Rochester, N.Y. She is a Springfield Local High School graduate. This is a book review and a soup and salad luncheon for $20. The books is “Susan B. Anthony and Struggle for Equal Rights.” There will be a basket raffle and a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds benefit the Springfield Library Capital Campaign. Easter events for children at Heritage Presbyterian

Heritage Presbyterian Church had their sixth annual Easter egg hunt on March 24.

The church leaders and volunteers placed eggs in three different sections of the yard surrounding the church. Children ran around the sections with their age group. The church split up the groups into children ages 1-5, 6-8 and 9-12.

“We try to open the doors as much as possible,“ said Kathy Moff, the organizer of the hunt.

She wanted to include anyone from any denomination to the event. She said the event let the community “know we’re here“ if anyone wants to join or just needs some help. “If the children have fun, that’s all that matters.“ Some of the eggs had tokens in them. The children could exchange these tokens for prizes.

Moff said that children with multiple tokens would win as many prizes as tokens they had. The church had two prize tables, one for children ages 1-8 and another for the children 9-12.

Poland Lions host annual fundraiser The Poland Lions are hosting their annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 9. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Poland High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road.

Vendors are being sought for this oneday sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. No hot food or soft drink venders or raffle drawings. There is a limit of 100 spaces and you must bring your own table (tables up to 8 feet in length work best in front of your trunk). The cost per space is $15 until May 1. Spaces increase to $20 after May 1. Vendors may arrive after 7:30 a.m. and must be in their assigned spot by 8:30 a.m. No refunds are given for any reason and the event will take place rain or shine. The church has other programs for children in the community as well. They have a summer preschool program called “summer play days“ where children play and learn about the Bible. YAPA celebrates 92nd anniversary T he You ng stow n A lu mnae Panhellenic Association ( YA PA) has beg un its 92nd year of Panhellenic sisterhood, scholarship and service.

YAPA members have given generously of their time, support and donations to various projects this past Panhellenic year.

YA PA is celebrat i ng several successes of their past year which included six new members, collecting fifteen pou nds of non-per ishable food items for the YSU Student Food Pantry, 61 personal care items to Hero Box organization for a servicewoman and 22 YAPA members participated in a “Smart Cookie� program. Members baked or donated sweet treats for YSU collegiate Greek women as a care package for finals week.

Each sorority was given treats for their individual members along with a note of encouragement.

One of the biggest successes was the annual holiday luncheon attended by 50 members and 11 guests. Anna Masi of Delta Zeta, YAPA President a nd H i stor ia n a nd Jen n ifer Rinehart of Alpha Sigma Tau, Philanthropic Endeavors Chairman brought back an old

tradition of a gift basket raffle in addition to a 50/50 raff le and a new pretzel fundraiser to raise funds for our scholarship endowment.

The luncheon is a time to celebrate t he Pa n hel len ic b ond w it h mem b er s a nd honor members who have achieved a membership milestone. YAPA recognized Jackie Stambaugh for obtaining Life Membership status for 50 years of membership. Stambaugh was presented with a gift to acknowledge her dedication. YAPA also recognized eleven past presidents in attendance.

The gift basket raffle had 26 donations from area businesses and organizations which raised $580. The total amount ra ised for t he schola rsh ip endowment at the luncheon was $755 which is the second highest total in the last two decades.

At a recent meeting of the Mahoning Chapter OH-42 of the Reserve Officers Association (ROA), all officers of the chapter were retained and re-elected to their respective position. Retained as President was COL Walter Duzzny (center) who has served this this capacity for more than 25 years. Re-elected as Vice President was Dr. Willard Stamp (left), a retired Medical Corp Colonel who served in the United States Army Reserve. Serving as Treasurer since 2014 is LTC Michael Wisniewski (right), a life member of ROA since 1980. Secretary of the Chapter is Chief Warrant Officer Four William T. Meshot, a member of ROA since 1972 and serving as secretary for more than 20 years. The Mahoning Chapter has 65 members, many of whom are Life Members. The Chapter meets every third Thursday of the month at the Manor Restaurant in Austintown, located at the corner of State Route 46 and Kirk Road. It meets jointly with the Ladies Auxiliary, the Reserve Officers Association League (ROAL). The next dinner meeting is on April 19 at 5 p.m. The membership chairman is LTC Donald Rasile at 330-758-3348. Youth Ministry makes hats for babies Neighbors | Submitted

On Feb. 11, the Holy Family Youth Ministry made hats for premature babies at Akron Children’s Hospital.

On Feb. 28, Holy Family School students presented Akron Children’s Hospital with a check for $1,000 from a corn hole tournament that all the students participated in during Catholic Schools Week. Kelsey Moreton from Akron Children’s Hospital received the check on behalf of the Hospital. Puppet show at Dobbins teaches students about bullying

The Dobbins Elementary students waited excitedly in the auditorium for a presentation by Sadecky’s Puppets on Feb. 28.

Sadecky’s Puppets, a nonprofit educational entertainment organization, gave an anti-bullying show with a focus on realizing the way one treats others.

Will Foster and Kevin Stimeling performed the puppet show for the students.

Stimeling said he enjoys working with the group because the process of setting the show up and moving the equipment for the show is like a blue-collar job, but then he gets to provide a happiness to children.

The students cheered and chanted for the puppets as they awaited the presentation to begin. Foster introduced himself and the show and then went behind a black wall they had set up.

The group had the large black wall set up for them to be behind while moving the puppets.

Behind the puppets, they had a large projection screen to show the setting of each scene. They also had lights for their presentation.

Their show, called “Good Fortune,“ followed Benny Fortune and his daily life. He started the presentation as an inconsiderate

The students at Dobbins Elementary waited excitedly in the school’s auditorium for the puppet show to begin. They were engaged with the story throughout and enjoyed the humor and message.

person, but he became a much nicer child after a fortune cookie changed the way he thought about how he treated others.

He began to help out the other characters in the story. He had been mean to many of these characters before his change.

Near the end of the story, he talked to the bully and made the bully change for the better, too.

Isabella Zamaria, a fourthgrade student at the school, said she enjoyed the show because it had a good message and made

her laugh. Third-grade student Mark Len said that he liked when the main character stood up to the bully.

After the performance, principal Michael Daley spoke to the students about kindness. Benny Fortune did not care about the way he treated one character because he figured he would never see the character again, which turned out to be wrong.

Daley spoke on this idea, saying the students should be nice to everyone.

Middle school connects with Indian students

Poland Middle School had a video chat session with students in India on Feb. 27 as a part of the school’s Capture Kindness Month.

The school connected on a three-way video chat with students from the Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project in Baliganapalli, Tamil Nadu in India and Ravi Hutheesing, who set up the connection between the two schools.

Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project runs a small private school in India for children born into the lowest class to receive an education. The students receive their education from the age of four until they graduate twelfth grade.

Hutheesing partners with the organization. He himself is a musician and speaker. School counselors Laura Mechling and Mary Jo Rowan met him after his keynote address at the 2017 All Ohio Counselors Conference and the three set up the

video conference between the schools with the help of representatives from both schools.

The counselors asked for volunteers to be a part of the conversation, which resulted in many students wanting to be involved with the project.

Rowan had the students do a quick writing exercise during their advisory period to explain why they wanted to participate in the program.

Hutheesing, pictured on screen, and the school counselors Mary Jo Rowan and Laura Mechling organized the event between the schools after the counselors met Hutheesing at a conference.

Hutheesing gave the schools some information about each other to begin. Then, students from the schools asked each other questions about their lives.

A confident Poland Middle School student opened the discussion by asking about the weather in India. From there, the schools exchanged questions that ranged from “what sports does your school offer?“ to “If you were to change one thing about the world, what would it be?“ The schools found that they shared a lot of similarities in their interests and desires.

Both schools play most of the same sports, such as basketball and soccer, and listened to a lot of the same music, including Taylor Swift and Drake. They also both wanted to help make the world a better place.

They did find out some differences, both small and large.

Their climates are very different, the Indian students play cricket and listen to Bollywood music and the Poland students

eat at a variety of fast food restaurants. The Poland students realized that the Shanti Bhavan students had a closer community with each other.

The students talked with the counselors after the video call.

The students agreed that the Shanti Bhavan children were k ind and welcoming. They were surprised by how much they had in common with each other.

When the students answered w hat t hey wou ld w a nt to change in the world, Hutheesing asked the students to think about what ways the students could elicit change right now.

Similarly, the students discussed how strong of a community the Shanti Bhavan had in their school. They tried to come up with ways that they could raise their sense of community and engagement with each other.

One student said that if they could find things in common with people across the world, they should be able to find commonalities among each other.

Another student noted that the Shanti Bhavan school has a smaller group of students, and they all live together at the school, making it easier for their connection. He then said that creating a familial connection throughout the school is still something to strive for, even if it is difficult.

Our company is looking for experienced machinists to run large horizontal boring mills and planer mills, both CNC and manual. Candidates must be able to read blueprints, make frequent and complicated set-ups, work to close tolerances, and be willing to work overtime as needed. Need is primarily for night shift (10:00pm to 6:00am). Night shift positions earn up to $3.00 per hour shift differential depending on the size and type of machine. Total compensation for night shift would be in the $21-$26 per hour range depending on a candidate’s experience level and capabilities. With overtime, annual compensation can easily reach over $75,000.

We also look favorably on candidates who have received NIMS credentials for machining or who have achieved journeyworker status through a machinist apprenticeship program.
