Students suit up for St. Patrick’s Day By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Students at Hitchcock Woods Early Learning Center dressed in green to prepare for the St. Patrick’s Day celebration on March 16. There were different activities the students participated in to get in the spirit of St. Patrick’s
Day. Stations were set up for the children to play games at and make different crafts. There was a station for the students to make a rainbow bracelet out of cereal and ribbon, a sensory station with various green items, green Play-Doh and many more. One of the more favorite stations was a leprechaun pot full of green goo for the children to
dig and find different colored gems. This activity gave the children the opportunity to get a little messy while being hands on. After the students finished at their stations, they went to another classroom to try out a leprechaun racing experiment. A piece of ribbon was strung through a straw that was taped
to an inflated balloon. One piece of the ribbon was taped to the wall and the students held the other end and had to see who could get the balloon to the wall first. Hitchcock Woods has been working to implement more STEM lessons with the students to try and get them more handson with their learning.

Drivers for Meals on Wheels attended an appreciation brunch on March 18.
Brunch honors Meals on Wheels volunteers By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Meals on Wheels showed their appreciation for their volunteer drivers on March 18 by hosting a brunch. This is the first year Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County hosted a brunch for the drivers. They wanted to do something to show how much the drivers mean to the organization and have a day to celebrate the drivers.
Jerry Martin, driver of 16 years, has been a loyal volunteer and drives whenever he is asked. Martin, who previously taught for the Boardman Schools, joined Meals on Wheels because of the respect he has for the generation ahead of him. “Once I retired, I wanted to pay back,” said Martin. “I think I got another year or two in me.” Martin said the generation they are serving have made it possible for people now to have a good life. They are strong char-
acters with strong values, which is something he admires. Volu nteers for Mea ls on Wheels are more than just people who deliver food. They provide a watchful eye to their customers and become friends with them in the process. Several volunteers have made friends with the people they serve meals too and are happy to see each other when the food is being delivered. Many of the customers look forward to seeing the volunteers. “We couldn’t do it without
them. We have 35-37 volunteers that come five days a week,” said Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County president Kathy Esseniyi. The brunch provided an opportunity for all of the volunteers of Meals on Wheels to get together and have a good time. The Meals on Wheels board enjoyed having the chance to show how much they appreciate their drivers, and that Meals on Wheels of Mahoning County wouldn’t happen without them.

All seventh-graders at Glenwood Junior High are gearing up for a national competition called “KidWind Challenge.” Eric Diefenderfer’s seventh-grade science class is the first to start the process. The students are using wind turbine kits purchased through the Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence teacher grant. The students are designing and building their own wind turbines to generate electricity. The students will then enter their data online for the KidWind Challenge https://www.kidwindchallenge.org/, a monthly national competition.
