Local young lady to compete for Miss Teen title Chloe Klotz of Canfield was recently selected to participate in the 2016 Miss Teen pageant competition that will take place on April 10. After submitting an application and attending an interview session with this year’s Youngstown Pageant Coordinator, Klotz learned of her acceptance. Klotz will be competing for her share of thousands of dollars in prizes and speciality gifts that will be distributed to the contestants. Klotz is entered in the Miss Teen division, one of two divisions that will have young ladies ages 13-19 competing in the modeling routines of casual wear and formal wear. Additionally, Klotz will display her personality and interviewing skills to this year’s judging panel. Personality is the number one aspect that each contestant is judged on during all phases of the competition. If Klotz were to win the title of Miss Teen, she would represent the Youngstown area at the National Competition that will take place in Orlando, Fla. More than $30,000 in prizes and awards will be presented at the National Competition, and each winner will enjoy this expense paid trip of five nights and six days in sunny Orlando. Community businesses, organizations and private individuals will assist Klotz in the competition by becoming official sponsors to her. Through sponsorship, each contestant receives all the necessary training, rehearsals and financial support to compete. This will allow Klotz to become confident and well-prepared for the upcoming pageant. Any business, organization or private individual who may be interested in becoming a sponsor to Klotz may contact the Miss Teen pageant coordinator at 1-877-403-6678.

Hilltop Elementary School f irst-g raders inv ited t heir grandparents to join them for a special musical performance and a visit to their classrooms the school’s annual Grandparents Day on March 17. As the students entered the multipurpose room to perform the musical portion of the day, they were met by their proud, excited and waving grandparents, armed with cameras, video cameras, iPads and iPhones. “Good afternoon, everyone. Welcome and thank you for being here on this St. Patrick’s Day and Grandparents Day. Our first-grade students have worked very hard for weeks and months rehearsing this program for you. I think this is the largest crowd of grandparents we have had. We would like to thank our first-grade teachers and, of course, Mr. Scurich for all their hard work, too. We are glad you are all here and please enjoy the program and have a great day,” said Joe Maroni, Hilltop Elementary School principal, as he welcomed the grandparents. Ma roni t hen turned t he program over to Tom Scurich,

Hilltop Elementary School music teacher, who was accompanied on the piano by Courtney Larson. “Welcome everyone. I think we need an official waving session, so students wave to your grandparents and grandparents wave to your grandchildren,” Scurich said Scurich started the program with the Pledge of Allegiance and was followed by the students sing ing t heir school song, Hilltop Elementary. The students then sang “You’re A Grand Old Flag” and “My Country ’Tis of Thee.” Cha rn Creed, f irst-g rade teacher, welcomed the grandparents and explained a bit about the program. “As grandparents, your special grandchildren warm your hearts. Our first-graders have put together a special program for their guests to get away and travel the world. It will warm your heart and put a smile on your face. So sit back and enjoy your trip around the world. Let the adventure begin,” Creed said. The students children broke into small groups, class by class, to perform songs with movement, including dancing, hand clapping and skipping. See GRANDPARENTS, Page 11

Wit h a n int roduct ion by Creed of the histor y of the songs which celebrated several places around the globe, the students sang the 19th century sea shanty of the Pacific Ocean, “John Kanaka;” the traditional coastal Irish song, “Rig a Jig Jig”; “Draw a Bucket of Water” from the Georgia Sea Islands and “Circle Round the Zero” from the streets and playgrounds of the inner city. “Thank you for being a wonderful audience and being so supportive of our children. Music is everywhere and movement is an important part of music. Music contributes to the development and growth of the students and they have had a lot of fun learning these songs and we have had a lot of fun working with the students. And as you can tell we have lots of laughs. Thank you also to the first-grade teachers. They have been a big help,” said Scurich. Scurich then invited the audience to participate in the program.

“We would now like to invite you to join us with a little audience participation,” Scurich said, as he asked the grandparents to join the children in a round of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” He gave t he aud ience a chance to warm up before the actual round. The students and audience then sang the round and when it was finished, Scurich and the children applauded the grandparents, and grandparents heartily applauded the students. T he st udent s received a standing ovation from their ver y special audience after concluding the program with “God Bless America.” After the program, the students and their grandparents took turns visiting the art room with art teacher Mrs. Leonard, the gym with physical education teacher Mrs. Magyar and their classroom to visit with their teachers. The students and their grandparents also visited the library with Mrs. Hockensmith to peruse and shop at the school’s annual book fair.

SPORTS Students raise $4,000 for breast cancer awareness Canfield High School seniors and varsity soccer players Heather Haley and Jeff Joseph raised $4700 for breast cancer awareness for their National Honor Society service project during their Pink-Out soccer games. Haley and Joseph solicited sponsors for their long-sleeved team jerseys and sold pink shortsleeved T-shirts during high school lunch periods leading up to the Pink-Outs and at the Canfield Cardinals Varsity football game on Oct. 9. Seven hundred dollars was raised to purchase the Pink-Out team jerseys that the Canfield Soccer Teams wore during the Pink-Out games. They were able to donate a total amount of $4000 to Yellow Brick Place, a cancer wellness center for the tri-county area, and the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center. Yellow Brick Place, founded by President Donna Detwiler and Vice President Anna Aey, provides support to cancer survivors, families and caregivers. The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center delivers accurate prevention, early detection, diagnosis and support services available in an environment of compassionate and coordinated care. Haley and Joseph want to express sincere thanks to all their sponsors and to everyone who donated money or their time, or purchased a T-shirt to support the cause. They noted that this could have never been accomplished without the generous support of everyone involved. Sponsors and donors included Simon Roofing, the Campana family, The Kidney Group, Titan LED, Jeffrey A. Joseph Co., LPA, PNC Bank, J&M Car Wash, Cortland Banks, Farmer’s Trust, Canfield Soccer Boosters, in memory of Tom Davison, DeAngelo Orthodontics, Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, the Accordino family, Danielle Marie Hodge Scholarship, David Bisignani, Huffman Fruit Farm of Salem, Knauf Harvest of Canfield, Panera and Chick-Fil-A.
