Puppet fun at Poland Presbyterian Neighbors serves the towns of Boardman, Austintown, Canfield and Poland and is published every Saturday in The Vindicator. It also is distributed free to nonsubscribers in those towns.

Annette Ahrens from the Poland library visited students at Poland Presbyterian Weekday Preschool and introduced the children to the world of puppets. She showed the students her puppet collection and explained how they work. Following her demonstration, the children each made their own puppet.

The students had the chance to pet a pygmy goat named Cupid who was born two days after Valentine’s Day.

Students get visit from furry friends By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

A couple of barnyard buddies visited Poland North Preschool on March 2. Students in Joy Bucci, Samantha Cox and Terry Wittenauer’s class listened intently to Kim Moff from Mill Creek MetroParks. Moff brought in two furry guests for the students to learn about and interact with. Moff started off the morning by teaching the students about different types of animals that would be found on a farm. Moff talked about ducks, sheep, cats, dogs, rabbits, horses and several others. She had a presentation board that she would Velcro each animal on after she talked about them. When Moff finished teaching the children about the animals, she brought out one of the two she took with her to the school. The first animal was a lionhead rabbit named Snow. Moff took Snow out of her cage and instructed the students as to how they should pet her on her back, not her head. The students lined up and took turns petting Snow.

Students at Poland North preschool took turns petting the Lionhead rabbit that Kim Moff brought in during the Barnyard Buddies day on March 2.

After the students finished petting Snow, Moff brought out a pygmy goat named Cupid. Cupid was born just a few days after Valentine’s Day. The students lined up to pet Cupid and some-

times he would bleat at them. The students were given a hands-on learning opportunity seeing animals that aren’t very common household pets, especially a goat.

Dr. Seuss birthday celebration By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Poland library celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2. Everything at the event was themed and rhymed like a Dr. Seuss book would be. Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, would have turned 112-years-old this year and the Poland library wanted people to join in on a celebration. There were crafts, games, snacks and a chance to get a picture with the Cat in the Hat. Poland librarian Jen Kuzcek worked on organizing the party and setting up several stations for the guests to enjoy. Children could play hopscotch, make a Dr. Seuss hat craft, flip over cards

to match pictures and Dr. Seuss flash cards. Pink lemonade, or a Pink Ink Yink Drink, and rainbow goldfish, playing off “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish,” were available for snacks if the guests got hungry. Kuzcek passed out a pencil and a piece of paper with the different activities on it to everyone. This helped ensure that the children could participate in every activity and check it off when they were done. So many people attended the Dr. Seuss birthday bash that not everyone could fit in one room. Some people worked on their crafts at the outside table while others participated in the activities inside the room.

Little Learners meet new furry friends By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Little Learners Academy Preschool welcomed two barnyard buddies to their school on March 11. Kim Moff from Mill Creek MetroParks brought in a rabbit and a goat to teach the students a few things about barnyard animals. The students were able to go pet the animals after they

learned about different types of animals that could be found on a farm. Moff started off the lesson by reading the book “Sounds of the Farm.” After the book she played a CD with animal noises and had the students guess what animal was making each noise. There was a board that Moff brought in to explain the different kinds of animals on a farm. There were animals that were

considered livestock, poultry, pet and exotic. The students took turns guessing which animals belonged in each section. They also learned the different products that came from each animal. The first animal the children were able to pet was a Lionhead rabbit named Frito. The children formed a line and pet the rabbit one at a time. They got to feel how soft the rabbit was and see

how long its fur is. The other animal that was brought out was a goat named Cupid. Cupid is a young goat that is a mix between a Pygmy and a Nigerian dwarf goat, meaning he will stay small for his whole life and is meant to be a pet. The students all had a fun time learning about different animals and being hands-on with animals that they wouldn’t normally see otherwise.

Poetic details of plants Join Fellows Riverside Gardens for a writing workshop Tuesdays beginning April 12 through May 10 at 6 p.m. Writer Karen Schubert will host this five week workshop incorporating the details of plants into your own writing. Dress for outdoor exploration. Registration has passed.
