Mahoning County 4-H dinner and auction set for April 13 The third annual Mahoning County 4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction will take place on April 13 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. A silent auction will begin at 5 p.m., with dinner starting at 6 p.m., and a live auction to follow with Auctioneer George Roman.

Auction items range from gift baskets to top-quality firearms to 2019 Ohio State University football tickets and so much more. More than 150 items were donated by area businesses, individuals and 4-H clubs. Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Mahoning County 4-H Endowment Fund.

The money is used to send youth to state and national camps, to train volunteers, for educational supplies and to promote 4-H in Mahoning County.

Tickets are $30. To purchase tickets or make a donation, contact the Mahoning County Extension Office at 330-533-5538.

Fitch academic team qualifies for nationals The Austintown Fitch High School Academic Team qualified for the 2019 NAQT High School National Championship Tournament for their performance in the Mahoning County League, where they placed seventh.

Treasures of the Trunk fundraiser to be June 8 The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Poland Seminary High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. There is limit of 100 spaces. Cost per space is $15 until May 30.

St. Christine Scout Troop 22 hosts pancake breakfast St. Christine Scout Troop 22 is hosting a pancake breakfast on April 14 at the St. Christine Parish Center, located at 3165 S. Schenley Ave. in Youngstown, from 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. This pancake breakfast benefits Scout Troop 22 for summer camp/ activities and other year-round program costs. The breakfast includes all-you-can-eat pancakes with a variety of fruit toppings, sausage, scrambled eggs, milk, orange juice and coffee, and costs $7 per person, children 6 and under free. Austintown Schools host spring senior citizens dinner Food, fun and entertainment are in store for Austintown seniors, 65 and older, on April 24 for the Spring Senior Citizens Dinner.

The Michael Kusalaba library hosted a 3Doodler event on April 3.

Community members were able to attend and use the 3D pens, called 3Doodlers, to create works of art.

“It’s just a lot of fun, it’s a cool tool that everyone should have the chance to use,” said librarian Samantha Schneider who organized the event.

The pens were on loan from the Austintown library where they are used regularly in their after school program.

Community members used the pens to free hand projects.

They were also able to use book provided by the library with outlines to create more advanced projects.

“It can be hard or it can be simple,” Schneider said, “It really is a tool anyone can use.”

Vargo said the choice to perform “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr.” was based on the budget, and students who were interested in the performance.

“We look at our talent and what we can afford to do and it was a natural choice,” Vargo said.

Students have been rehearsing for the play since Decem-

ber, moving to weekly after school practices beginning in January.

The program is optional for students, Vargo said, and has a long standing tradition at St. Chrisitine’s.

“We have a long tradition of doing musicals here,” Vargo said. “It went by the wayside for a while, but about 18 years ago it started again and we have been performing a spring musical ever since.”

She explained that a range of

teachers and community members volunteer to assist students in the production, including former JFK teacher Fred Hoover.

“Mr. Hoover is our right hand man,” Philibin said. “He helps us build the sets and always has a smile on his face.”

The students performed the musical four times, from March 13-16.

“The students rise to our expectations,” Vargo said. “They are all very energetic and proud of what they do.”

Library receives grant to support kindergarten readiness T he P ubl ic L ibra r y of Youngstown and Mahoning County received a $16,500 Institute of Museum and Library Services Library Services and Technology Act Literacy Grant by the State Library of Ohio, which supports kindergarten readiness training for librarians and the purchase of Early Learning Backpacks for families to borrow.

Kindergarten readiness training will be led by Saroj Ghoting, an early childhood literacy consultant and national trainer on early literacy. Ghoting has provided training to national organizations such as the Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.

Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County librarians will be trained in all-day workshops in April, May and August. These workshops will establish a foundational knowledge and include hands-on practice and activities on the five domains of early learning, including social and emotional development, approaches toward learning, cognition and general knowledge, language and literacy and physical wellbeing and motor development.

Youth librarians will apply this knowledge to both library programs and our community partnerships. The workshops will also be open to youth librarians across the state.

“I am so pleased that we will be able to share these important concepts not only with our staff, but with library staff from around Ohio, as well. We are grateful to have the support of the State Library and Institute of Museum and Library Services in this endeavor,” said Aimee Fifarek, Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County executive director.

The Librar y Services and Technology Act Literacy Grant also funded the purchase of 62 Early Learning Backpacks.

These backpacks include books, toys and an activity guide. They are aligned with a specific skill from the early learning and development standards and provide parents with activities and tools to develop kindergarten readiness skills at home. These interactive kits are available now at every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County location.

“Research tells us again and again that early learning is a key component in giving children their best start. We are thrilled to help our community through these trainings and Early Learning Backpacks,” said Erin Phemester, Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County programming and youth services director.

“As centers of learning and catalysts of community change, libraries and museums connect people with programs, services, collections, information and new ideas in the arts, sciences and humanities. They serve as vital spaces where people can connect with each other,” said Institute of Museum and Library Services Director Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew. “The Institute of Museum and Library Services is proud to support their work through our grant making as they inform and inspire all in their communities.”

This Library Services and Technology Act Literacy Grant enables the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County to become a more intentional support for families on kindergarten readiness by training librarians in the Early Learning and Development Standards and providing kindergarten readiness tools directly to parents.

Local leaders volunteer with Meals on Wheels

Mea ls on W heels of t he Mahoning County paired up with local leadership to deliver meals to community members on March 11.

According to Meal on Wheels President Kathleen Esseniyi six local leaders volunteered to deliver meals to their community.

Austintown’s Administrator Michael Dockry, Boardman Trustee Tom Costello, Mayor Nick Phillips of Campbell, Mayor Richard Duffett of Canfield, Mayor Tim Sicafuse of Poland, and representing Youngstown Dawn Turanage Director of Youngstown Parks all volunteered to spend a few hours delivering meals.

“To have our local leaders involved promotes awareness of our program and pride in our communities. This in turn promotes more volunteers without which we could not exist,” says Patricia Clinkscales, Office Manager.

Community members were surprised to see local leaders they recognized delivering meals along with their usual Meals on Wheels representatives.

“How cool is it that the people who are getting meals delivered get to see their mayor delivering it to their house,” Esseniyi said.

The event was part of Meals on Wheels annual March for Meals campaign.

Mayors and government representatives volunteered with Meals on Wheels to deliver food to members of their respective communities.

“It is an annual month-long event designed to generate public awareness about senior hunger and isolation and to celebrate the invaluable services provided by Meals on Wheels programs,” Esseniyi said.

She said that the campaign

is intended to showcase the success of the Older Americans Act, and help recruit volunteers from the community.

“The local leaders who participated all commented what a priceless service Meals on Wheels provides for our local senior citizens,” Esseniyi said.

POLICE REPORTS April 1 Overdose: A woman was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after police had answered a call regarding a possible drug overdose in the 4700 block of East Webb Road.

Possible theft: A Social Security card was lost or stolen in the 4600 block of Burkey Road.

Theft: A wallet and cash were missing from a vehicle in the 600 block of North Canfield-Niles Road.

April 2 Breaking and entering: Someone entered a detached garage in the 5100 block of Birchcrest Avenue, then removed two motorcycles.

Possible child abuse: Authorities received information that a 13-monthold toddler on South Navarre Avenue had a burn mark on his chin from a curling iron.

April 3 Counterfeit: A phony $100 bill was recovered at TA Center Youngstown, 5400 Seventy-Six Drive.

Menacing: A Bryant Drive resident reported having gotten threats and numerous unwanted calls.

Theft: Money was stolen from envelopes in an apartment in the 4400 block of Warwick Drive.

Identity theft: A Deeptha-Green Drive resident learned that a credit-card account had been opened without the person’s authorization.

Overdose: A woman and a man were taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after a reported drug overdose in the 200 block of Rosemont Avenue.

April 4 Theft: A credit card was taken from an apartment in the 200 block of Victoria Road.

Theft: Items were stolen from a car in the 1600 block of Laurie Drive.

The Michael Kusalaba library hosted the first Sip and Paint for children on March 12.

After they completed their work, children took their canvases home with them.

“It’s a great way to get kids into art, especially those who already have an interest,” Dale said. “It lets them explore it in a fun way.”

Mill Creek Park hosted the second annual Lunch with a Leprechaun event March 9 at Fellows Riverside Garden.

Jack Kravitz, the owner of Kravitz Garden Café, hosted the event, including a variety of Irish food provided by the café.

“It’s just a fun, relaxed family friendly event,” Kravitz said.

The menu consisted of corned beef, vegetarian cabbage, reu-

bens and Irish brownies and cheesecake for desert.

Kravitz also hosted a variety of entertainment including the magician Seamus O’Foole.

The band County Mayo and the Burke Irish Dancers also per for med for communit y members.

“This kicks off our annual corn beef fest, so its just a great way to get into the spirit,” Kravitz said.

Marci Devellin became the wife of Daniel Candiotti during a wedding ceremony that took place Sept. 8, 2018, at St. James Meeting House in Boardman Park. Officiant at the 1:30 p.m. service was the Rev. Brent Whetstone.

The newlyweds received guests at a reception at Avion on the Water in Canfield.

After a honeymoon to London, Paris and Rome, the couple reside in Boardman.

The bride’s parents are Ron and Patty Devellin of Boardman.

The groom is the son of Kathy Testa of Boardman and Frank and Cindy Candiotti of Sharpsville, Pa. An ivory strapless A-line gown accented with lace and pearl appliques and a beaded satin belt was worn by the bride. Her ensemble was completed with a rhinestone and pearl tiara and shoulder-length veil.

Alyssa Parson was the matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Karen Maleski, cousin of the bride; Amy Nelson, sister of the groom; and Lisa AndrewsBornemisza.

Flower girls were Abigail and Paige Songer, the groom’s cousins.

Attendants wore yellow or black dresses.
