Austintown Food Service Department earns grant The Austintown Food Service Department recently earned a $37,000 Equipment Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The food service department will use those funds to purchase a $32,000 combination oven for Austintown Middle School (AMS) and $5,000 for an upright freezer at the Austintown Early Learning Center (AELC). The USDA set aside $16 million for equipment grants in the year 2017.

The state of Ohio was appropriated over $749,000. Austintown received 5 percent of those funds.

Local shrine club to host dinner event The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on April 29 at the club’s main hall.

Tickets are $10 for adults and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage, as well as dessert. Fitch inducts 2017-2018 NHS members

Dunkin’ Donuts helps feed local families Now through April 30, Dunkin’ Donuts in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be selling icons for a $1 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. With every icon purchased, the customer receives a $1 off coupon for a pound of coffee. For every $1 given, the Food Bank can distribute $11 worth of food to hungry families in our community. Last year, Dunkin’ Donut locations in the Mahoning Valley raised more than $21,000 to feed local families. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised will remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to feed our friends and neighbors.

AGSL hosts Quarter Auction The Austintown Girls Softball League will host a Quarter Auction event on April 21 at St. Anne Ukrainian Byzantine, located at 4310 Kirk Road. The ticket price is $10 and includes one paddle.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the auction begins at 6:30 p.m. The event is for adults only and you may bring your own beverage.

Fitch celebrated the lives of alumni inducted into the National Honor Society 50 years ago during the 2018 induction ceremony.

Austintown Fitch High School inducted 99 new members into their National Honor Society with an assembly on March 23.

The assembly focused on celebrating the accomplishments of the students inside and outside of the classroom and demonstrating the four pillars of the NHS: character, scholarship, leadership and service.

The program featured performances from the school’s concert choir under direction of Bill Klein and the symphonic band under direction of Wesley O’Connor. Guest speaker Jill Martin, social studies teacher at Fitch, spoke about mantras to live by for success and gave an emotional goodbye to her senior students.

Then, they had the procession of new inductees and a candle lighting ceremony. The lighting ceremony included five students lighting candles and speaking about the NHS and the organization’s pillars. They also took time to recognize members celebrating the 50th anniversary of their induction ceremony.

After the induction, Joseph Jadue and Moriah Berni inducted a staff member into the NHS as an honorary member. Berni had the privilege of inducting her father, principal Chris Berni, into the organization.

Berni gave remarks after the induction in which he thanked the students for their service to the community as well as their dedication to their schoolwork.

Heather Carcelli, language arts teacher and director of the school’s NHS program, concluded the assembly, where she said the students are poised to make a change.

Following Carcelli’s concluding statements, the symphonic band played the school alma mater and recessional as the families and NHS members exited the auditorium.

Kiwanis donated to essay winners’ favorite charities Neighbors | Submitted

If you had $50 to give to the local charity of your choice, which one would you choose to donate to and why? Austintown sixth-grade students were asked the same question when they were challenged to prepare an essay about their favorite charity for a contest sponsored by the Austintown Kiwanis Club. The essay contest was also sponsored by the Associated School Employees Credit Union (ASECU). Out of 246 essays, six were selected by the committee, made up of Kiwanis and Fitch Key Club members. On March 20, the Kiwanis Club honored the sixthgrade winners during a special assembly. Winners were presented with a $50 check to donate to their favorite local charity. They had an Easter egg hunt for three different age groups: 3-5, 6-9 and 10 and older. The families brought their own baskets for the hunt. Rather than hiding the eggs, represen-

tatives of First American Loans and Austintown Bounce scattered the eggs in plain sight on the f loor, so children did not try to search in dangerous places for eggs.

The event had more than 4,000 eggs overall. Forty of the eggs had gold tokens inside them, which the children could exchange for a gift basket.

Fifth- and sixth-grade students from Austintown’s intermediate and middle schools filled the Fitch auditorium with vocal melodies at their choir concert on March 13.

Choir teacher Megan Keown directed the bands. She challenged both of the groups with songs performed in English and other languages as well.

Keown said that her students call the concert “the kindness concert.“ The concert was free

to the public, although they had a donation box outside the auditorium. These donations went toward the school’s food pantry to help local families.

Autism Society announces Valley Autism 5K and walk

you to swim?“ They finished their show with “Mama Don’t ‘Low No Banjo.“ The group used some different instrumental accompaniments during their performances. Most songs had a piano with the choir. A student played a drum during the Portuguese and Swahili songs. “How Beautiful is the Rain?“ featured a rainstick to create a rain sound.

Koewn made sure the parents and children met safely in certain parts of the building after the concert. The students began preparing for their next concert, a show with an 80s theme, following their concert.

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley (ASMV) will be hosting the fifth annual Valley Autism 5K and third annual Family Fun Walk on April 28 at Austintown Township Park, located at 600 Kirk Road in Austintown.

Registration, special needs resource fair and children’s entertainment starts at 8 a.m. and the 5K event starts at 9 a.m., followed by a 1 mile walk at 10 a.m.

Experience with microprocessor controllers, analyzers. programmable logic controllers, combustion controllers, inspecting and testing electrical systems including transformers, transfer switches, motors and switchgears and other related equipment is preferred. Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs is beneficial. Computer proficiency is required.
