Band and Orchestra Parents to host fundraising event The Boardman Band and Orchestra Parents will host a Night at the Races on April 14 at St. Luke’s Banquet Hall, located at 5235 South Avenue in Boardman. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The evening will include $2 horse bets, a horse auction, Chinese auction, 50/50 drawing and $2 and $5 sideboards. Tickets are $15 at the door and include admission and food. This event is bring your own beverage (all beverages except water).

Boardman Historical Society hosts local author and historian Local author and historian Tom Welsh will be the guest speaker on April 14 for the Boardman Historical Society at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. Welsh will present a program based upon his book title “Strouss’: Youngstown’s Dependable Department Store,” which he coauthored with Michael Geltz.

The program is part of a new series of BHS public offerings. The presentation is open to the public. A question and answer period will be available after the 45 minute pro-

gram. Admission is free and reservations are suggested. Walk-ins are welcomed and admitted based upon seating availability. Pruning clinic offered at the Boardman Park There will be a hands-on pruning clinic at the historic Smith Family Homestead, located at 8270 Raupp Ave. in Boardman, which is off of Washington Boulevard, on April 25 from 1-3 p.m. The clinic is sponsored by the Ohio State Extension Service, Boardman Park and the Mahoning Valley Landscape and Nursery Association. Participants will learn to prune for maximum flower potential, disease reduction, regeneration and shape. Additionally, proper pruning techniques and tools will be discussed. There will be hands-on training and participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring a lawn chair if needed. Pre-registration is required. The fee is $20 per person, which includes a set of hand pruners and a set of handouts.

Dunkin’ Donuts helps feed local families Now through April 30, Dunkin’ Donuts in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be selling icons for a $1 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. With every icon purchased, the customer receives a $1 off coupon for a pound of coffee. For every $1 given, the Food Bank can distribute $11 worth of food to hungry families in our community. Last year, Dunkin’ Donut locations in the Mahoning Valley raised more than $21,000 to feed local families. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised will remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to feed our friends and neighbors. Ukulele group to meet There will be another Steel Valley Ukers meeting at the Austintown library on April 21 from 3-5 p.m. The group is a non-profit, and there is no fee to attend any of their meetings.

The group plays ukuleles and is open to people of all ages and skill levels.

Park celebrates annual Maple Syrup Festival

Boardman Park had their annual Maple Syrup Festival with multiple events throughout the park on March 17, 18, 24 and 25.

The park has had the festival for more than 35 years. They partner with local organizations to provide more activities than just the park’s programming.

They collaborated with the Boardman Rotary for the rotary’s pancake breakfast. They had their breakfast each of the four days at the Lariccia Family Community Center. Jill Cox and Jennifer Roberts cochaired the

event.

The proceeds from the breakfast went toward local organizations, such as the Boardman library and school district, and to Rotary International projects, like their campaign to end polio in all countries. The breakfast and their Oktoberfest are their two large fundraisers.

The rotary had a 5k and a mile race on March 24 at the park.

Forty runners participated in the event and all had their breakfast at the park. John Brkic chaired the races.

The organization received donations from their sponsors, such as Window World, Valley

Industrial Trucks and Home Savings, to have the supplies needed for the breakfast.

The park set up a number of other groups in the Lariccia Family Community Center. The Boardman schools’ arts program displayed students’ artwork in the building for the second year in a row. They invited a group of woodcarvers to show attendees how to make wooden art.

Boy Scout Troop 60 also had a basket raffle inside the community center. The group had a camping demonstration outside as well.

The park had wagon rides and a maple syrup presentation from

the park’s sugar shack, where they make maple syrup. The volunteers at the sugar shack collect maple sap in bags and then use their evaporator to make maple syrup.

The final day of the Maple Syrup Festival included the opening of the disc golf season at the park. Justin Edwards, of the Mahoning Valley Disc Golf Association, designed the course. He recently expanded the course from nine holes to 18. The course now goes from the front of the park and into the woods. These new holes require the players to throw around trees and over the creek.

Local shrine club to host dinner event The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on April 29 at the club’s main hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage, as well as dessert.

This is a community event and the public is invited to attend.

Tickets can be purchased in advance from any club officer or on the day of the event; carry-outs are also available. For additional information, contact the club at 330-549-3857, ext. 0.

On March 2 and 3, the Ohio Speech and Debate Association had its state finals in Sylvania, Ohio. Twenty members of the Cardinal Mooney speech and debate team under Coach Tina Furano competed and the following students earned special honors in their categories at finals: Shannon Reardon was State Runner Up and National Tournament Qualifier in International Extemporaneous Speaking; Claire Driscoll and D’Ella Heschmeyer were semi-finalists and National Tournament Qualifiers in Duo Interpretation; Adriana Vennetti was Quarter Finalist in Dramatic Interpretation; Elizabeth Vennetti was a Quarter Finalist in Dramatic Interpretation; Jolene Bassil was a Quarter Finalist in Informative Speaking and Andrew Neider and George Sdgreas were Octofinalists in Public Forum Debate. Boardman Park’s community garden to start planting While it may still be too early for digging and planting it’s not too early to join the community garden and start planning what fresh vegetables will be on your dinner table this summer. Whether you have a green thumb and are an experienced gardener or whether you are a beginner, community gardens allow you to experience the joys of gardening, promote healthy eating habits and build new relationships with others in the community. The garden is located at the Historic Southern Stables on Washington Boulevard. Registration for the 10 feet by 20 feet garden plots begins on April 2 at the Boardman Park Office, located at 375 Boardman-Poland Road, and are available for a fee of $25. Your fee includes the garden plot, water and periodic classes/ instructions on gardening. Due to the limited number of plots available, registration is limited to Boardman residents only. Local MSVC chapter hosts convention The Mahoning and Shenango Valleys Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MSVC-MOAA) recently hosted, for the first time ever in the Mahoning Valley, the Ohio Council of Chapters Biennial Convention at the Consolidated Activities Center of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station (YARS) in Vienna. Approximately 120 attendees representing seven chapters from all over the state of Ohio met for two days to hear presentations from a number of

guest speakers. These included Capt. Nicholas Bartolotta of the 9th U.S. Coast Guard, RADM Margaret Kitt, Assistant General Surgeon representing the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Col. William Meade, Commander of Camp Ravenna, Ohio National Guard, Robert Edwards, director of Defense Finance and Accounting Center in Cleveland, Col. Terry Coles, MOAA Senior Director of Chapter Affairs, and Lt. Col. John Boccieri, represent-

ing the 910th Air Lift Wing at the YARS. Main speaker at the banquet was Lt. Gen. Dana Atkins, President and CEO of MOAA, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia and former Air Force Thunderbirds pilot. Jones hosts bake sale fundraiser Brynna Jones, a first-grade student at West Boulevard Elementary School, is hosting a bake sale on April 20 from 5:30 – 9 p.m. at Fred Astaire Dance Studio, located at 5090 Market Street in Boardman, to raise funds for Angels for Animals’ new Angel Wing. Last year,

The Carnegie Science Center visited West Boulevard Elementary on Feb. 27 to teach the students about biomimetics.

The school’s PTA invited Beth Colbert from the Science Center to give a “Science on the Road“ presentation to the students in the gymnasium twice during the day. Along with the presentation, the PTA ran “adventure work stations” in the auditorium that gave students a more hands-on experience. These stations were also a part of Carnegie Science’s set up.

Design,” demonstrated the different forms of technology that have been invented by looking at nature and wildlife as inspiration.

She began her presentation with a history of the Wright brothers. The two brothers looked to birds when creating their planes, unlike their contemporaries.

They had their success because they used nature as a reference point.

Colbert had a number of demonstrations to exhibit some science concepts. She had two volunteers hold a roll of toilet paper while she used a leaf blower to push the paper in the air and off the roll. This demonstration taught the students about lift.

Lynda Beichner, the president of the school’s PTA, said she believed that the event served as a good STEM lesson for the children. She explained that the school has had a history of inviting the center’s program to the school.

The adventure stations derived from the presentation. They had several stations that reinforced what the students learned. One of the stations demonstrated how a turtle and submarine choose to submerge and float. They also had some of the animals from the presentation, such as beetles, at the stations.

Along with the “Wild By Design” presentation, the Carnegie Science Center brought several activity stations for the students to have a hands-on experience with the concepts taught during the presentation. Pictured, one of the stations had a beetle, which had been talked about during the assembly.

Carnegie Science Center’s program does several different shows each year. Most of their presentations are for students from kindergarten to sixth grade.

Along with the assembly presentations, the center has a mobile planetarium that it brings to

events.

Colbert began working with the science center in 2006. She had always had an interest in science and studied archeology.

She eventually applied to the program and has worked for the center since.

Park to host day camp during summer Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp will soon begin. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imaginations, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. West Boulevard Elementary School invited students’ family members to the school throughout the month of March for their “Special Person Lunch.”

Each grade level got to have a special lunch each Thursday of the week. The kindergarten had their lunch on March 1, the first grade had their lunch on March 8, and so on. Students invited their parents, grandparents or another special person in their

life.

The guests all met in the auditorium, which gave them time to socialize and get to know each other. Cervello walked in and had the guests meet with the students by classroom when it was time for their lunch.

Jackie Johnson, the grandmother of kindergarten student Zackery Johnson, said she en-

joyed getting to see what the school is like and meeting with other families. This year was her third year as a special guest.

Both of the Johnsons enjoyed getting to have lunch with each other.

The school set up a slideshow in the auditorium and cafeteria.

The presentation showed different pictures of some of the students in class and at events in the school.

Each of the four Boardman elementar y schools have a special lunch event during the year. West Boulevard Elementary has approximately 100 students per grade level and each of the students brought their own guests.

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley (ASMV) will be hosting the fifth annual Valley Autism 5K and third annual Family Fun Walk on April 28 at Austintown Township Park, located at 600 Kirk Road in Austintown.

Registration, special needs resource fair and children’s entertainment starts at 8 a.m. and the 5K event starts at 9 a.m., followed by a 1 mile walk at 10 a.m.

Instrument/Electrical Trainee

Candidates should have a minimum of 1 year experience with electrical installation, maintenance and repair of single and phase 3 electrical systems and equipment. Candidates should also have experience with installing, maintaining, modifying troubleshooting and repairing all types of electrical distribution systems and associated electrical equipment in compliance with current National Electrical Code and with utilizing drawings, wiring diagrams and manufacturer’s installation manuals to complete assigned projects. Experience with microprocessor controllers, analyzers. programmable logic controllers, combustion controllers, inspecting and testing electrical systems including transformers, transfer switches, motors and switchgears and other related equipment is preferred. Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs is beneficial. Computer proficiency is required.

The ceremony was solemnized by the Rev. John Keehner. A reception followed at The Lake Club in Poland.

The parents of the bride are Thomas and Cheryl Strauss of Youngstown. The groom is a son of Mark and Beth Hoersten of Chagrin Falls.

The couple honeymooned in Italy and reside in Chicago.

The bride wore a strapless, mermaidstyle gown covered in lace with layers of ivory and white tulle.
