Books, Bags and Bling sale to be April 21 Poland United Methodist Church will host the annual Books, Bags and Bling sale on April 21 from 9 a.m. until noon. The church is located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road in Poland.

Holy Family Seniors Group to have April 16 meeting The Holy Family Seniors Group will meet on April 16 at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Family Parish Hall. Lunch will be served at noon, followed by Bingo and card games. Hostesses for this month are Jani Stamp, Gert Baldwin and Pat Kasaris. The cost of lunch each month is $4. Any member who did not pay their dues in March are asked to pay at the April meeting. The cost of the annual membership is $10. New members are also invited to join at this time.

Local historical society to meet The Poland Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. on April 17 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (State Route 224) in Poland. Following the business meeting, a program about the Ohio Indian Mounds will be presented by Ted Heineman at 7:30 p.m.

Ukulele group to meet There will be another Steel Valley Ukers meeting at the Austintown library on April 21 from 3-5 p.m. The group is a non-profit, and there is no fee to attend any of their meetings.

The group plays ukuleles and is open to people of all ages and skill levels.

Local shrine club to host dinner event The Youngstown Shrine Club will be hosting a spaghetti dinner on April 29 at the club’s main hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and dinner will be served from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. The meal includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread and a beverage, as well as dessert. This is a community event and the public is invited to attend.

Program a robot Find out how to program Lego Mindstorms Robots at the Poland library on April 28 at 3 p.m. Learn about the Lego Mindstorms software and use it to program robots to get through challenges. Dunkin’ Donuts helps feed local families Now through April 30, Dunkin’ Donuts in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be selling icons for a $1 donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. With every icon purchased, the customer receives a $1 off coupon for a pound of coffee. For every $1 given, the Food Bank can distribute $11 worth of food to hungry families in our community. Last year, Dunkin’ Donut locations in the Mahoning Valley raised more than $21,000 to feed local families. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised will remain in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties to feed our friends and neighbors. Children spring with joy at library program

The Poland librar y had a springtime celebration called “Spring Things” on March 24 in their meeting room.

The children’s program featured a story time and craft activity. Poland librarian Amanda Koller organized the event to occur following the Easter egg hunt at town hall across the street.

Koller read two stories to the children, “Hurray for Spring” by Patricia Hubbell and “Charlie Chick” by Nick Denchfield and Ant Parker. Following the stories, Koller led the children to a fun dance.

Then, the children did their craft. Koller based the craft on Denchfield and Parker’s story.

They made their own “Charlie Chick” using paper plates, construction paper and glue. The children could also fill out Easter-related coloring sheets that the library provided for them.

The library’s children’s programs often includes a literacy element and hands-on instructions. Aebischer’s Jewelry celebrates 90 years A local family-owned jeweler is celebrating 90 years of helping the community shine.

Aebischer’s Jewelry, located at 68 South Main Street in Poland, will commemorate its 90th anniversary with an in-store event on April 27 and 28.

“This business has meant the world to me,” said Harold Aebischer, whose parents were the store’s original owners. “Seeing our jewelry get passed down through generations, and helping people celebrate the biggest moments in their lives, is an incredible experience.”

The business was founded by Swiss immigrants John and Johanna Aebischer in April 1928. As a skilled watchmaker, John Aebischer rented a small business space in Struthers and sat in the window taking his own watch apart and reassembling it until he got his first customer.

Harold Aebischer took over the business in 1967 and moved the shop to Poland Village during his time as owner. His son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Karen Aebischer, represent the third generation to own the store.

Their sons, Adam and Alex Aebischer, are also involved in the business. Throughout the years, Aebischer’s Jewelry has evolved into a full-service shop offering watch and jewelry repair, a bridal department, fashion jewelry, custom design, remounts and several watch lines.

“The entire Aebischer family

is grateful for the blessings that have allowed us to remain successful over the past 90 years,” Doug Aebischer said. “We look forward to many more years of helping others commemorate the special people and moments in their lives.”

The anniversary celebration will feature giveaways that include a 0.90 carat round diamond valued at $6,336; a diamond fashion necklace valued at $1,200; a Mariana necklace valued at more than $242; and a

men’s watch valued at $450. Visitors must enter each contest in person during the anniversary weekend.

“We wanted to find a way to thank the community for all of its support over the past 90 years,” Doug Aebischer said.

“We are also offering our customers 25 percent off their entire purchase up to $2,500 that weekend.”

Representatives from the four Poland schools and the Poland Schools Foundation met at Dobbins Elementary School on March 5 for two check presentations.

The foundation and the schools celebrated successful funding of multiple projects.

The organization gave money toward technology groups in the schools and multiple teacher mini-grants.

“The funds allow teachers to go above and beyond,” said Luke Politsky, President of the Poland Schools Foundation. He said the grants addressed needs for particular programs.

Michael Daley, principal of Dobbins Elementary, heads the mini-grant program. The foundation gave the schools $5207.39 for their grants.

The kindergarten and firstgrade received funding for their Bridges math program at Union Elementary School. The kindergarten’s money went toward manipulative materials, a central resource in the math instruction. The first grade got new books that connect literacy and math instruction.

The middle school and high school special education departments successfully funded their projects. The middle school received a number of math resources to meet the needs of students with mild, moderate

and severe disabilities. The high school’s mini-grant went toward meeting the sensory needs of students to manage stress and anxiety.

The tenth-grade history classes have funding for their American Legacy Booklets, which include many of the founding documents of the United States.

They plan to use the booklets to connect the English and history curriculum.

They also presented a check to the technology grants. The funding for these grants came

from a “tickets for technology” car raffle. Local car dealerships donated vehicles for the raffle.

The seventh- and eighth-grade STEM instruction completed their Lego Mindstorm Robotics sets with the funding. The robotics club received funding for competition equipment.

The Poland Schools Foundation looks for different ways to help the schools and meet teacher needs. They also fund a scholarship that has taken some of the financial pressure from PSHS seniors heading to college.

History presentation on Holocaust at library

The Poland library welcomed a Holocaust Educational Specialist to their library for a presentation on March 7.

Jesse McC la i n of t he Youngstown Area Jewish Federation spoke about his extensive knowledge of the Holocaust. In addition to speaking, he brought an exhibit detailing the experiences of Holocaust survivors Henry Kinast and Bill Vegh.

“To me, it’s not a Jewish issue, it’s a human issue,” McClain said during his presentation.

He explained that there are still genocides and holocausts happening in parts of the world today.

His presentation went over some of the untrue beliefs around the Holocaust, such as Hitler being born Jewish, and brought up other facts, like how the genocide of the Romani people killed nearly half of their population in Europe.

He explained that those involved in the Holocaust had four different roles. Those that followed the Axis Powers or helped the Axis were perpetrators, many types of people were the victims, the Allies were the rescuers and then countries were bystanders, including the United States for many years.

He explained that the bystanders played a role in helping the Axis by standing with the victims.

He then showed a short film, “Pigeon,” that explored the four roles people play in a small setting. The story, based on true events, followed a Jewish man, the victim, whose fake identification papers had been stolen from him. He got on a train and Nazi soldiers, the perpetrators, stopped the train and asked for identification papers.

A woman, realizing the man’s problem, stands up and acts as a rescuer by claiming to be his wife. Those on the train that did nothing to help the man were bystanders.

He also spoke briefly about the lives of survivors Vegh and Kinast during his talk. He described his trips to Israel and Poland and the environment for Jewish people in both places.

He talked about different myths and facts about the historic event.

Holocaust has led to a life-time study of the history, politics and stories surrounding the Holocaust that has lasted for over

30 years. He explained that the historical event is relevant now, with genocides in places like Darfur.

Music teacher Dana Emery directed the students for the concert. All the songs went together as a cohesive story revolving around different hats.

Emer y said she aimed to teach the students about how

to put on a production, use proper singing techniques and getting their singing voice in their head. She also wanted to get the students singing well.

The show featured several songs with small sketches in between the songs to further the story of the show.

Autism Society announces Valley Autism 5K and walk

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley (ASMV) will be hosting the fifth annual Valley Autism 5K and third annual Family Fun Walk on April 28 at Austintown Township Park, located at 600 Kirk Road in Austintown.

Registration, special needs resource fair and children’s entertainment starts at 8 a.m. and the 5K event starts at 9 a.m., followed by a 1 mile walk at 10 a.m.

Race registrations and additional event information are available at ValleyAutism5K.org or by calling 330-333-9609.

“We have dedicated ourselves to growing this already successful run into an event with broad appeal to help raise the funds needed to support families affected by autism in the region,” said Aundréa Heschmeyer, ASMV Board Vice-President.

Heschmeyer explained the autism societies role in the community is to improve the quality of life for families with broad support, activities, information and referral. Its secondary roles are to act as an advocate on their behalf by raising awareness, bringing about community change and creating opportunities for individuals working through life with this disability.

“We need the help of everyone in the Valley that can to register to run, walk or can help spread the word about our event to their friends and family in order to make this event a success,” she said.

The event will include a 5K run, 5K timed walk, 1 mile family fun walk, special needs resource fair and family entertainment.

The 5K event is a combination of trails and roads to create a unique running experience.

Participants can register for the events at ValleyAutism5K.org.

Medals will be awarded to the top runners in each age category, top overall male and female in 5K walk category, as well as prizes for top fundraising teams.

“We are excited to not only provide a great 5K run and walk experience, but also a great community event for our families affected by autism. There will be a DJ, bounce house, petting zoo, pony rides, Gymsters mini obstacle course, balloon artist and photo booth,” said Robin Suzelis, Board President of Autism Society of Mahoning Valley.

Experience with microprocessor controllers, analyzers. programmable logic controllers, combustion controllers, inspecting and testing electrical systems including transformers, transfer switches, motors and switchgears and other related equipment is preferred. Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs is beneficial. Computer proficiency is required.
